Had a talk with my supervisor this morning because I was concerned about meeting one of my “critical elements” on my performance plan. I actually was lying in bed thinking about it a couple nights ago.

I think she steered me in the right direction.

Hate when I have things on my mind when I should be sleeping. Hope it is the right direction

I find praying the rosary mentally sometimes helps with falling asleep. Even if I don’t fall asleep, I have done something worthy and productive.

Best wishes on a good night’s sleep.

This is normally a slow thread, but open to everyone. The first post provides a little perspective on the thread going back to the old CAF.

Wow 9 days have passed. Children are going back to school here. What happened to three months vacation? Does having a shortened vacation really improve learning? Once most only went to 8th grade and it seems to me that they knew more than those graduating college.

From my memories as a kid, being out of school all summer was great. From many parents perspective today, with both parents working, if the kids are out of school they have to make other arrangements for them. We get to have several of our grandkids spend a week or two with us each summer, plus some family vacation time. Fortunately we have that luxury. I hope that our grandkids have as great memories of their childhood as I do of mine.

I raced a 5K on Friday evening. Called the “Rush Run” in honor of a young lady named Sydney Rush who was in 4-H; she sadly died in a car crash a few years ago.

As far as I can tell I was the only ♿ user. I finished in 36:08, my best time since the Charleston Distance Run 5K in 2013 when I recorded a 36:00.1.

Kudos! I worked on getting some exercise this weekend myself so I appreciate the effort it takes to do that.

Two things have happened to school schedules since I started teaching in 1996.
  1. School starts in August but ends before Memorial Day. This year our kids got 11 weeks and 4 days. Teachers got 10 weeks. :+1:t4:
  2. Districts now give students a whole week off at Thanksgiving. Some even have an additional few days to a week off as a “fall break” in October.
Mostly, kids are still in school the same number of days, but the days are spread out a bit differently.

Regarding kids knowing more in the past… rubbish. There was far less to know, and far less need to know as much “book learning.” My grandmother only made it through sixth or eighth grade, and she was an extraordinary woman. But there’s no way her education would have allowed her to keep up in fields that are changing exponentially as our current knowledge base expands.

Knowing how to live life well should not be (yet another thing) placed on the backs of teachers. Families should be responsible for that. And my grandmother came from a line of strong and faithful people.

The old thread was a lot of fun, and for a year @christofirst posted daily, in poem form no less, about a Saint of the day. Great stuff, the daily poems definitely helped me to grow in my faith.
I can’t believe I missed that.

Do you suppose he’ll come 'round these parts and enlighten us all again?

A girl can dream… 😇

@christofirst is still active here on the site and on this very thread. As far as his Saint of the Day posts, he did it for a solid year on the old thread and they were awesome. They were something I looked forward to every day and they were educational and inspirational.

I can’t believe I missed that.
Searching deep in the archives , I found the poem I posted for the saint of today, August 17. I started posting the saint poems in 2015, and I numbered them as I went along. I think you’ll see that the fond memory of my little rhymes far surpasses their actual quality 😒

Saint Hyacinth was a Polish man,
And he was a Dominican,
Through Northern Europe he did preach,
Strong was his faith, long was his reach,
Remembered, too, for miracles great,
And he’s the saint of post 68.
