AOL article: Los Angeles diocese priest abuse

Sadly, it’s just to be expected. I have Yahoo e-mail & links to select headlines pop up when I open my mail, and of course one is “L.A. archdiocese admits it didn’t shield kids from abuse”. I didn’t bother to read it because it was probably more of what you mentioned in your post. I’m afraid that is is the way it will always be from now on, long after everyone involved in the present scandal is dead & buried.

The records show just like in Boston the Bishops of Los Angeles covered up and protected pedophile priests. One priest also like in Boston was allowed to commit his abominations over a 30 year span. In a new spin Cardinal Mahoney is claiming it was the parents fault these men were not reported to the Police.

What’s really disgusting and awful is that the abuse happened. The response should be nothing less than outrage.
 
The responses dont bug me at all… they are justified in light of whats going on. More outrage should be directed at the Church instead of those who make terrible comments.
 
This was the lead story on CBS news last night, not just an AOL blurb. Hold on, we’re in for a rough ride (again).

Um, I’m aware of that. A lot of the statements made were awful comments about Catholics and the Catholic religion itself, not the abuse. That’s what bothered me. If you read them, they are quite unnecessary and typically (and ignorantly) anti-catholic. Their comments about the abuse are pretty much justified.

If the victim is a teenager it is not pedophilia. The media still won’t print the true nature of the crime to the public - that is homosexuality.

  • Geoffrey Cornish, a well-respected Solana Beach, California therapist was sentenced to 23 years in prison in September, 2001 for sexually molesting boys who came to him for therapy. Cornish, who is HIV-positive, was also a coach for the Torrey Pines High School surf team. Cornish told police he had been molested himself by a Boy Scout leader for three years when he was living in England.

Who gives a rip? We are talking about a minor child here. The focus should be on that fact. I would guess the molested children don’t care what the sexual preference of the priest is.

It’s called ephebophilia and it accounts for the majority of sexual abuse cases. Heterosexual AND homosexual men AND women perpetrate these crimes.

I live in Los Angeles. Mahony leaves a lot to be desired. There is no excuse for this cover up. He should have turned over the records years ago when the D.A. asked for them. That the abuse happened at all is bad, that is was covered up is worse, and that the records of the cover up are not freely given to the D.A. is inexcusable. :mad:

My personal opinion is that Man-Boy Love is wrong and I don’t understand why a Catholic priest would be supporting this? It seems odd that the local bishop would be supportive of such a priest?

The focus is on the minor child. But the facts should be reported not covered up. That in itself is a crime.

I hear a lot of complaints about the injustice of being forced to pay for others crimes.Usualy they are talking about the priest molesters and their dead bishops.
In Los Angeles you have proof against Cardinal Mahony. He won’t be punished at all.
The people that complain about the injustice of the payments to the victims are missing something.
Cardinal Mahony has been paying with your money High priced lawyers for 3 years to keep what he did in the scandal secret.]
When the payments are made to the victims again it will not be any of his money.It will be insurance companies and the archdiocese, which is you.

Don’t be in too much of a hurry to protect the Church. That’s one of the causes of all the trouble. I personally know of someone who was abused by a priest. When he went to that priest’s superior the superior warned him to keep it secret to avoid damaging the reputation of the Church. the superior was subsequently made a bishop. A true faith sees the essential goodnes of the Church but is not afraid to speak out when it’s leaders are wrong.
 
When Nixon was scandalized by the Watergate scandal, no one talked about “Evil America!”
when Hitler committed attrocities, no one called for the destruction of the German people… the guilty were punished.
but when the Catholic Church has some evil Priests and bad Bishops who made rotten decisions, why do people call the church herself evil? The Church is ME. the church is everyone here… the priests who were innocent and did not do evil, the good priests around the world… they have no fault.
I agree that the priests who were wicked need to be locked away for life, the bishops who shuffled them should be kicked in the behind for bad judgement. But all the posters on the California website and everywhere else who talk trash about the church… they’re just jumping on the bash religion bandwagon. they have no credibility.

And as a sidenote… read the names of the really Catholic bashing posters… you’ll see wiccan and occult names all over - "reddragon’ - “ravenwolf” “moonchild” - this should give some clues as to the vile they spew.
