Will Automation be good or bad for jobs and society?

I’m not liking the characterisation of people in low paid work as scum who deserve all they get. These are necessary jobs.

And if a job isn’t worth a living wage why blame anyone for not wanting to do it?
I listed a number of reasons earlier.

I am curious how sustainable an economy that makes every job provide a living wage can be.

Seems to me it would drive up prices as well as drive many small businesses out.

Maybe the employers need to be asking themselves why they can’t fill vacancies

I am sure that they are asking themselves that. And some are putting signs on their buildings, running ads on the radio, touting the reasons to work at their joint.

Youre the one using the word scum. I just think if you were upfront about your situation. This socialistic belief that having job means you deserve a living wage isnt according to god will.

ConfusedLucy is making valid points!~
It’s not the living wage that will close small businesses (btw, a living wage is a Catholic declaration of social justice, no matter who likes that phrase)…It’s large businesses that will pay a better wage that will close down the small business.
We as a people have passed by the mom and pop stores to save a buck shopping at the big chains, and did we really get all we bargained for, barring Chinese junk?..I would suggest we got what was coming, the closing of small businesses due to the patronage of the “hot and now” mentality. A few extra dollars was thrown at the worker (Walmart currently pays above minimum wage) and due to their monopoly on everything from the butcher, the baker and candle stick maker they employ more.
So please. Don’t blame the need for a living wage (which is a moral issue) on a worker when these types of jobs are readily available, Blame it on the inability of the small business to compete. That’s your free market at work!~In the game of monopoly, there is only one winner…and he takes all.

A living wage is not a socialist idea. True socialism is the means of production being government owned and operated, and that is not the case in this country. A living wage is called for from biblical times as being moral and just.

If the state enforces a higher minimum wage, it is the state that bears the blame for the effects of such a wage.

I still am curious how sustainable the economy where such a living wage is enforced.

No one has attempted to answer.

At one point the vast majority, upwards of 90% of people, worked in agriculture. Today, less than 10% of the population is, yet we produce more, better, cheaper food than ever before, have a larger population than ever before, and have more economic activity than ever before.

Automation is nothing to fear.

There is no “blame” for instituting what is right and just when a business will not…The law also calls for confinement of a law breaker, do you also have issue with the state when they enforce the law too?
We are not Vietnam or China, we don’t pay dimes/hour…on the other hand we have utilized their LABOR and returned the goods to sell for well above what it took to make. It is well known we’ve purchased child labor when we buy from some of the big chain stores but do it anyway. We’ve by passed our own mom and pop livelihood stores…they could not compete.
Pay a man a fair and just wage for a day so he can handle his fundamental needs, we’re not Vietnam.

Collosians 4:1Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair , because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.

Jeremiah 22:13 13"Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper rooms by injustice, making his own people work for nothing, not paying them for their labor.

Romans 4:4 4Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation.

Luke 10:7 7Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages . Do not move around from house to house.

Low paid jobs are a product of supply and demand. The lower the pay the more people that can do the job. I bet there are thousands and thousands of people that can do your job. That doesnt mean there are thousands and thousands willing to do your job. My wife make 100,000+ a year and there are only about 1000 people in the usa that can do her job and of those 1000 she is in the top 20 of those people. If there were only 1000 people that could do your jobs and you were one of them you would be paid more.

And what exactly is a just wage?
My wife pays her employees, but it is not enough to support a household.
The business simply does not support a payroll that high.

Perhaps she should shut her doors and close up.
Sure no one will have a job, but perhaps our conscience will be clear.

When my mom was young (20), she and her younger sister moved up North from the Southern cotton fields so that they could get a good job and try to climb out of extreme poverty.

They did get factory jobs during a time when factories were up and running 24/7 (3 shifts). The jobs paid better than cotton-picking, but not enough so that the sisters could live in a house or even an apartment.

So they moved into what was called a “girls’ residence.” Only women were allowed, and there were rules about men visiting.

The sisters shared a room, but there were common gathering areas. There were many other young women living in the residence hall, too. Everyone took turns cooking and sharing the expenses and work of food prep, and they often planned socials (very cheap socials!).

My mother told me stories about how much fun it was, and how the young men (including my dad!) would come to the residence hall to pick up their dates–roller skating was a favorite activity, as was going to the pictures (movies).

Why am I telling this story? Because I often wonder why women who are struggling to make ends meet don’t join forces with other women in the same boat, share a residence (house, apartment), and combine incomes to buy food and other necessities, and look out for each other.

I realize that some people really dislike living with others. But a lot of people really dislike not having enough money to buy food or make their car payments or pay for heating in the winter!

I also realize that some people are afraid they’ll end up with the Roommate from Hades. But that’s the beauty of my mother’s “residence hall”–there were rules, and there was a house mother who ENFORCED those rules, and the penalty for transgressing was to be booted out of the house.

It seems that nowadays, people prefer to move back in with their parents rather than find a group of like-minded roommates and strike out on their own.

I think living with others sounds like a good solution for people who have a low-income job. Such an arrangement would make it possible for women in low-income jobs to get some schooling (so much is offered online nowadays)–do you all realize that the difference between a minimum-wage job with no/low benefits, and a decent-wage job with full benefits is often only 2-3 years of schooling beyond college?! And if you work in health care as a minimum wage PCT (some places call them CNAs) or some other low-income position, you must know that there are shortages of the more skilled professionals (lab, respiratory, medical imaging, physical therapy assistants, etc., and of course, nurses), and often, a hospital will reimburse tuition for those who complete the degree needed and commit to working in that hospital for a certain number of years.

Even if women are single mothers with children, it still seems to me that combining resources with one or two other moms with children would be beneficial for all

I attended a presentation on artificial intelligence today and learned that AI can be applied to much more than manual labor jobs.

Someone has an AI computer program that is used to analyze tumors to determine if they are malignant. There are plans to have AI analyze a person’s health conditions and health history to determine the best approach to medical treatment.

AI programs are being used in municipal and state government as chatbots to interact with citizens who request information about any number of programs or services.

AI will one day be used to manage traffic flow in cities once all vehicles are driverless. AI will begin to replace technical jobs.

I read an article about a proposal to have AI robots care for the elderly in lieu of human carers.
