20 Truths about Mormons

On one mormon aplogetics site, in the FAQ section, a person asked whether early mormons thought joseph was the Holy Ghost incarnate. Well, the apologist said that was the case. It fit into some of the comments about joseph that fellow mormons made to me. Some early mormons thought that he had been the Holy Ghost incarnate for this dispensation
That is news to me. Why don’t you link the site that said such a thing. I tend to doubt what you are saying. JS never referred to himself as the holy ghost. What mormons thought of him after his death would all be a matter of opinion. However, even on the anti mormon sites this has not been mentioned and I do follow the antimormon sites.

So, please link where this statement was made. 🙂

Also, alot of mormon historians ( some excommunicated for telling the truth) admit Joseph was involved in magic. We know he was involved in glass looking and folk magic but I believe it goes much deeper.
I have read about this in Rough Stone Rolling by Richard Bushman and he is still around.

No excommunication for him. 🤷

One last thing. We went to carthage jail where smith was shot and killed. We got the weeping tour guide ( crying seems to be a way of life for some mormons) and got to sit in the room where it happened. One problem, he never mentioned the fact that Joseph and Hyrum both had guns and joseph actually shot 3 people! I asked the question to our group leader and he nervously affirmed the truth. Joseph had every right to shoot back but why does it never get shown in the mormon movies or in the tour itself? Any organization that hides its history is not of God, in my opinion.
Joseph Smith was given the gun by one of the guards as a way to protect himself. I think that it was awfully nice of the guard to do so. It was basically a pea shooter…no match for the mob. Did he fire it? Yes, he did. You forget that the mob killed his brother before they got to Joseph. Also, John Taylor was also shot. JS defended himself as best as he could. No one knows if anyone was hit by any of JS’s bullets, as far as I know.

Fact: The brothers were murdered by a mob of men who wanted innocent blood. JS firing at the armed, blood-thirsty mob is a minor point.

You need to read just how the excommunication proceedings work. It is not so simple. It happens at the local level through a Bishop’s Court. Salt Lake has very little to do with it. And one can defend oneself if one wishes.

If I become a catholic apostate and begin to preach false doctrine…what happens to me. Wasn’t a bishop excommunicated for marrying priests somewhere in Africa?

the fact is that joseph shooting the gun is not mentioned at the tour. he had a right to defend himself. I can tell you are a mormon by what you write. I used to be one. Why were they in prison to begin with? How many married women did joseph marry? Who was fannie alger? i think you need to look at your faith. you go to a catholic website to spouse mormon beliefs. that makes little sense. do you need more people to believe so you don’t feel so isolated in your odd beliefs. that’s the way i felt. i craved debates with people so i could prove mormonism is true. FARMS gave me comfort as well. but i had those wake up in the middle of the night moments where no amount of propaganda could bring comfort. I couldn’t believe a lie no matter how much i like my mormon friends, girlfriend and ward. I knew my salvation depended on finding and following the truth. The trinity is what unites christians, if you don’t believe it then you are not a christian. That’s the truth. Read early church history, not Nibley church history.

not exactly. it depends on the situation. melchizadek priesthood holders are usually tried by the Stake High council with the final decision made by the Stake President.

Salt Lake can easily direct these things to happen and they have in the past when they felt it was necessary.

If it was preaching false doctrine, I could understand but when it’s a refusal to suppress facts and substitute faith promoting stories for the truth then I see a problem. Anyone who has read the actual LDS materials on the history of the translation of the BoM, for example, knows that the pictures they show the primary kids of joseph holding the plates with oliver on the other side of the curtain are made up. These historians were exed because they wouldn’t be party to the Orwellian ideas of Boyd K. Packer.

It fit into some of the comments about joseph that fellow mormons made to me. Some early mormons thought that he had been the Holy Ghost incarnate for this dispensation. This idea was condemned by one of the presidents but I’m convinced Brigham Young thought it was true. He was crazy in general.
Joseph apparently hinted to- or told some people that he was the incarnation of the Holy Ghost. Some of the young girls that he pressured into “marrying” him wrote in their journals and letters that Joseph had revealed to them his “true identity” and that after knowing who he really was, they could no longer refuse his advances. It’s good to be the Holy Ghost!

It would make sense to a Mormon, because they teach that the Holy Ghost will eventually need to be born into a human body to achieve full exaltation.

