Obama is not a Muslim. None of his values are acceptable Islam practices.
  • He has a dog
  • He is pro-abortion
  • He is pro same sex marriage
Obama is an Atheist.
He claims to be a (liberal) Christian, do you have any reason to doubt his sincerity?

It shouldn’t be difficult to cover eyes in Saudi Arabia. Their laws are not like ours, are they? I mean, are they not already pretty much there anyway? Our society would have difficulty adjusting to a law such as covering eyes.

Isn’t it part of the subterfuge, to conceal Muslim identity, by temporarily suspending rules? For example, did the WTC pilots not shave, in order to carry out their mission?

Thank you for the article, Gary. I printed it out to share with my friends.

I thought some of them already use it.
What are you trying to say?
That Muslim women are already so opressed that a law like this doesn’t matter?

Sorry, I’ve taken the thread off topic enough with my remarks. :o

I just wanted to point out that Obama could not possibly be Muslim.

Not strictly true. I grew up with Muslim friends and work with Muslims, and I can assure you that the attitudes towards women are cultural.

For example, there is nothing in the Qur’an which says that women must cover up like that. Therefore it is culture, not religion.
Not quite.
In Saudi Arabia its very much both, the Saudi kingdom is a theocracy, and secular and religious law is the same there.

Islam has many different denominations just like Christianity does.

But you are still confusing Saudi with Islam in general. Yes, in Saudi they merge but that is not true of Islam as a whole.

There’s a great deal of overlap in these areas–religion, secularism, [Islamic-influenced] culture, and law. that the distinctions are difficult to draw. I must disagree with both of you Atheist and Lime. What is clear however is that covering the eyes has not the universal norm among Muslims today even in Saudi Arabia.

There is a business opportunity to sell sunglasses to Saudi Arabia.

If these girls were subjected so such ordeal under Islamic standards, I wonder what would be the punishment for American girls who dare bare all and do every filthy thing under the sun openly?

Foreign women are also required to cover up and go around with a male escort. They can however leave their faces exposed, but the hair, ?neck, etc must be covered up. The punishment would probably be deportation in the least, and possibly imprisonment/whipping/fine with that as well possibly.

The Saudi’s do not represent Islam?! They are a big population in Islam (the Wahabbi, who have influence throughout all of the lands of Mohamaddenism) and Saudi Arabia is the birthplace and the main holy site of all of Dar-al-Islam. Westboro Baptist Church is a very small fringe group originating from the middle of nowhere, and nowhere near any major seat of Christianity (nor does it have popular followings outside of the United States). and as for it having popular following in the US?
Good point. KSA rules over the holy sites of Mecca and Medina. These are the two most important sites for Muslims and every Muslim is required to make a pilgrimage there at least once in his lifetime (as long as he can afford it or his health allows). You could say that KSA Mullahs/Clerics are the Vatican of Christianity, but more so, since every Muslim has to respect Mecca and Medina.

I’ve never understood why the obvious answer isn’t for men to be blindfolded outside the house and led around by their mothers.
Because someone has to actually work outside - shepherd the camels and sheep for example. These people live in arid conditions, it would be silly to blindfold the men and have the women tend to children and the house. The female attire is actually useful in a hot desert scenario, except for the fact that the fabric is black and not white, which heats up more than the white material the men wear.

Note that in the privacy of their homes, the Saudi women wear very risque lingerie for their husbands, but obviously ONLY for their husbands.

Muslims need to drink beer with hops to curb their libido and help with their self control. That’s what and why the Christian monks did.
Alcohol actually leads to disinhibition. But rape/sexual assault is much less common in Muslim countries than in the West.

Technically foreign women do not have to cover their hair, they only have to wear the abaya. But the muttawa would often still tell foreign women to cover their hair regardless. I remember being in a shopping centre and they told my father to get my mother to cover her hair. My father just responded that she didn’t have to and we walked away. Some young Saudi men who were close by cheered him for standing up to them. So I have some hope for change, as the younger generation comes into power.

That is probably an issue with reporting of the offence rather than it doesn’t happen. In those cultures, a woman is to blame if she is assaulted and can be severely punished. So sexual assaults are probably not reported to the extent that they happen.

No-one is that stupid. Even foreigners know better than that.

That is a point I often also hear made about the low rate of rape in Japan. However, I’m not sure if it’s really correct. One sometimes hears of honour killings and such but they’re usually reported by organisations with an agenda to push with single cases being highlighted of for example a Muslim girl falling for a Hindu man to be later captured by her family and slain. Muslim fathers and brothers also love their daughters/sisters and as they live with them, they know what they’re like. I doubt most would be fooled into thinking their good Muslim daughter was being promiscuous and un-Islamic in character very easily. It would be great to get some information about this from genuinely neutral organisations and not advocacy groups with biases to push.

Islam has many different denominations just like Christianity does.
Islam has many cultures too. The desert culture of Arabia requires all people to cover up just liken Arctic cultures require parkas and mukluks.
This is the culture that Islam has normalized and exported
Saudi Arabia and Wahabbism just take the commands of Islam to the extreme. Hijabs may not be at odds with the climate of other lands or the requirements of modern life, but what Wahabbism demands certainly is.

Unfortunately, Wahabbism has the money and the energy behind it. What was true for Muslim women is no longer the case today. In the fifties, no women graduating out of Egyptian university, for example, even wore a had scarf. Today, the exact opposite is true.
Tomorrow, with Wahabbism taking hold even in Egypt, who knows.

So many here make the mistake that just because their personal Muslim buddies aren’t like that, that this is not true of Islam in general, that it is just the Westboro people of Islam pushing this kind of interpretation.
This of course does not add up. While personal experience is invaluable, becoming educated means efforts to expand your own worldview beyond just personal experience.
