Archbishop Warns Obama: You’ll Cause 'Conflict Between Church and State of Enormous Proportions’

Removing restrictions does not universally cause growth, nor does imposing restrictions universally hamper growth. look up “missing markets” on wikipedia to see some examples of a natural (in regulated) market causing an economic inefficiency and hindering growth.

the regulation of markets needs to be applied on a pragmatic, case-by-case basis, as all markets are not the same; in fact most have their own peculiarities. It is dangerous to just cateorically obey an ideological maxim like “less regulation=more growth.”

Secondly, you didn’t explain how lowering taxes in a time of war would and with both a budget deficit and gigantic debt was financially sound.

Lower taxes may increase investment, but investment alone does not drive an economy. Consumption is needed as well. No matter how much investment capital is available, a company won’t produce more goods or provide more jobs if there aren’t people willing to pay for them. Or if they do produce more goods and supply far outstrips demand, what you have is a crisis of over-production. Prices fall, but then so do wages, and deflations sets in. Much as so many fear inflation today, deflation is probably worse. It was deflation that came with the great depression, and deflation is far more difficult to fix than inflation.

Followers of supply side economics persistentlyforget that supply is only one half of the equation. Same can be said of course of people who obsess over the demand side.

The economy does not necessarily grow jobs. Even a growing economy can decrease the number of jobs. In this day and age, the fastest growing sectors of the economy are the high tech sectors that *decrease *the amound of labor necessary. Meanwhile, labor-intensive industries, like manufacturing ones, are declining fast. So even as the economy ‘grows’ financiallly, unemployment can still increase. Take note of the Russian Revolution: it occurred during a time of rapid economic development and growth and industrialization. So why were so many people so doscontented and poor? Because that growth also destroyed a great many jobs that had become obsolete.

Also, the assumption that lowered taxes for people who already have money to spare will even increase investment is a false assumption. In all likelihood most of the money they would save from lower taxes would end up being invested in foreign corporations with higher profit potential than their American competitors. So tax cuts may end up doing little more than reducing tax revenue, depending on how much or how little meven ends up invested in American businesses.
I didn’t say that it ALWAYS does in every case. A growing economy generally increases jobs, all things being equal. Obama wants to grow jobs first. He has it backwards.

That’s because people who disagree with us don’t read the links. They want to believe whatever it is that agrees with their pre-ordained views.

I see it in my daughter. She voted for Obama when she was a senior in high school (they shouldn’t let kids that young vote). She is now a junior in university and studying economics. It’s painful for her to change her political ideology. 🙂 I wonder if she’ll vote for Obama next time around!
I would support moving the voting age to 30!

Hi, Qui est ce,

Speaking of belief systems… I’d like to think that this is all somehow related to this thread we are on … 😃

Take heart, while Juniors in University are nearly a hopeless lot … Seniors have the wolf at the door with graduation and actually going out and working with that newly minted diploma. She will well into her Senior year - and that, maybe more than anything else, may cause her to see the error or her first Presidental choice.

God bless

I talked to her last night. She’s not voting. She can’t vote for Obama, but she can’t vote Republican yet. I don’t blame her.

Working with the Social Security Administration is a nightmare. IMO SS shouldnt be taxed anyway-you have already paid taxes on the money you contributed!
Good evening, estesbob,

Thank you, sir, that’s my sentiment exactly. However, that being said, the government does tax Social Security. Consequently, I must then either turn that to my advantage at best by striving for an abundant refund the next year, or in the worst case scenario protect myself from paying gross taxes at one time next year, by having them withheld monthly.

And, since Medicare jerked me out of that withholding for most of this year by taking my money for taxes and applying it to Medicare D which I didn’t even ask for, which reset my tax withholding to zero, I’m upset with them.

God loves you,
Don

Hi, DonSnow,

Hmmmmmm … I am wondering if the Archbishop would address that concern in his NEXT letter to President Obama.

As it stands now, we do not seem to be making any more progress on the current letter to the President - at least on this thread.

Do we want to continue or do we want to just close it?

God bless

Hi, tqualey,

My apologies, I wandered. My fault.

Is there anything to discuss about trafficking in young people or immigrants seeking sanctuary in America?

God loves you,
Don

Hi, DonSnow,

No. These are clearly illegal and immoral acts.

I thought we were discussing Obama’s conscious acts to essentially promote the murder of the unborn, use their stem cells for whatever (e.g., Pepsi using these cells to develop flavor enhancers for their food products), promoting euthansia while supressing individual consciences of health care workers.

I would be interested in knowing if anyone’s local bishop has actually done anything with this letter. I have yet to hear anything from the pulpit - and I think this is very sad.