The notion seems to have leaked out into the general Mormon population after that - people do talk after all. If non-Mormons learned of these claims, that would certainly have been fuel for the anti-Smith fire that ensued.

And some people revere this guy as a prophet.
Paul

The belief that joseph was the Holy Ghost is addressed in the FAQ section of the F.A.I.R website. It’s funny how they teach that the Catholic Church is the devil’s church but if say they are a false church then you are an “anti-mormon” and are attacking them. It’s hard to “go like a lamb to the slaughter” while shooting a six shooter and trying to jump out a window. Joseph had sent word for the nauvoo legion to come rescue him but the order was never given.Joseph did shoot three people, it was reported that one died. Some of the people in the mob ended being shot over the following years. Porter Rockwell was involved in a few of them. We can debate mormon history all day but the core of the matter is this: the bible says that if even an angel comes and gives you another gospel do not follow it. If I had 200 witnesses tell me that L.ron hubbard is alive and got “Dianetics” directly from God and that he can bring down fire from the sky, I still would not follow him. The church I follow cannot fall away, the gates of hell itself cannot prevail against it. 2000 yrs and still rolling

.
THe bishop is informed and if the holder is of a higher priesthood, the stake president is then informed. But all this is at the local level. Salt Lake does not interfere in such cases unless they are ask to interfere. And this can happen if requested by the excommunicant.

Joseph Smith was in prison to answer various charges and polygamy wasn’t one of them. I believe if I remember correctly he was in prison for destroying the printing press that was violently antimormon. The one and only issue was printed to inflame the local surrounding community against the mormons. It was a necessary step to safeguard the mormon community and it did just that. JS went to prison and John Talyor and Hyrum Smith volunteered to accompany them. All knew the danger that they were in.

The mob killed JS, his brother and wounded John Taylor. It was a blood thirsty mob who were riled up by antimormons. Such rhetoric as this: Arise, one and all!!!–Can you stand by, and suffer such infernal devils! were said by a newspaper to rile the mob.

Strange, but the antimormon rhetoric on this site can be seen as a inheritor to the mobs that killed Joseph. Nothing changes. And yet the mormons who have posted on this site have said nothing negative about the catholic church, to my knowledge.

why would mormons be on this site to begin with? So God told joseph to keep his polygamy secret? was he told to lie about it as well? The newspaper he destroyed was run by some of his former followers, including william law, who was the first or second counselor to joseph at one time. This is very simple: you are on a catholic website, catholics are not mormons, hence they don’t believe in joseph smith. Is this what your faith is about? coming here to rehash stuff you read from bushman or FARMS? Is polygamy an eternal doctrine from God as D&Cs says? Why did God change his mind and reverse it in salt lake? I think you are very dishonest by coming here and claiming you aren’t mormon.

You have been asking the wrong question of the wrong people. “Mormon” is a nickname given to LDS people by non-LDS members because of their belief in the Book of Mormon.

zerinus
Ok… but I did go to a LDS site…

So, I’ll ask you:

(Since the question before was ‘wrong’) - Why is the book called ‘the Book of Mormon’, since Joseph Smith was your founder?

If you don’t like the site, you just don’t use it. You don’t keep complaining about it.

If you have questions to ask about the Church, you go to the authorized sources to ask it, who are your bishop and stake president. If you don’t like to go to them, and prefer to go to an unauthorized source, you do so at your own risk; but then you don’t complain about it if you don’t like the treatment you receive, or if your expectaitons are not met.

zerinus
And how does one know that the site isn’t authorized, or who to turn to if no one on the site says they are not authorized, and someone else is a better source?

If I hadn’t already posted on this thread, I would never have seen your post.

Maybe Mr. smith was a sociopath who knew how to charm people…
I remember this song from the 70s: “Smiling faces show no traces… of the evil that lurks within”… If people didn’t charm their followers, they won’t have them. And J. Smith seemed to want followers at virtually any cost.

Yes, theres a good synopisis of Smith. He was a practicer of occultism. The devil’s religion.

The devil takes some of it of the truth and infects it with enough lie to pollute it all. Those caught in Mormonism are truly caught.

So, if you are in a cult, a religion of lies and false beleifs, you should only consult the proponants and supporters of the false beliefs? This is what all the cults tell their members!

You can also consult someone who was a strong adherant of the religion, and gave it up for truth. If giving it up cost them - family, friends, position, you can see it was of no personal benefit to them to become unbelievers of the religion. That woul be trutly educational.

