With Trump Behind, Things Will Get Nasty

I see totalitarianism from the left. I agree that it would be good if it did not increase.

ETA: this is actually a response to @FrankFletcher.

So all civility is suspect… 🤔
Mitt Romney and John McCain are not favorites of the far-right or even the mainstream right nowadays. They appreciate the behavior of Trump. What his opponents criticize are the very traits they adore.

It becomes hard to not entertain the term deplorables.

The problem that I see now is that there is such a divide between visions for our nation.

I do not see anyone advocating for a ridiculous amount of rugged individualism these days, but I do see people advocating for Marxist principles, which they very carefully equivocate and disguise.

And then you have all the people in between. The problem is not civility or lack thereof; it is not that which divides us. It is the actual difference in vision.

One group wants equality of opportunity, the other equality of outcome. One group wants to build on what we have, one to tear down what we have.

Do I think Trump goes too far? Yes. But then, maybe not really.

And yet I feel that many politicians do bully, say, those in fly-over country. Outside the Beltway. They do it through outsourcing and insourcing. They do it through words and attitudes.

Being “nationalist” is thoroughly condemned, but being Communist is practically praised! We have limits on conservatives by our rejection of certain old ideas such as racism, but we have no equal limits on the ideas of the left, even though some of their ideas are old and rejected.
They appreciate the behavior of Trump.
It is not the incivility per se that they appreciate but the clarity. They appreciate that someone is standing up for them against and calling out those who insult them and their lives and their sacrifices and take away their livelihoods.

Those who hurt average Americans do so with extraordinary civility, I guess in your book that makes it all right.

There’s quite a difference there. And then calling Harris “nasty”? That’s disgusting
She sure was nasty when she attacked Kavanaugh and that other judge for being in the K of C. So she was “smooth” about it and didn’t scream. Just as nasty as if she had.
You seem completely unaware of the divisions in our nation which existed long before Trump was elected.
The left treated George W. Bush horribly. It just wasn’t all day every day like is is for Trump. The liberal media actually let a day or two go by without accusing Bush of something terrible.

It’s mainly about abortion, in reality. And that is intractable.

So there is hope.
This is where we must disagree.
Forgive me, but your attitude toward others doesn’t sound Christian.

She asked pointed questions of potential appointees. That’s her job. And she did it without being uncivil. Also her job. People are able to criticize the president. It’s something else when the president engages in and encourages incivility among all citizens.

Yes but when you politicize everything it makes it worse. Take tariffs for example. I don’t remember where it had been a left or right thing before Trump. Or wearing face masks, you name it.

Wow, maybe more because even people who are simply related to people who “say the wrong thing” lose their jobs, etc., a feature more of totalitarianism than of a free nation.
YES!

And it seems these days the social power is being held by the money at the top and the algorithmic platform media (Google, facebook, twitter, youtube) they own instead of the president or the people, anymore. Their algorithms are invasive and controlling. The monopolies are outrageous these days. I dont think anyone is in a position to change that.

And my comment on the original article linked:
Almost every Republican presidential canidate who has ever run was behind in the polls. Meh.

I will say that I feel less free under Trump. I probably would have felt even less free under Clinton. Have the controls grown tighter because of Trump? Is it the president’s job to protect our freedoms? I suppose this is for another thread.

“The personal is political” is not an idea that conservatives promote.

Face masks as a recommendation were not polical (except insofar as it had previously recommended not to wear them) until they were mandated by MI state government just after they banned the sale of vegetable seeds (among other things) while leaving pot shops open…

Ah! A civil bigot. I think Strom Thurmond was one too. Well, for that matter, so is Barack Obama.
This isn’t the topic of this thread but she wasn’t being bigoted by demanding to know if an appointee could place the Constitution above personal associations.

Do you feel that seat belt laws are political?

They are two separate issues. A person could be fine with voluntarily using either but against laws requiring use.

Actually, a better case can be made for mandatory masks than for mandatory seatbelts. Seatbelts primarily protect the wearer, but masks primarily protect everyone else from the wearer.