God bless

Good afternoon, tqualey,

Yes, I see where these are definite sub topics from the OP. Shall we discuss them one at a time, or in one post with brief comments on each topic, to stay within the 6,000 character limit?

God loves you,
Don

Hi, DonSnow,

Actually, I would be interested if anyone has heard anything from their local priest on anything concerning this letter from the Archbishop to the President. Since my view is limited to one parish - I just do not know what is happening at the ‘grass roots level’ in this matter.

God bless

Bishop Lori, in his address to the Congressional hearing panel on The State of Religious Freedom in the U.S. last week mentioned:
  • contraceptives and sterilisation being mandated in private health insurance, even Catholic ones.
  • USCCB’s Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) beng barred from the human trafficking program as they do not provide abortion to the victims.
  • The Obama administration is attacking the ministerial exception, the right of religious groups to choose their ministers without government interference.
  • The Obama administration attacking DOMA, and “claiming that supporters of the law could only have been motivated by bias and prejudice. If the label of “bigot” sticks to our Church and many other churches-especially in court, under the Constitution-because of their teaching on marriage, the result will be church-state conflicts for many years to come.”

Good morning, tqualey,

I’ve missed Church a couple of weeks, so, I couldn’t say. I’ve had clinging cold symptoms and stayed out of Church, so as not to make people around me nervous with my coughing and sniffling.

God loves you,
Don

Hi, Don,

Respiratory problems that last a couple of weeks - and are not responding well to isolation from others - probably need to be treated by a physician. Things can go from bad to worse - especially as we are having such really bad weather all over I am guessing that those Canadian neighbors of our could not keep the door to Old Man Winter shut any longer!! :D:D

Now, as I recall, only one person has mentioned anything about the Archbishop’s letter to the President. This is really not my idea of getting the word out.

God bless

Good afternoon, tqualey,

You’re right, thank you.

Since I haven’t had any fever all this time, I’ve held off going to my doctor, with the VA, because I have an appointment with another provider at the local VA clinic tomorrow morning. After I make that appointment, I plan to go to the smaller clinic inside where my doctor’s located and see if I can get both a flu shot and see my doctor on what we call a “walk-in”. I’m sure I can get the flu shot, but may have to make an appointment to see my doctor. But, it won’t hurt to try.

No, just one person in a local parish mentioning the Bishop’s letter is not getting the word out. We have a Catholic newspaper, The North Texas Catholic, in this region. I’ve checked both the October and November issues. And there’s no articles about ArchBishop Dolan’s letter to the president in either issue. The paper carries not only local, but also national and international Catholic news. I wonder why it didn’t carry an article about his letter? I have no idea of why not.

God loves you,
Don

Hi, DonSnow,

For what it is worth … the weather is nice here in Houston … but, we are still in the midst of a terrible drought.

Now, one last suggestion: please see your doctor BEFORE getting a flu shot. With the potential for complication related to an existing respiratory problem - it would be prudent to have the doc look you over first and then disucss getting a flu shot at this time. Nothing is ever simple … and developing a poltentially avoidable health related complications as we approach winter is something to consider.

On to the topic … 🙂 I have no idea where these bishops are going with supporting Archbishop Dolan - but, maybe they have some kind of ‘osmosis’ factor that they are trying to get to work!

According to this source, almost 40% of Catholics approve of Obama’s policies. Check this out:

Family Research Council Action president Tony Perkins says he doesn’t think the new director will have any luck reaching pro-life advocates who are upset that Obama has repeatedly promoted abortion, forced them to pay for abortions or funding pro-abortion organizations in multiple circumstances, or cozied up with leaders of pro-abortion groups like NARAL and Planned Parenthood.
“A Barna Research Survey conducted earlier this year shows that President Obama has a 6 percent favorability rating among evangelicals. A more recent Quinnipiac survey reports that the President has a 39 percent favorability rating among Catholics,” Perkins said. “The DNC and the President may hope this effort will reverse his falling poll numbers among religious voters, but I predict that as the fruit of this administration is examined by Christian voters, the President will find little support.”
“The President’s policies that promote abortion also undermine family formation,” Perkins added.
“Abortion does this by contributing to infant mortality, victimizing women, and encouraging the abdication of responsibility by men. He has issued executive orders to fund foreign abortion organizations and use tax dollars for experimentation on human embryos. He is even opposed to commonsense parental notification laws. These laws reaffirm the unique role that a mother and father have in the life of a child,” the FRC leader continued. lifenews.com/2011/10/20/pro-lifers-obama-religious-outreach-cant-hide-abortion-record/
This tells me that the bishops need to do something.
