No fast-food company has become more associated with philanthropic and charable work than McDonald’s and its Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). The group is the umbrella organization for numerous charities that serve children in 52 countries. Founded in 1974, Ronald McDonald House gives free or low-cost lodging to families who have children undergoing medical treatment at hospitals outside their communities.
The lesser known organization , Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, provides pediatric medical and dental care in poor and underserved areas. Last year, Care Mobile helped provide pediatric asthma services to seven Pittsburgh neighborhoods where untreated asthma has been pervasive.
In 2008, RMHC charities contributed about $3.3 million dollars toward college scholarships for African-American and Latino high school seniors in need and who show a high level of academic achievement and community involvement. The RMHC of Philadelphia recently announced they’ll be awarding $69,000 in scholarships to 45 students for the 2009-2010 academic year.