And finding testimony of Mormon insiders who have given up the Mormon faith when they found it was not true, and at great cost to themselves is not hard to find.

You’ve said this many times her on CA Forums. What is the point??

If a Mormon wants to say something negative about the Catholic Church, becaue he sincerely believes something we teach is negative, this would be the very place to bring it up. Honest discussion is welcome.
If you don’t want to being up negative things about catholicism, it does not mean you are setting some kind of standard we shoudl follow. Because we will speak the truth about the Mormon false beliefs, and the truth about its founders, steeped in the Occult.

But the Mormons I’ve seen contributing here just want to promote their own religion. Which is NOT what the Non-Catholic Forum is here for. Its not a place for you to hawk your religion. Its a place to discuss non-Catholic religions. There is a difference!

The Mormon religion is a cult religion. Truths can be found in it. For example, a husband of one wife and one husband and children is a good thing. Since most Mormons practice* that*, though their founders lived crass and sinful lifestyles, it remains a positve truth that most practicing Mormons try to live a life more in line with how God says it should be.

So I don’t see anyone bashing Mormons. Give us one example, please. We are just speaking the truth about the Mormon faith. That is is a false religion, and contrary to the Catholic faith, and it misrepresents key teachings of Jesus. And we can all agree that Joseph Smith is not a hero, in fact he is a bigger sinner than your average Joe.

The point is that Mormons operate on a different standard from Evangelicals and other protestants, who often berate and speak abusively not only of Catholicism but of any other religion they disagree with.

I thought that is what I am doing. Why then do you call that “promoting Mormonism”?

I see. So it is a place for anti-Mormons and Mormon apostates to come and shout abuses at Mormonism (like you are doing right here in this post), but it is not a place for Mormons to defend themselves against such abuse. Fine! That is grate! Who made that rule, by the way? Was it you? Since when did you become the self-appointed board admin?

I could respond to that by calling Catholicism a “cult;” but then I would reduce myself to your level of intelligence competence. I prefer not to get involved in mud-slinging, which is what people like you seem to be fond of doing. I prefer to get involved in real intelligent discussion—something that you are obviously incapable of doing.

I get it. Calling Mormonism a “cult,” a “false religion,” “steeped in the occult,” “crass and sinful lifestyles,” . . . (all the names you have called the Church or its founders in this post alone), without producing a single line of rational argument, is not “Mormon bashing;” but when Mormons merely defend themselves against such false accusations; or when they show similar or worse errors in the Catholic Church; they are “promoting their own religion”. That is the extent of your twisted logic.

Hello Isaac,

The list of 20 truths is accurate. I spent a good year and a lot of time researching and reading, comparing “sides”, though I never new of this website you posted. I started with one question and that one question lead me to many more questions. The apologetic side fell flat many times to me. Often there is not a direct answer to a question, but side tracks that deflect and deny but do not answer.

The exmormons who have gone atheist (I was one of them) will always answer that there is no such thing as truth. What is truth? And for who? I finally asked, is the statement “there is no such thing as truth” a true statement?

Other religions are not mormonism. There is nothing in mormonism that prepares you to understand anything but mormonism. Not one thing. Of course the same can be said of any religion, but it something that I think is important to understand as you start your journey to a new life.

Be careful of terminology, as the same word in mormonism does not have the same meaning in mainstream Christianity. For Catholicism in particular, I found the Catholic dictionary at newadvent.org extremely useful.

Best wishes,
Rebecca

aah but it’s okay for the LDS church to canonize Joseph Smith’s statements that all other churches are false and that their creeds are an ABOMINATION! mormons including zerinus refer to Christians as “apostates” because of their “great apostasy” theory. sure they say Christian churches have good people and do good things but they are all misled. (except for the ones who don’t say mormonism could be true…those are “anti-mormons” and should be shunned) I also question the double standard they use that everyone who comes into their church is a “convert” but everyone who leaves it is an “apostate” and should be ignored as they are incapable of believing any other religion or being sincere in joining another church. these are cultish tactics.

just because a statement is critical of the LDS church doesn’t make it “antimormon propaganda” and labeling it that way isn’t a refutation of fact or logic. in the end the mormon apologist will always (as they must) resort to their testimony that they prayed about it and God told them it was true. many more of us have prayed about it and received the witness of the Holy Spirit that it is false.
