Wives, Submit to your own husbands as to the Lord

It’s still wrong. St. Paul’s exaplanation of the Great Mystery in Ephesians 5 doesn’t include husbands “claiming the role of Christ” in a marriage, and thus usurping Christ’s own role. All he is saying is that a sacramental marriage is meant to be a sign of Christ and the Church. We are to submit to our husbands as the Church does to Christ, and our Husbands are to love and sacrifice for us, as Christ did for the Church. Also, like Christ and the Church, which are one body, with Christ as the head, so a husband and wife are one body. Nobody says that the husband becomes Christ. Christ is still Christ. Make sense?
I can’t say that I agree with most of Angelo’s sentiments, but I actually think this is an important point. People, strange as it may seem, have taken it to mean that the man mediates for the woman he is married to in the same way Christ does, or even that the husband does become a Christ, or more commonly that he deserves the same recognition from his wife as she would give to Christ. All clearly inaccurate, but still believed by some Christians.

Yes, I have met unfortunate women in this situation. Now, I think the men involved might very likely be abusive jerks in any case, but this is their justification. And some of their churches back up their bad behavior by saying the wife needs to accept his dominance, no matter what it means, because it is through him she is justified. I suppose such groups probably encourage people with abusive tendencies to develop them to the fullest - rather like the divine right of kings.

Sounds like the news story that ran last year or the year prior…about the guy arrested for abusing women and children in texas (or instructing it I should say amongst the community) I think it was…all under the guise of ‘religion.’ (Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I think the sect was?) Yes…that is totally not what Christ meant. Christ was about love and sacrifice…why would Christ teach something that went against who He was, you know? Sad. 😦

Christ is requesting help not competition.

“And [Christ] went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”
– Matthew 9:35-38 KJV

“And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you. But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.”
– Luke 17:6-10 KJV

Psalm 9:

“I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High. When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence. For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging right. Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever. O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed cities; their memorial is perished with them. But the LORD shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment. And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness. The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee. Sing praises to the LORD, which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people his doings. When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble. Have mercy upon me, O LORD; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death: That I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion: I will rejoice in thy salvation. The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah. The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. For the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever. Arise, O LORD; let not man prevail: let the heathen be judged in thy sight. Put them in fear, O LORD: that the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah.”

Were these Catholic women, Bluegoat?

In any case, it doesn’t matter. The passage still means what it means, and the Church interprets it the way she has interpreted it for almost 2000 years. Only nuances have shifted in that time.

Someone abusing the system (so to speak) does not invalidate the system. To me, that’s like saying because there are so many divorces, or because there are homosexuals who get legally married, that somehow our concept of marriage needs to be tweaked or thrown out altogether. It’s the ones who are doing the distorting that are wrong.

I have never run into it to such an extreme among Catholics, although I have heard of less extreme versions of the same argument among Catholics of my grandparent’s generation.

But my point was that it is quite possible to misunderstand the passage, and so it is worth pointing out what is doesn’t mean.

Honestly, I see the husband and wife operating as a team, that they are to submit to EACH OTHER, meaning some days, the man has the last word, other days it’s the woman. It depends on what the decision is.

And really, some readings have to be taken into context. I think it’s more about love language (men = respect, women = love) than anything else. But I’ll be damned if I allow a man to treat me like a child who can’t make decisions.
I agree 100% with you. This reading was written in a context where women did not have the independance or education they had now and they were married as teenagers to older men. I don’t understand why anyone would think that in this day and age a woman can go to college, have a job and live on her own, but on the day that she gets married, she suddenly becomes unable to make decisions as wise as her husband. It’s simply ridiculous.

Fair enough. I pretty much agree except I personally don’t find it fruitful to talk about what it doesn’t mean until you’re faced with an instance of the passage being misconstrued in such a way. I say that because I see threads like this all the time. I mean, go back and read this thread from the start and you’ll see it…Ephesians 5 was mentioned and asked about, and a couple posts later the defensive “but it doesn’t mean wives literally are to submit to their husbands!” posts started pouring in.

Actually, that’s only selective. Susan B. Anthony, Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton spoke out AGAINST abortion, seeing it as a way to hurt women instead of helping them. Just check Susan B. Anthony List and Feminists for Life. They believe, like feminism does, that women should be empowered as men are, but for something greater.

I agree. Feminism does not equal destruction of the family and pro abortion. It is about the enpowerment of women for the greaater good. Not all men are anti feminists especially those who are knowledgeable and strong in themselves. Many, men and women, are still frightened by the term without really understanding.

