Jeffreedy,
you’re a better person than I am. I hope I would have your Christlike compassion.
The worst punishment I can think of for sins is to realize how evil they were, what Christ went through to atone for them, and how ingrained they are in our nature. I feel really rotten for some of my past sins, even though I’ve gone through Reconciliation.
Therefore I think locking up people like this and throwing away the key is appropriate – hoping that they’ll come by God’s grace to realize what they’ve done and feel the burning remorse that they ought to feel.
That is the best revenge I can think of.
Five minutes alone with one of them would only reduce me to their level.

My flesh wants to say “give me 10 minutes” with him. I’ve always envisioned something involving sulfuric acid and an eyedropper.

Good thing I’m starting to have control over my anger.

I don’t think there is such a thing as “appropriate punishment” administered by human beings. Vengeance is the Lord’s, and as Jeff has said we should pray that this man is shown mercy and repents.

Behavioral control is adminstered by human beings, and to that end I voted for life in prison. The death penalty would not bother me, though, too much. Neither is intended to punish the person, for nothing we can do to hurt that man will do any good. Imprisonment or death penalty should be used to protect ourselves from another likely attack, and to deter others. I don’t believe in locking people because we’re mad at them, but because we’re afraid of them.

I am personally all for the reestablishment of a isolated penal colony for prisoners sentenced to life without parole. It would be a situation where you can one get oonly the colony, there is no way to get out. It would be unguarded and unsupervised. Food and supplies would be air-dropped twice a month. These people have chosen to live their lives like animals, I say they get to finish them like animals.

I like that idea. Last I heard Alcatraz was still available.

Hmmm… isn’t this how Australia got populated? I heard it from an unreliable source, but it was an interesting story.

So is most of Greenland.

Regardless of our feelings of anger, desire for vengence…we are followers of Christ and need to obey the Church regarding its teachings as Jesus obeyed the Father. Accepting this teaching on death penalty was hard for me; however, I began by accepting that the Church was trustworthy. I had to do some serious reading, reflection and communication about this issue before I came to appreciate the Church’s teaching. Particularly important was my knowing the horror of the butchery going on with uncountable abortions day after day!

Defend life! Respect and defend the Church!

Love & peace in Christ,
Bob

Hello Trailblazer:love: I didn’t vote for killing him,I just want my 5 minutes;)

I have thought about this topic lately and I see a difference in what punishment is called for depending on what part of the world you are in. In this poll we are assuming that the incarceration is taking place in the US. Now if this had happened in ______(pick a third world country that is going through huge turmoil, like the Sudan) I might feel that the death penalty would be warranted to protect society as the expectation of being able to guarantee LIFE in prison is unrealistic. Hasn’t that been the teaching of the Church for centuries? That lawful authority has the right to impose the death penalty to protect society. Also there is something in the CCC that authority has a duty to affirm life by making sure the punishment fits the crime. I am not saying that very well but I know it is in there.
Now I have a question: People get really worked up over the death penalty which is actually enforced in the US infrequently. But we have 1000’s of abortions a day. Why do no-death penalty proponents get so worked up?I have seen prolife groups fall apart because the anti abortion group and the no death penalty group could not focus on an issue. Would like to hear some insight.

Locking him up for life would keep us and our children safe, yet it also gives him the chance to repent of his sin.

But it won’t bring the victim back. AT ALL. Also, to quote one of the members here, two wrongs don’t make a right.
How is the death penalty wrong? The church never condemmed it. Also, the victim would be on death row, and I believe that if a victim reforms when they are on death row, they should be taken off this, but I doubt this type of criminal would make a change of heart.

A confessed repeat offender should be put to death. This is for his own well being as well as the safety of society. In prison he will be subjected to torture from the other inmates. In this case 100% guilty is enough to seek death, justice is due the family as well as society. God will have the final judgement.

no, no. i’m the chief of sinners. that’s why i emphathize with this man who has done this horrible thing.

it’s beyond our (at least MY) ability to comprehend the horror that the poor girl went through.

but i would say it’s arguable that the horror of BEING the man who DID it might be worse.

the only reason i begin to have anything like the compassion that Christ has (and mine is far removed, of course), is because i’ve needed that compassion so many times for MY sins and shortcomings that the least i can do in return is show that love and forgiveness to someone else - especially someone who hasn’t even wronged ME.

Don’t you mean the world?

Would you apply to those who are repeatedly convicted but have not confessed? Otherwise might that not eliminate confession and thereby tie up the courts more with pointless cases and actually increase the chances these people will walk to do their crime again?

Alan

I voted death. The death penalty may or may not serve as a deterrent to others, but it absolutely prevents the perpetrator from ever committing a crime again.

I am deeply saddened at the number of “Catholics” who still believe in the death penalty, even though the Church says it is wrong when other options are available. Do all of you believe in abortion and euthanasia as well?

This emphasizes the desperate need of adult formation in our Church. Some of you could begin by buying and meditating on the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and JPII’s writings and encyclicals, just as “The Gospel of Life.” For those of you who refuse to accept Catholic teaching, perhaps you need to look into joining one of the Protestant denominations whose views more closely match your own.

Love & peace in Christ,
Bob

I voted for life without parole. For those that voted for solitary as a means of increasing his suffering, that would actually be a protection for him.
Child rapist are as good as dead when they go to prison. Even convicted criminals hasve standards I guess.

Since the question specifically stated confessed it took the burden of all the hard thinking away from my decision. I answered the question as posed to us. I took nothing such as what you bring up into consideration.

I chose the 5 minutes. Then I would go ahead and give him the death penalty and make sure it is enforced. Yes we are all sinners. NO - I do NOT think we are all capable of committing such a terrible crime (crimes). WHATEVER the “reason” is that the crime was committed (ie- drugs, mental illness, miserable childhood etc) that person CHOSE to commit the crime. Yes, it is very sad all around- no doubt about that. Yes - there may be circumstances that “caused” such behavior. But the bottom line is NO - WE MUST NOT ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN AGAIN - period. Yes - there is still room for forgivenes and salvation from God, but that does not preclude the fact that we must all suffer the consequences of our actions. I am plain tired of these monsters (YES - MONSTERS) getting a slap on the wrist and three meals a day, health care and a bed to sleep in as a “consequence” of their crimes. My family cannot afford health insurance (as many many others also cannot) - how is it that people in prison get health care?? Go figure (I know - that was a bit off topic…)
