No, I would not be offended. You are “100% positive” that LDS is “the way,” so then you must be 100% positive that Catholicism isn’t the way. I can disagree with you, and not be offended. Starting from this point, we can then discuss why we each believe the other is wrong, but if we’re both right and nobody’s wrong, then what is there to discuss?

I don’t understand this trend of being afraid of telling someone they’re wrong. It makes absolutely no sense to have the attitude that “you believe what you want, I’ll believe what I want, and even if our beliefs completely contradict each other, neither of us is wrong.”

There is right and there is wrong. Period. I don’t remember Jesus ever saying, “go forth to the nations and try to make my gospel much more attractive than their already held, equally valid beliefs.”
I’m not afraid, I just show respect to those who don’t want to hear it told outright. You are 100% right though, although this may not be the place to discuss it, seeing as we are somewhat off topic

It is possible to respectfully tell people they’re wrong, even if they don’t want to hear the truth. We are off the topic, though.

Think nothing of it. She is talking a lot of nonsense as usual. I have been posting here since September 2006, and I can inform you that the average number of Mormon threads here today is no greater than they have ever been; nor indeed are the number of Mormons that much greater. Just some old faces have gone, and some new ones have arrived. And most of the threads are started by non-Mormons—or anti-Mormons like Patty anyway. Very few of them have been started by Mormons. Mormons are here to respond to questions and/or false accusations by non-Mormons and anti-Mormons. Stop those, and Mormons will mostly disappear.

Please don’t say I am a Anti-Mormon. You don’t know me well enough to make that claim thank you

You know what Patty? I am more than happy to be termed “anti-mormon”. I’m against mormonism in every fiber of my being.

A more correct term is that I am an “Anti-Mormonism” person. I’m not against the individuals, but I am against all that they teach and profess to believe as well as those things that they try to sweep under the rug and explain away and… well, you get the picture.

That’s right Steph! 👍 There are many Mormons that will describe someone as “Anti” at the slightest hint of disagreement ~ it’s almost like a reflex. And it is often immediately personalized and viewed as a personal attack. As our “dear leader” would say, “that’s a false choice.” 😉

But we can be opposed to Mormonism, which we Catholics, at the very least, consider a heresy, without being anti-Mormon (i.e. we can distinguish between being opposed to the Mormon faith without being opposed to the people that believe in Mormonism.)

Some of my oldest and dearest friends are Mormons. The same can be said for some of my other family members. We are NOT anti-Mormon but we do not support Mormonism. There’s a big difference.

I trust that fair-minded Mormons can understand, if not personally relate, to such sentiments. Of course if they’re not fair-minded then they probably won’t. 😃

One determines the ‘anti-(insert belief system here)’ status of someone, not by whether one is acquainted or not, but by what that person does, says and writes.

Now me, I figure that there is a very big difference between a ‘critic’ and an ‘anti.’ Critics disagree, sometimes vehemently, with a specific idea or belief system, but there is a line they will not cross.

Antis cross it.

Anti’s will deliberately mislead others about what the target belief system teaches in order to disparage or discredit it. When they are corrected by the believer, they will ignore it and repeat it on other occasions.

Anti’s engage in activities like: harassment, picketing, mockery, lying, repeating untrue accusations, twisting statements, and taking quotes out of context, among other things.

Anti’s tend to be self-righteous boobs whose aim in life is not to ‘save’ the folks in the target belief system; their true purpose is to make certain that those folks go to the hell that the anti thinks they belong in.

Very, very few of the posters on this forum are what I would term “antis,” I’ve run into maybe–two. I have no idea whether you are one or not: I haven’t read very many of your posts yet.

I’ll get back to you.

wow you just described the mormon church as a whole. would you like to see specific examples of every one of your points? i suppose we could debate the part about “true purpose” but the rest is crystal clear

LOL ain’t that the truth!!! The way they accuse others of what they themselves are guilty is beyond comprehension.

Majick, don’t you wish such flair for the dramatic and such a rich imagination could be put to some productive use? 😉

IMHO, mormons are hyper-defensive because they know that what they are attempting to defend is an elaborate con-game that will not stand up to scrutiny. So, much noise, tap-dancing and smoke is generated in the hope of diverting attention away from the fact that their founder was a crook, their theology is pagan and their “church” is not Christian. I am not “anti-mormon” so much as I am anti-BS. Motto of mormonism, “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!”

The LDS people I know (and I know quite a few) are some of the most sincere, thoughtful, spiritual, and devoted people there are. Let’s not judge other people’s motives. (the Lord’s prayer comes to mind here). As for LDS being pagan and non-Christian, that is utter rubbish. They’re every bit as Christian as the Arian’s were and no one ever called them non-Christian. If you wish to discuss the finer points of specific issues thats fine. But, this kind of hateful bigotry has no place here.

I agree that many LDS people are good examples of religious zeal for example. However to say that no-one ever called them non-Christian is untrue. Joseph and Brigham were quite clear that they were not Christians and had some very harsh things to say about Christians who were compared unfavourably with Moslems by the early LDS. Non Mormons including Christians are called ‘Gentiles’ in the LDS (not a positive term), further the Church does not consider them Christian in that they, unlike genuine Christians, have to be baptised on conversion to the Church. Mormonism is a terrible heresy and we cannot pretend otherwise even allowing what is positive in their lifestyles and commitment.