It is about love and respect. Women have been given brains and free will too by God. Why should a woman have to depend on a man to lead her to God and salvation? Further if both husband and wife submit to Christ, that should be more than enough. It is certainly not necessary to push a certain view about those passages especially in an uncharitable manner.

If a woman believes she has to submit to her husband to be able to submit to Christ, that is her perogative too.

It’s not about that at all. Any given wife may indeed be objectively more wise than her husband, but he’s still the husband, and therefore her head. The roles are what is different. Any idea that the woman’s role is less important or less dignified than a man’s comes from people who are misinterpreting the passage and the contex. The Bible never says anything like that. Don’t try to cheat men or women out of being who we were created to be.

In other words…you choosing to believe that the woman’s role is “lesser” doesn’t mean that it actually is, and doesn’t change the reality of the Great Mystery.

Where does the Bible or the Church say that the husband is supposed to submit to the wife just as she is to submit to him?

It’s also what the Bible says. Minus that part yall have made up about marital submission equalling submission to Christ.

That’s exactly what I have a problem with. The fact that just because of your gender, your opinion will be either more or less important than that of your spouse to take a decision, regardless of your knowledge and abilities regarding the decision.

Once again, in Biblical times when women were younger and uneducated, it made sense for the man to automatically be in charge, and for the wife to submit. If some women nowadays want to submit automatically to their husband’s decisions I don’t have a problem with it, but I think it’s a personal decision.

Yes, it is a personal decision ,not a requirement Christ placed on us. I have pointed out before that even the RCC does not now require a wife to obey her husband in the marriage vows.

I’m sorry you have a problem with it. But you need to take that up with God. Nobody here is making this stuff up. And again, nobody has said that that the woman’s opinion is less important but you. You’re projecting your own ideas onto the concept of a Christian marriage.

Remember, it’s a Great Mystery, representing Christ and the Church and in accordance with the natures God gave us. It’s not something you can pick apart in a sociology class.

You all who “know” best" and have the “correct” interpretation should be very proud of yourselves. We all sinners keep searching for knowledge and God’s truth.

We all have not made things up. Please do try not to misquote. Many have explained correctly about those passages frequently quoted by you all to justify your position. Since those explanations are not in line with your views, you either ignore them or put them down.

*I think the problem that some of you are having with the verse, is that you reading it to mean that a woman can’t be ‘herself’ anymore, once she is married. That is not true. When two marry, they become one flesh. They make decisions together, but the man of the relationship has a responsibility to his wife, and the wife to her husband. It doesn’t mean she loses her identity, or is treated like an endentured servant. lol She submits to better the marriage, and to do what is best for the marriage…but she doesn’t lose who she is as an individual. She doesn’t lose her uniqueness. Any man who wishes his wife to lose who she is as an individual, misinterprets the passage, also.

Simply put in modern terms, God doesn’t want us competing with one another in marriage. My husband’s role is different than mine. I can’t be a husband, and he can’t be a wife. We are a team, I think…but I do trust in him with decisions. This SHOULD bolster the relationshp, but in many marriages, the passage is misinterpreted, and bullying and abusive men think the passage gives them license to be cruel to their wives.

Jesus stooped down to wash His Apostles feet! We are called to do the same. Men are called to respect and love their wives as Jesus loved the Church. We don’t place our husbands before God, however. If my husband were to be leading the family down a dark path, I wouldn’t submit to this. I wouldn’t stray from God, and His teachings, to please my husband. We are not to put our husbands before God. That is the key, here. In the partnership of marriage, a wife and husband are trying to help one another to heaven. Their respective roles are pleasing to God. *

No, I don’t think I know best. We’ve just been telling you what the Bible plainly says and what the Church’s interpretation of it is. Not my own interpretation or what I want it to mean…but the Church’s. If you don’t want to take my word for it, please…look it up for yourself.

Part of this that is really galling to wives who have a problem with this passage to begin with, is that it means obeying him WITHOUT being his conscience. So many women LOVE to tell their husbands that they are wrong, and use their own rightness as a weapon.

Good point. 🙂

It is hard to have to learn to be humble. I’m still learning and nowhere near to being successful in this area, not yet. Husbands are called to do the same thing, just not in the same way.

Seriously, I’ve been studying this for awhile now, and if you put the responsibilities and roles of husbands and wives next to eachother, the men are the ones who really have it worse. When a man gets married and fathers children, his life as he knew it before is basically over. (Not talking about the unfortunate reality of many men/marriages, but about what they are called to be.) If anything goes wrong in the family, it’s ultimately, to some extent, on his shoulders. It’s a lot of responsibility and requires a heck of a lotta sacrifices. When I think about that…there’s no way I can justify griping about my own responsibilities as a wife.
