Well I am going to wade into this morass of a thread.

If you want to influence behavior of businesses ( wages paid ) , you need to patronize those that behave in the way you want.

In and Out burger treats its folks quite well

Dick’s ( a local chain here in Seattle ) provides childcare assistance, textbook funds for students, and a variety of other benefits ( ddir.com/employment )

As soon as I saw this article on Yahoo I knew which one they were going to make look good. I knew they were going to say that Costco was the best one because Costco gives to the Democrat party which champions “abortion rights” and so-called “same-sex marriage”. It fits with Yahoo’s usual faux news stories which in one way or the other promote Yahoo’s not so hidden left agenda. As others have pointed out, it’s an unfair apples to oranges comparison. If Yahoo wanted to make a fair comparison they would have compared Costco to Sam’s Club.

WOW, I did not know that Costco gives to the Democratic party. No wonder my SIL is so big on it. She makes sure to let us know every time she gets something from there.

This article seems to be using Sam’s Club and Walmart interchangeably.
It actually talks more about Walmart, but the idea is that people will compare Walmart or McDonalds to Costco and say these companies should pay what costco does. The problem with this type of argument is that if we moved in that direction we would have a higher unemployment rate because Costco uses less employees per unit of sales than these other companies.

Ok, Thanks. We would also have less choices, since Costco has a lot less inventory than Walmart.

Dick’s has the added bonus of having great shakes and burgers - reasonably priced. And it dates back to the days when Seattle was a much smaller city than it is now.

That is just to logical! 👍

This has been my point all along. Do we pay people according to how many family members they support even if they do the same job. This justification has been used to pay women less, because their husbands were the primary wage earners.
Talk about a 55 gallon drum of worms! Should healthy people be paid less than sick people? Do you get an automatic raise if you make another baby? Do you get a salary reduction if a child dies or gets married? If you cannot control your spending, does the employer have to subsidize foolish behavior? That last one is a special interest of mine because I see a lot of people complain about poverty when they spend money on luxuries I don’t have, but I am somehow required to pay more for products or taxes so they can have tobacco, alcohol, fast food, recreational drugs, or cell phones.

I’d have to see what their positions are. Certainly a fast food worker is not going to make the same wage as a forklift driver, so this article isn’t exactly honest.

I’m betting the forklift driver’s pay at Cosco of $22.00/hour includes his benefits. You can’t compare Wal-Mart to Cosco because Cosco is members only. Probably a better comparison is Sam’s Club.

Regarding friendly employees, Sam’s Club has extremely friendly employees. They go out of their way to make the shopping experience easy. The clothes are constantly folded, and rarely do I find an item out of place. Sam’s Club also hires a lot of elderly people. Is that good or bad?
I’m not so sure about Sam’s employees friendliness. Here they have no competition from Costco or anyone else and the often take things for granted.

Recently I bought a high dollar Blue Ray/sound system combo from Sam’s, not knowing that if you don’t have Wifi it will not work. I returned it for a refund since it had not even been set up completely. They outright refused a refund and it took 2 hours to finally get store credit from them. At the local Sam’s club the customer is always wrong and they treat you like dirt.

I know someone who works at WalMart making $13 an hour, but they’ve been there 20 years.
In 1983 the starting wage for a UPS part time employee was $11.00 an hour with benefits for the entire family. I would argue the health insurance they received was better than 99% of all posters on here. Major medical was $50.00 dollars for the entire family, full dental and vision. Two weeks vacation you’re first year plus 5 sick days and 5 personal days, you then accrued a vacation every 5 years.

How times have changed!!!

The dignity of the human person and the family unit has been pushed aside by mainstream society to the point that they are ultimately considered not to matter very much…and our society speaks with its money the loudest.

When I started there in 1987 the starting wage was $8/hr - which we thought was pretty good. The benefits were great. I don’t remember how much vacation I accrued in the 6 years I worked there but for the sake of my physical well-being I’m glad I quit - you worked your tail off at UPS. After about 6 years I think I was making about $14/hr. Then the delivery drivers made a pretty good living, if your body could hold up. We had a strong union at UPS too - the Teamsters.

I think we have increasingly given the government a bigger and bigger role in people’s lives - such that more and more people expect the government to take care of them. It is no longer one’s own responsibility, but the government, via the taxpayer.

You are correct! I started in 87 and they have made record profits every year without fail. Don’t misunderstand me, I want the company to be very profitable, but I also expect justice for a fair’s day pay. Want to guess what the starting wage is today for the same position?🙂 I won’t keep you in suspense, $9.00 bucks:( Benefits have been pillaged even with all the automation “to make the job easier”, the expectation for productivity is “never good enough.”
And they wonder why the turn over is so high.

Belloc and Chesterton were prophets. We have become wage slaves some willingly most out of necessity. I’m glad I got my time in and still have some quality of life.

Ishii,

You beat me!! lol Yes if you saved you’re contract book, in the 87 Union Agreement you can see the 1983 pay rate. If you worked the morning shift you received a dollar more for “getting out of bed.” So you worked the evening? Softie:) Just Kidding!

Yes the union sold out the part timers in order to negotiate the BIG money for the full-timers. I was pushing six figures working 60 hours. I had two sons grow up without me. Most guy’s leave there with major medical problems. I was one but I knew what it entailed. When I retired my hourly was $35 and some change, and as soon as I hit my eight I was on overtime. They could easily pay double including benefits package. I have never seen a money making machine in my life!! I pulled a trailer to Best Buy everyday for a year. I delivered everyday over 1000 next day air packages at $23.00 a pop. I was at that stop less than 20 minutes most days. That is just one delivery. Now think about that across the USA? Worldwide? And they waste so much money! I have never seen such waste and they just shrug it off!!?

UPS now starts at minimum wage? Wow. I guess they believe that they can operate the business successfully having a different wage scale. That’s too bad. I wonder if they are expected to be as productive as they expected us to be. Nice to see the drivers are still making a good wage - about $26/hr. So it would seem the drivers are being paid a living wage? I worked their part time during college - I didn’t want to be working there for my career. There are a lot of businesses that had great benefits but had to reduce them - due to high costs, etc.

That has not been my experience. I am at Sam’s club once a week. They people are so friendly. What looks like long lines are quick. I rarely wait more than five minutes in line. And I shop there Saturday afternoons - prime time. I have had no problems returning things, though I rarely do.

No, you can blame this lack of respect for the dignity of the human person on the abortion industry and the euthanasia industry.
