That’s a really cool story about Dark Shadows.

My favorite TV shows:
Welcome Back, Kotter
Cops
America’s Most Wanted
Fawlty Towers
Josie and the Pussycats (the original cartoon series)

Runner-Up:
American Justice (the best true crime show ever with Bill Kurtis, the best true crime narrator ever)
60 Minutes back in the days of Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, Ed Bradley, and Harry Reasoner, with Andy Rooney at the end

These are five of the TV shows my son and I loved watching together when he was growing up:

Star Trek TNG (and the others, but this one the most)

Stargate SG1

The Simpsons

The A-Team

King of the Hill

The West Wing
Last Man on Earth
ER
Doctor Who
The Sopranos

I liked ER. But it went in for two many seasons I feel. I liked the Luka character and kept hoping he’d return to his faith. That episode with the dying bishop was really good.

The West Wing
My husband loved this show and insisted on watching it all the years I was working in DC, including quite a few years in the office next to a guy who is extremely active on the Hill and I would hear half of his conversations and see all his event invitations as we shared a secretary and had open doors. I would always leave the room when my husband wanted to watch that show, because it reminded me too much of work.

This is the best life testimony/story I’ve heard in years. Thank you for sharing.
my dad, who wore blue jeans everyday because he was a factory worker,
Same, except my dad was an electrician.
During my 5th grade year, I became the target for almost everyone in my class. My teacher (public school) was utterly ineffective in controlling the class and allowed a “feeding frenzy”–every day, constantly, my classmates would make fun of my clothing (ugly dresses–I still have little fashion sense), my parents (especially my dad, who wore blue jeans everyday because he was a factory worker, not an office worker), my brother (who had to wear orthopedic shoes), my interests (everything! I was a straight-A student who loved every subject and devoured books about everything from anthropology to zoology!)–EVERYTHING!
Wait, are you me?

The Office (US)
MASH

I don’t have the attention span to watch much tv, but the above two shows I’ll watch any time–they’re like old friends. I did like The Americans and Friends has a lot of quotable material (Pivot!! Danger!! Unagi, you slipped? What were you trying to put it in, her purse? We were on a break!–no excuse, Ross–)

My husband and I got one of our teens to watch MASH with us and she loves it. We only have the first five seasons so I just ordered the rest. Of course, it’s season six that is back ordered 😂

Edit: the post didn’t like my asterisks in MASH 😔

MASH had one of the greatest Catholic TV characters of all time in Father Mulcahy.
Ironically, he was played (very well) by a Methodist actor. I guess that’s why they call it “Acting”.

As a boy
Monkees
Lost In Space
Johnny Quest
Flipper
Three Stooges (OK it’s not a series but I loved it, especially Curly episodes).

As a teenager
Sanford and Son (watched it with my dad)
Welcome Back Kotter (Juan Epstein was my favorite).
Happy Days (until Fonzie jumps the shark).
Kojak (who loves ya, baby?)
Love Boat (soon we’ll be making another run)

As an Adult
First 48
Quantum Leap
NCIS Los Angeles
Father Brown
Rick Steves Travel Shows to Europe on PBS

I also like to watch reruns of all the above, plus Star Trek TOS, MASH, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Andy Griffith Show, etc.

*Ok, so I’m a little boring. So what? 😀

From my ‘yoof’:
MAS*H
Dangermouse
The Beiderbecke Affair (and sequels)
Press Gang
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

More recently:

Supernatural - 15 series cant be wrong!

Game of Thrones - Even just for The Red Wedding and what happened to Joffrey

Eastenders - chewing gum for my brain

The Walking Dead - especially when everyone was Neegan

Breaking Bad - one of the few series to live up to the hype

  • Northern Exposure
  • The Dick Van Dyke Show
  • Breaking Bad
  • The Twilight Zone
  • Arrested Development

Great story, @Peeps. I was in a similar situation in my 5th grade. Very interesting post, practically riveting.

I did not catch Kojak the first time around, but in my 19-20 years, I discovered it on every night at 11pm and it became my favorite show at that time. It was different as far as cop shows went.

Loved Northern Exposure The first episode was the best. I loved the character that Adam Arkin played. That was a great series. Quirky without being out there.

Slight modification

5 series that I loved when they were on first run, but didn’t age well (for me at least):

1 - Time Tunnel
2 - That Girl
3 - The Invaders
4 - Petticoat Junction
5 - Wings

Petticoat Junction
While this was a completely silly show, I have a soft spot for it because everything about it - the train, the Shady Rest - looks exactly like my grandma’s house and area in Nebraska when I was a kid. (Except that as an adult I note the landscape is not flat like Nebraska and those trees definitely look more like California.) My granddad was a train engineer and my dad was a train fireman. My aunt had several teenage daughters who I remember being around during our visits out there when I was a kid, and they were sort of like updated versions of the girls. One was even named “Bobbie Jo” (I suspect she was actually named after my father).

My dad always chuckled at the part about “Uncle Joe, he’s a movin’ kinda slow at the Junction” and would sing that around the house when the cat was slow getting out of his way or something. To this day I use the phrase “You’re movin’ kinda slow at the junction.”

That’s pretty cool. I did and do like the hotel and the train, and I don’t dislike the show now, it just isn’t at the same level for me personally as when it was new.

Indeed! He never quite understood that he was much cooler when he was being Avon. He had the best clothes next to Servalan too!
