Ok, Toby. Sorry about the name thing.

If God has no physical image, could it be possible that “in His image” refers to our souls? If so, what difference does our physical appearance make?

Peace

Tim
Other creatures such as apes do not have souls. God physically describes how he molded us and fashioned us from nothing not fashioning from other creatures

Biological definitions are not “Catholic”. If you won’t accept standard scientific nomenclature, you should probably bow out of this discussion at this point.

Peace

Tim
again why should I accept science over God or instead of God??

Actually that is not true. Other non-human animals don’t have immortal souls, but they do have mortal souls.

Yes, but if God has no image since He is spirit, doesn’t that rule out our physical apperance as the “in His image”?

Tim

You shouldn’t and nobody on this thread has suggested that you should. You have used that as a dodge to keep from answering some questions, but that isn’t choice you have been asked to make.

Did you know that the Church does not have a problem with science? Even if the scientist isn’t Catholic? There are even agnostics on the Pontifical Academy of Sciences that reports directly to the Pope.

and please don’t refer to me as sir or Mr. My name is Toby or use my nickname. which is Tobinator

maybe the Haydock Bible Commentary will help understand God’s creation as stated in Genesis and God’s image

It doesn’t really help, because it was published in 1859, the same year The Origin of Species appeared. As Pope John Paul II would have recognized, the science of evolutionary biology renders Haydock obsolete with respect to science, although not of coruse with respect to theology.👍 .

The Haydock Bible Commentary is not obsolete. Why would anyone believe in meaningless mumbo jumbo of Darwin. Darwin himself didn’t know weather God existed. I am 10000000000000000% sure that God exists. By rejecting the teachings in the Bible you are rejecting God. Just out of curiosity what religion are you?? Have you read the Bible?? Do you reject it? Do you reject God?? The Bible taught us how the world was created. Rejecting that is rejecting God

Human evolution from a Catholic Source?

How about from the Pope?

**While the story of human origins is complex and subject to revision, physical anthropology and molecular biology combine to make a convincing case for the origin of the human species in Africa about 150,000 years ago in a humanoid population of common genetic lineage. **
Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI

You ask many questions. my answers:
  1. Roman Catholic
  2. Yes - cover-to-cover
  3. No

A catholic source from the Vatican’s website. Pope Pius encyclical Humani Generis
  1. If anyone examines the state of affairs outside the Christian fold, he will easily discover the principle trends that not a few learned men are following. Some imprudently and indiscreetly hold that evolution, which has not been fully proved even in the domain of natural sciences, explains the origin of all things, and audaciously support the monistic and pantheistic opinion that the world is in continual evolution. Communists gladly subscribe to this opinion so that, when the souls of men have been deprived of every idea of a personal God, they may the more efficaciously defend and propagate their dialectical materialism.
  2. Such fictitious tenets of evolution which repudiate all that is absolute, firm and immutable, have paved the way for the new erroneous philosophy which, rivaling idealism, immanentism and pragmatism, has assumed the name of existentialism, since it concerns itself only with existence of individual things and neglects all consideration of their immutable essences.
  3. It remains for Us now to speak about those questions which, although they pertain to the positive sciences, are nevertheless more or less connected with the truths of the Christian faith. In fact, not a few insistently demand that the Catholic religion take these sciences into account as much as possible. This certainly would be praiseworthy in the case of clearly proved facts; but caution must be used when there is rather question of hypotheses, having some sort of scientific foundation, in which the doctrine contained in Sacred Scripture or in Tradition is involved. If such conjectural opinions are directly or indirectly opposed to the doctrine revealed by God, then the demand that they be recognized can in no way be admitted.
  4. For these reasons the Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter - for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God. However, this must be done in such a way that the reasons for both opinions, that is, those favorable and those unfavorable to evolution, be weighed and judged with the necessary seriousness, moderation and measure, and provided that all are prepared to submit to the judgment of the Church, to whom Christ has given the mission of interpreting authentically the Sacred Scriptures and of defending the dogmas of faith.[11] Some however, rashly transgress this liberty of discussion, when they act as if the origin of the human body from pre-existing and living matter were already completely certain and proved by the facts which have been discovered up to now and by reasoning on those facts, and as if there were nothing in the sources of divine revelation which demands the greatest moderation and caution in this question.

tobin, what religion are you? I can’t be certain from the content of your posts or their tone, so I’m asking, just out of curiosity.

Do you reject God? Have you read the Bible?

He’s Catholic. While I understand the sense of your post, I would really like it if we could get past asking these kind of questions.

Peace

if he interrogates others, he should be willing to respond to the same.

Maybe I am just very used to people like Toby coming along and questioning my faith because I am not a creationist, but it is tiring. Yes, he started it but that doesn’t mean that we have to continue it. We shouldn’t be questioning each other’s faith.

Peace

Tim