Thank you for that information Stevie.

I knew that for decades Mormons set themselves apart, and are only more recently attempting to appear more “mainstream”. It’s helpful to have the additional information that, at least originally, Mormons did not describe themselves as Christian. That makes sense, in view of the way Christianity, and the Catholic Church in particular, were originally viewed and described by Mormons.

I may be a bit hotter than you on the subject, but I agree wholeheartedly with your strategy. Given the LDS persecution complex, and basic Christian morality, hatred has no place in discussion of the subject. It is only the hard inner core of Mormonism (Brighamites, I call them), and their religion, and “creative history” that I have trouble with. Let’s calm down and be as objective as we can. Anger never got anyone anywhere good.

Thank you. Catholics are among the most decent and honorable people on the planet. Unfortunately the Mormon apostates and anti-Mormons here give them a bad name. Anybody coming here and reading these threads will think that all the Catholics think the same way as they do, which of course they don’t. They are a negligible minority who happen to have found a voice here to vent their anti-Mormonism. They don’t represent the vast majority of Catholics at all.

And by the way, be wary of those who have just joined the forum and have few posts to their credit. They are often the same folks registering under multiple names. They try to give the impression that they are a bigger crowd than they are, or reinforce their own statements by patting themselves on the back. On some boards registering under multiple names is banned. I wish they would adopt the same policy here.

Ok, you show me where Mormons have picketed any other church with signs and pamphlets saying that the folks in that church are going to hell.

You show me where any Mormon has put pamphlets under the windshield of the cars at a funeral at another church saying ‘The deceased is in hell and you will soon follow if you don’t leave the devil…(insert religion here) church’

You show me all the publications by official LDS sources that specifically target another religion with comparison after comparison of beliefs, deliberately taking the other guy’s beliefs out of context/ lying about them, etc.

You show me the LDS published book entitled “The Maze of…(whatever)”

You show me the Mormons who block the entrances to Catholic churches and cathedrals, shouting and singing at the top of their lungs so that worshipers have to run a gauntlet to attend services.

You show me where Mormons are in YOUR forums (not forums labeled 'non-Catholic religions) telling you that you are going to go to hell and disparaging your faith. In fact, go to any usenet internet group devoted to the subject of any religion other than Mormonism, and show me a Mormon who is there behaving the way non-Mormons do in newsgroups dedicated to the discussion of Mormonism.

G’head. Do that.

I’ll wait.

Now I USED to be able to say that you won’t find anybody. However, I ran into one idiot Mormon who was actually DOING that in a Baptist newsgroup…just before five other Mormons, including me, hauled him over the virtual coals for so doing. Turns out that he was a recent convert and didn’t know any better. He was just continuing the tactics he had been taught in his old church.

He apologized.

No sir, in this we get the high road, and you know it.

Y’know, it is interesting that I list all the things that I think would make an anti an anti, and then mention that I’d only run into one or two such antis on this group.

You would think that those reading this would take it for the compliment it actually was, since what I wrote was that most of the people on this group were not guilty of such behavior. Nor was I talking about anti-Mormons in particular…I was talking about anti’s in general…

Including anti-Catholics or anti-anything else’s.

Perhaps the folks who responded so defensively should go back and re-read my post—and consider what their responses have just revealed about them.

Diana’s post has some validity. Those tactics are NOT the appropriate and Christian way to do it. And I doubt that anyone here does things like that.

As I said in my post, I have run into perhaps two who would. Most of you are not ‘anti’s’ as I would categorize one.

Actually, the appropriate and Christian way to ‘do it.’ That is, to teach the truth, is to simply teach the truth as you believe it.

It’s like a hallway full of lanterns; if only one is lit, then it doesn’t matter how many are not, or what they look like, or how big they are; those carrying the unlit lanterns will put them down and pick up the light…and all the glowing lantern needs to do is shine its own light. It doesn’t need to point out the darkness in the others.

I have always wondered what it is about other religions that feel the need to do this; when they talk to me, for instance, it is as if they hide their light behind their backs so that I can’t see it–and won’t show it to me until I admit that what I carry isn’t as good as what they do.

How can I do that, if I don’t know what it is they have?

Invariably, what I get is 'you believe this and it’s wrong."…but without telling me a: why it’s so wrong and b; what they have that is better.

It is as if they define themselves by us; “You believe this and we don’t.” Which would be fine, if we actually happened to believe what ever it is they claim we do.

…and we usually don’t.

Oh, never mind. This is useless.

Would you not be offended if I outright stated you were wrong and cited it as a fact? Would you not feel put upon or annoyed? I believe we are right, and I would shout it from the rooftops until my voice goes, but I won’t explicitly state “You’re wrong” to someone as a fact. Not because I’m unsure of my beliefs (I am 100% positive about LDS being the way) but because I want to respect the fact that other people see things differently, even if I devote all my time to convincing the person to think our way.
Pumpkin, could you please tell me why your religion is right, and ours is wrong?
