Damascus:
All for Him–

please clarify— Do you know about the SDA?

MAybe I read this part I bolded wrong—

Does she contend they taught the truth about Jesus Christ?

Okay, I better not ask. I think we have to agree that we Love the Bible and leave it there.👍

Hi,
I dont know much about SDA’s(Im not one:eek: ) My friend from church said they taught the truth about the Gospel message of Christ–after that I dont know what they taught:confused: my friend said other then that they had some whacky theology, but she didnt elaborate.

Yes, I am sure she did not elaborate. Have any Scripture reccomendations for this evening AFH?

I always pray prior to reading Scripture(as for the Holy Spirit to be with me), and again after I am done (a thankful prayer)

Any thoughts?

Hi,
I do believe all John says.😃 We just disagree on the Eucharist and of course our definition oof the church is different as well…😦 Other than that Im with you on everything else you mentioned.👍 One of my friend’s grew up in a SDA church and she admits they have some whacky views which is why she left. She did they though that they also taught the truth about Jesus Christ and who he was.
How in the world can any sensible person make the statement
“I agree with everything St. John wrote in his Gospel except the part on the Eucharist?” This is nonsense.

That is like saying you believe everything about Jesus except the level of pain he endured on the Cross. How would you know?

John was the beloved disciple, John was there, John understands the Eucharist fully. without John, our understanding of the Eucharist might very well be a dead thing which is why he was after some reluctance included in the Canon. I say reluctance because John was heavily theological whereas the other three were practical and narrative in style. so to say you use the Bible as your authority and you agree with John on everything except the Eucharist?

The SDA is only an example of the evils inherently associated with personal Bible interpretation outside of the Church.

SDA’s are Bible literalists and sola scriptura. They will interpret the Bible as they see fit. The ironic thing is their favorite Gospels is John. Yet, John, in his day in Emmaus, was the biggest enemy of their forerunners- the Manacheans. Anyone who has studied Manacheanism and Seventh day Adventists know they are one and the same with some Baptist and Calvin thrown in.

My point though was not to talk about SDA’s.

My point to you is that all Protestant religions can find their counterpart in the first 400 years of Christianity when the Gospel writers, John, Mark, Matthew, and Luke and then the Church Fathers were attempting to combat their heresies.

The heresies came from one or two passages in a Gospel or the Old Testament that the interpreters took off and ran with.

It is ludicrous to claim your religion has truth due to Bible knowledge if your religion is one of the heresies combated and refuted by the Apostles and those who wrote the Gospel in the first place as in the case of John.

It does not matter if the name changed. Dualism, manacheanism, and gnosticism and arianism- they are all alive and well and the foundational theology of churches such as the SDA and Calvin’s Churches.

In effect these religions are arguing with the Gospel writers while holding up the Gospel writers as the only truth. Yu cannot hold up something as absolute truth if you are disagreeing with the guy who told it to you in the first place!

Ridiculous but it only occurs due to free lance Bible interpretation.

I am so happy to hear that.👍
Any thoughts?
Let’s see how about Phillipians.👍 It just popped into my head. Maybe God put it there for me to tell you!!😃

Philippians

Chapter 2 verses 19-24.

Timothy. Paul wants to send Timothy, not a book to the Philipians in these verses its clear he wants Timothy there…

Did I say Timothy?😉

Pope John Paul II was extremely concerned at the Catholic losses to Pentecostalism & Fundamentalism, especially in Latin America. Massive percentages of Catholics are poached by these groups. Thank you Lord, for books like ‘Catholicism and Fundamentalism’ but I only ever seen 1 copy of it in England in 4 ½ years: mine!

So, what ought the priests do? From the pulpit maybe give about 12–20 solidly Catholic verses to give basic answers to the fundamental drivel. But they never even preach any verses whatsoever. It would be **so **easy, but they let the opportunity slip.

And off the Catholics go to the Baptist churches! Why, why why?

I have an great 84 page booklet for Catholics defending us from the New Age movement by the:
PONTIFICAL COUNCIL FOR CULTURE
PONTIFICIAL COUNCIL FOR INTERRELIGIOUS DIALOGUE
Jesus Christ the bearer of the Water of Life
A Christian Reflection on the ‘New Age’

Have the Church produced a similar booklet against the Fundamentalist threat?

I’ve seen one or two. And I do rather agree with you - there doesn’t seem to be much sense of urgency. Why, I don’t know.

A suggestion. You’ve noticed a problem. You think something needs to be done about it. Isn’t it possible that you are in a position to do something about it ? Perhaps that’s grossly unrealistic - only you can decide if it is. ##
Are they really only a few authors at Ignatius Press on the case whilst millions are being lost
?
But again I only think the Catholic parishes need to teach most of their members a couple of dozen verses and they’d be inoculated. But they won’t.

I have decided my break my questions up into a number of posts because I’m looking for real answers and don’t want to be accused of making a ‘buckshot’ attack.

There is a great deal you can do 🙂 about these problems - you can pray about them. If there are problems in the Church, doesn’t it follow that God is far more aware of them than any of us could be ? Well then - if you are troubled about this, or about anythiong else in the Church: take your trouble to Christ. Constantly, often, always, unceasingly. Who else could possibly be more intimately concerned for His own Body, than He can ?

People are troubled by all sorts of things - you’ve told us some of yours. Why not look upon these things you’ve mentioned as things that you have been alerted to, so that you can turn them into things to pray about ? But don’t, whatever you do, let yourself be discouraged. ##

I think she was re-stating her point that the Bible is not the only way people came to know Christ and that Timothy was the one sent, in those verses she quoted, so we have oral and written words.
That’s just how I interpretted it, anyways. I think I’m a little sluggish from all that turkey yesterday. 😛

No you are not.
Timothy was needed. The Holy Spirit guiding Paul to guide the Philipians. He could have said, read your scriptures and hold on, I’m sure you will be just fine. Just read and obey and figure out the scriptures without me or one taught by me. (you earlier stated that the OT was there to guide, and therefore it was always a book in some form or another for people to Know Gods words and will) I say phooey. Timothy is only one example since we were speaking of Philipians, and there is more in that book too.
No where in Philipians is it taught that books alone were how the Christians kept clear in their walk…

Does that help?

All kidding aside, you couldnt have been more on the money.

Hi,
I thought that is where you were going but I wanted to make sure. I agree with you mostly. Timothy could have taken some of Paul’s letters for all we know and Im sure he or the church had the OT. I agree that the Gospel message was spread orally because our version of the NT was not put together yet. But that doesnt mean Timothy or anyone else for that matter taught anything that was not later written down in the bible.😃

I always wondered how Paul had access to so much paper and pens;)

It behoves us when reading the Bible to trace Paul’s journey (the road to Damascus comes to mind…

And look at who he was writing to, and why, and what his role was…

His blood was spilled for us and now we are to read these things its the least we can do.

Really? I cant find that in the bible anywhere. In fact, had Paul not been incarcerated he may have never written many things.

😉

Maybe the prison guards gave it to him to shut him up from preaching the gospel.😛 Only kidding of course. Divine intervention Im sure.😃

Yeah me either–the point is we dont know for sure.

I agree with you here. Although, if God wanted it written, it would be written:thumbsup:
