If I understand what you mean.
I think it depends on what can be pointed towards Christ. There isn’t much religiously pointeable to Christ when it outwardly imitates but inwardly opposes. Contrasted with religion that is not imitating but conceiving. All identities are not equal I think.

That is at least some help - thanks 🙂

And yet a catholic priest who happens to be Jewish can go to Temple and worship with the Jews who don’t believe that Christ is the messiah. But a catholic who is baptised LDS and then returns to mass cannot be both mormon and catholc. That doesn’t make sense.

That is one the points I’m making: the news about the priest is a contradiction of the Church’s doctrine; it makes a nonsense of it. Hence my question about former Protestants not - it seems - being allowed the same liberty

Also, while we’re on the subject, there is another difference between a Catholic mass and an LDS sacrament meeting:

At a Catholic mass, the congregants are reverent (even the small children are remarkably reverent). Whereas at an LDS meeting the lack of reverence is deplorable. Any former Mormon can attest to this.

At the typical LDS ward on Sunday, during the sacrament meeting you will see:

the girls doing each others hair
kids eating cheerios and playing with toys and “busy books”
teenage girls and boys hanging all over each other in the pews, right in front of their parents, who don’t seem to mind.
people sleeping
people talking (loudly) throughout the meeting, ignoring the speakers
people chewing gum
etc…

The old joke goes “I was at the hockey game last night, when suddenly a Mormon sacrament meeting broke out!”
Not quite. I think that you are off the mark here. During sacrament, girls are not doing each other’s hair and teenage boys and girls are usually not hanging on eachother in the seats. But yes, some people can be catnapping, especially if it is hot inside. But people are not talking loudly throughtout the meeting. And people are not chewing gum during the passing of the sacrament. But nice try…

Now of course, if I were an anticatholic I may something like this: in catholic mass since people are sitting, standing and kneeling throughout the mass, it is quite impossible to sleep. And a catholic mass is 40 minutes whereas the lds go for a three hour block. Quite a difference.

However in a penecostal church it is quite okay for a boy to wear a hat inside their church. In this great huge world of ours, I say each his or her own.

Oh and what about this old joke: anticatholc: Yesterday at a catholic mass I was standing, kneeling, and sitting so much, I needed to go to the drugstore for some ben gay.

Not funny, right? :o

I know and there is still silence in the court, judging by the responses so far.

Obviously you have never been to a Catholic mass. At mass this past Sunday, besides the priest and the deacon celebrating the mass, there were:

2 lectors
1 cantor
15 choir members (not counting the pianist and the violininst)
6 altar servers
9 eucharistic ministers
4 ushers and
3 hospitality ministers

all contributing happily and enthusiastically to the beauty and holiness of the mass. That is far more people than participate in a LDS sacrament meeting.

Even those who are just attending don’t just “sit there and watch the show”. They are verbally responding to the priest, the lectors and the cantor, singing with the choir, standing kneeling and sitting, praying, reciting the creed and so much more.

Learn something about the RCC before you criticize it.
That is all true. But in the lds church almost everyone has a calling or a job to do who are young adult age. See the difference? Most people attending the catholic mass have nothing to do but attend Mass on Sunday or Saturday. Not to mention the fact that many callings in the lds church require weekly meetings during the week and weekly preparation.

-LDS believe that God the Father has a body of flesh and bones, and that He has a spouse, the Heavenly Mother.
-Catholics cannot believe the above.

-Catholics believe that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are consubstantial.
-LDS do not believe the above.

-LDS believe that only the LDS Church has priesthood authority.
-Catholics do not believe the above.

-Catholics believe that only the Catholic Church has the fullness of Truth.
-LDS do not believe that.

-etc. etc.

No, I don’t see that being Mormon and Catholic is like dual citizenship, for the simple fact that we believe in theologies of God that are very different. Scientologists say you can be a Scientologist and whatever religion you are. Sure, until you start hearing about the past lives.
That is because you are very much into dogma. I don’t think that god cares too much about dogma. What is the dogma of the new testament? To love one another as god loves us and that includes loving your enemies. But where is the dogma in the new testament that you have defined or other catholics have defined throughout the mormon threads? Even the ten commandments are in the old testament. Perhaps the beatitudes are the dogma of the new testament. Do you follow them?

Setting
When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying…

Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Light of the world
You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

The early christians did the last sentence very well and the pagans were very impressed and began to join the christians.

Just to clarify for everyone: The Mass of Paul VI (the “novus ordo”, the ordinary form, the Mass most in the USA are familiar with) usually lasts about 50-60 mins on Sundays. The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, found in the Eastern Catholic churches, usually lasts about 1hr and 20-30 mins or so. The Tridentine Mass (missa cantata) lasts a similar amount of time.

The LDS sacrament meeting does not last for three hours. The Sacrament Meeting, the service equivalent to the Mass/Divine Liturgy, lasts about an hour. After this, there is Sunday School, where people can go to Gospel Doctrine, Gospel Principles, Primary, etc. This lasts for about 40-50 minutes. After this, there are Priesthood meetings for men and boys (divided into high priests, elders, teachers, deacons, priests), Relief Society for women, and Young Women for girls. Note that you don’t necessarily have to go to the last two parts. You can go to Sacrament Meeting then go home. However many that go to Sacrament Meeting stay for the rest.

So to clarify, LDS do not go for a three hour block of sitting in the sacrament meeting.

The actual difference is that people in the Catholic parish volunteer to do all the things to keep the parish working. In the LDS ward, callings are assigned by the bishop.

In all of the things listed, if a person wants to participate they can. They are volunteers they ask to participate. Callings, talks, home teaching, visiting teaching are all assigned by the bishop. Can YOU see the difference?

How do you define dogma?

Are you asking where is Catholic dogma in the New Testament? I hope you aren’t actually asking that, as a Catholic…

If God doesn’t care about dogma, then why did He found His Church, whether LDS or Catholic, which define dogma?

If you believe you have “nothing to do”, you need to learn your Catholic faith.

Ya sure you go to Mass.

It is good that you are studying. Yet, you should remember that Catholics are not sola scriptura.

The lds are there for about 3 hours doing various functions. And mass can last only 40 minutes depending on the homily and especially during the week. Did you see my post above in blue lettering?

Neither are the beatutudes sola scriptura since letting our light shine entails good works. But some of the catholics here are too much into dogma and are perhaps forgetting the big picture.

Mormons don’t go to sacrament meeting during the week. 😛

CAN ONLY LAST FOR 40 MINUTES??? I don’t think you go, you can protest all you want but you don’t go to Sunday Mass.

Go to the 7:30 in the morning mass during the week and you are out in 40 minutes. But now that I am thinking about it…if the mass starts at 10:45, the people are usually out in 45 to 50 minutes so the priest can get ready for the next mass that starts at 12.

Catholics here are adhering to Catholic teaching, in its entirety, which includes the Bible, and has the importance of orthodoxy or “right belief” behind it. Dogmatic, is something you seem to view as an insult. Guess what? Catholics have beliefs in, and adhere to, DOGMAS. You may as well replace the word “dogmatic” with “Catholic”, because that is what we are.
