5 favorite TV series

  1. The World Over w/ Raymond Arroyo (not technically a series but TWO is awesome).
  2. Fr. Timothy Gallagher’s series on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
  3. Life is Worth Living with Bishop Sheen.
  4. The Waltons.
  5. The Roosevelts (PBS - Ken Burns).

One of my great-grands was a maid in England before she got married to great-grandpa who was a policeman.
I think my favorite Upstairs/ Downstairs character was the cook. She had the most skills of anybody there.
I was annoyed when they killed off the middle-class wife of the rich lout.
One of my cats reminds me very much of the scheming chauffeur.

I’m adding a few I can’t believe I overlooked:

Dragnet with Jack Webb. Without it there’s no “police procedural,” ever. It was the first show to accurately depict police work as largely routine with few shootouts and car chases. It was also the first TV show with a dedicated Christmas special. When he died, Jack Webb was given a funeral with full LAPD honors and Joe Friday’s badge number was permanently retired by the LAPD.

And speaking of shows set in LA…

The White Shadow with Kenny Howard. Dealt with subjects like teen pregnancy (no abortion themes!), racism, homosexuality, drug use and all sorts of serious themes when no shows in the 70s would touch them - and had fun basketball scenes too.

MASH had one of the greatest Catholic TV characters of all time in Father Mulcahy.
Ironically, he was played (very well) by a Methodist actor
I also thought Father Mulcahy was portrayed well and favorably by actor William Christopher, although I thought his character started out as a little bit too wimpy in the beginning for my liking.

However, as the series progressed, I thought the writers allowed Fr Mulcahy to take on more meaningful roles, like when he goes to battalion aid with Radar to retrieve a wounded man and saves the man’s life with his “Tom Mix” pocket knife who had an obstructed airway along with other meaningful acts of bravery, kindness, and Christian compassion.

Even though he was a fictional character, the portrayal of Fr Mulcahy reinforced a mostly favorable view I had of Catholicism.

The Honeymooners
The Twilight Zone
Northern Exposure
My Life and Times
Seinfeld
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Alfred Hitchcock Presents

Cosmos (sagan version) is fabulous - far superior to the reboot, which I found anti-religious.

My only “issue” with sagan is that he sounds so calm as he talks about billions of galaxies that he always puts me to sleep. I love all the episodes but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one start to finish: they make me doze off.

So they would not have allowed the Irish man get married to the upstairs lady? Even to avoid a scandal? I was not a 100% fan either. The best character was the grandmother 😂.
