She is living in a fantasy world where she has no obligations and no consequences for her actions. I think she knows she is using him and feels some guilt, but not enough to stop the affair.
At this point pushing for the divorce and primary custody seems to be the only reasonable action. He needs to find out from a lawyer what his chances are for getting custody. Given that he both works and takes care of the kids while she steps out at night, I would think his chances at custody are pretty good.
She has a great gig right now; all the fun and none of the responsibility. I don’t see her giving that up without having somewhere else to go; so I don’t think there is an imminent danger of her taking the kids away from him. I would bet anything that she is in discussions with her affair partner on how they are going to manage in a post-marriage environment (i.e. why she is asking for time). If he waits too long though, he could come home from work to a Dear John note and an empty home.
He needs to put together a plan to get custody of those kids and execute it immediately. The longer he waits and gives his wife and affair partner time to plan, the worse off everyone is going to be.
edit: OP also needs some local support system. I understand being embarrassed, but this is all too much for any one person to handle on his own. I hope OP finds someone he trusts to confide in all of this. A counselor may be a good start, but he’ll need friends too.
