“We’re not trying to impose our teachings on anybody.we’re simply saying, don’t impose your teaching upon us and make us as a church do what we find unconscionable to do.”
—Cardinal Dolan

Cardinal Dolan is right. The Church has done nothing to bring about this controversy. Nothing. Church institutions are operating this year the same as they did last year and the year before and ten years before that.

Before passing the health care bill, the administration promised, “If you like your current health insurance, you can keep it!”

That was the promise.

Then, out of the blue, HHS passes a mandate telling all Catholic institutions: No, you can’t keep your current insurance. No. Now you’ve got to do it our way. Now, you’ve got to cover oral contraception, sterilization, and abortion inducing drugs, all without cost or copay. You can’t keep your current insurance.

The Church didn’t pick a fight with the administration. The administration stepped into the middle of the Church’s business, telling it, “You will just have to violate your conscience. It’s our way or the highway.”

Now, Church institutions have been given by this administration this choice:

Comply with an unconstitutional mandate, violate your conscience, and cease to be Catholic.
OR

Drop all health insurance coverage if you insist, but you will have to pay heavy fines for doing that. It might drive you out of business.

OR

Just go out of business right away.

But Msgr. Kevin T. McMahon says, We Must Not Comply.

Well said.

Well now, this is just rich…

The Office of International Religious Freedom has the mission of promoting religious freedom as a core objective of U.S. foreign policy. The office is headed by Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Suzan Johnson Cook. We monitor religious persecution and discrimination worldwide, recommend and implement policies in respective regions or countries, and develop programs to promote religious freedom.
Given the U.S. commitment to religious freedom, and to the international covenants that guarantee it as the inalienable right of every human being, the United States seeks to:
Promote freedom of religion and conscience throughout the world as a fundamental human right and as a source of stability for all countries
Assist emerging democracies in implementing freedom of religion and conscience
Assist religious and human rights NGOs in promoting religious freedom
Identify and denounce regimes that are severe persecutors on the basis of religious belief.

 I knew that was a lie when I first heard it.

I hope Catholic institutions stay in business, keep their current plans, and do not comply. Let’s see the administration try to penalize the Church. They will be shooting themselves in the foot.

One thing that has struck me about Obama is that he has absolutely no problem in lying. He’s constantly been caught on film saying something absolutely outrageous and then when called on it basically ignores the question.

Along with promising you could keep your insurance, he also promised you could keep your doctor. Really? I thought slavery was against the law. Basically he promised that doctors would be forced to treat patients without any hope of reimbursement or with substandard reimbursement. Supposedly the goal of health insurance reform was to decrease cost and increase access. His plan has done the opposite in both cases.

I would also like to see the Obama administration start fining Catholic hospitals and social services organizations. That would sure be a hit with the American public and just think what Cardinal Dolan would have to say. I can only imagine Obama wandering the halls of the White House quoting Henry VIII…will anyone RID me of this pesky Priest!?

“**Only (5) out of every (70) baptized Catholics are faithful to Church teaching. ** Less than 10%…If this doesn’t rise to the level of a crisis, then nothing can be considered a crisis. No wonder Obama felt comfortable in calling for this mandate!”

WHERE is the voice of truth to be heard so that conversion may occur and the Church can stand united? Do the bishops think we will win this battle in the courts on constitutional grounds alone?

I think we are seeing more homilies geared towards contraception and abortion since the HHS mandate has come down. However, I think that it is going to be a long road ahead. Pope Benedict has been quoted as saying that in order for the Church to become stronger, she may have to get smaller and then rebuild.

This blog post from a priest talks about the things which have happened to our Faith in the last generation or two, and where we are headed now.

I just read this a moment ago. I have to admit, that this one angers me, significantly. How any Catholic could consider voting for this president is beyond me. Furthermore, I have been relatively consistent in defending Jesuits on this forum as have many others. The Holy Father and every last one of the Bishops in the United States have said that this is an attack on our religious liberty. How is it that America magazine which is run by the Jesuits disagrees? How arrogant is it to think that you know the faith better than our entire conference of Bishops speaking in union with the Holy See?

Jason agree on all points. When Obama was running I was a relatively new Catholic. But having read about his MILITANT PRO ABORTION (this man is NOT PRO-CHOICE PEOPLE) stance and reading what the Bishops stated about being complicit with evil, I truly could not believe any Catholic could vote for him when there was a pro-life candidate in the race. I’d like to think this was a phenomenon of the CINOs but sadly in my own parish, some of our most faithful, lifelong members proudly sported Obama stickers and spoke openly about their excitement in being able to vote for an “exciting and inspiring candidate.”

I would just LOVE to hear from a faithful Catholic who voted for Obama last time (hopefully their ONLY time) why given his abortion stance alone, they still voted for him.

From my unscientific observation, these were invariably women  and from a strong Democrat demographic (teachers, union members). I thought he’d be a disaster from multple aspects but thought the abortion stance made voting for him a non-starter.

I pray every day we will get rid of him. I think he has supported and even inspired so many evil acts that I fear for our country even if we do vote “right” in November. If he wins…

I have a friend who considers himself a faithful Catholic and voted for him last time. My friend is like a lot of those who vote for candidates who are for abortion; they think about abortion more in the abstract, and think that other social issues altogether outweigh that one issue.

Having said that, not based on abortion but based on things like this mandate, he won’t vote for Obama again. I hope Obama is also losing others, but polls don’t give me a lot of hope.

If you watched the presidential news conference this afternoon you would have gotten the impression that the religious freedom issue is resolved.

Not a single question.

sheesh.

Did the Obama admin tell the press not to ask any questions about the HHS mandate?

Could you quote? I can’t youtube at work.
Basically, Michael Voris takes some numbers provided by the Archdiocese of Detroit along with some of their own conjecture and makes the case that a very small percentage of those claiming to be Catholic are actually practicing and faithful Catholics. Thus, the numbers widely reported are skewed.

I’m not sure about his numbers, but what I am fairly confident in is the overall premise which is sad, but likely accurate.
