I have to say that election draws the whole of scripture together and causes one to really take a look at the passages that you are speaking of…the only reason one does not enter heaven is because of unbelief…many will say…“well you can lose it through willful and premeditated sin” - but what is the root of that sin if it is wilful, premediated, and continues on in the life of that individual?? It is unbelief. My attitude about Calvinist predestination is this. If I am one of the elect and Calvinism is correct, than I will die a Calvinist. If I do not die a Calvinist and I go to Hell, there was nothing I could do to change that fact.
I believe that there is an elect and that the elect will be infallibly saved. They can never fall away. However, the Bible indicates that there are those who genuinely experience justification (i.e. partaking of the Holy Spirit, sanctification by the blood of Christ), but will lose this grace. These were not numbered among the elect and the fact that they fell away and died in that state demonstrates that they were never of the elect. I don’t believe that God does not simply pass over the non-elect. Rather, he gives them a genuine opportunity to experience His saving grace, but allows them to remain in their sin when they chose to turn away from Him. I believe that no one can have absolute assurance that they are of the elect. A person can easily deceive him or herself.
I believe that God sanctifies the elect by the blood of Christ and gives them the gift of faith, the holy Spirit and the graces necessary to conform their lives to the free gift of righteousness by living righteously, thus fulfilling the requirements He Himself has established for their salvation. However, I believe he incorporates the elect’s free will in accomplishing His plan of salvation.
This is what I believe and this is what I believe the Bible teaches.
God Bless,
Michael
What you say if that you can have true genuine faith in Christ (which is a gift of God) but still fall away…but we are told…
1 Corinthians 15:1-2 NAS95 1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, **if you hold fast the word **which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
On the other hand…
Hebrews 3:14 NAS95 14 For we **have become **partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end,
If you use only these few controversial passages to say that there must be a group of non-elect Christians, I would ask that you look for that non-elect yet justified group elsewhere in scripture…but you will not find them. All Christians are looked upon as the elect…
Ephesians 1:3-4 NAS95 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love
1 Peter 1:2 KJV 2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
1 Peter 5:13 KJV 13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
2 Peter 1:10 KJV 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
There only those whom He has mercy on and those who are hardened…
Romans 9:13-20 KJV 13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. 14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. 15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. 17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. 19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? 20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
