If the contact tracing is working, why put the city under curfew? Is it a means to close bars etal?
Sydney isn’t under curfew. Sydney is open with restrictions. Restaurants, gyms and religious service are capped with distancing rules, schools are open but get shut down if they have a single case and large outdoor gatherings are banned.
Melbourne is the city under a very strict curfew where only the very essential businesses allowed to operate.

[T]he report by Bret Walker SC made few recommendations saying health authorities had recognised mistakes made, and would “do things differently if they had their time again”.

The Premier said all of the recommendations would be implemented and that the NSW Government would work with federal agencies involved to strengthen protocols.

Ms Berejiklian said she wanted to stress that Mr Walker’s report found there weren’t systemic issues

Contract tracing doesnt stop the virus. How can it?

Yesterday we had 284 new cases in Vic and 25 deaths. This is a serious issue.

Curfew isnt the issue, we are in lockdown, either stage 3 or 4 with curfew at night and a state of emergency/disaster in Victoria.

Lockdown closes businesses, not curfew. Those that were able to stay open, are being very careful about if they stay open.

Police can, if they choose, investigate and book people breaking covid rules

There is an inquiry into the security guard issue, they were not trained properly.
Noone took the threat of covid seriously and authorities employed people more concerned with keeping the quarantinees happy. The quarantenees were threatening all sorts of self harm and other things if they did not get what they wanted.

But it helps warn potential infected individuals they need to self-isolate fast. And if they are indeed infected, they wouldn’t have spread it as much. If they had no warning they could be infected, they would have continued spreading it. So in many ways, Sydney created lockdowns for suspected infected individuals rather than everyone in Sydney.
What happened in Melbourne was they didn’t know where the sources were until it was too late. And then everyone had to self-isolate through a lockdown.

Its way too slow, it needs a lot of work to be effective. It really is more of a crime whodunit, where is groundzero for an outbreak.

Melbourne started with a total lockdown of some housing towers. That lockdown did not work out too well because of the ineffectiveness of contact tracing. We even have an app for phones that is meant to be very fast in contact tracing, big waste of millions.

Melbourne well knew there was a huge issue with those towers, but extended tracing did not show up hotspots until too late.

Another big issue has been casual workers working different aged care centres daily

Today 222 cases and 17 deaths in Victoria, but there is a 17% drop in people coming forward to be tested with this figure.

Tassie is self isolating from the rest of us.

Voting is compulsory in Aus for all level elections. We can vote in person or by mail. We have no issue voting by mail and with the vast expanse of distance, it is the only option for some.

We did not blow it!!! . . .
The first models predicted 2 million + deaths. The second model predicted
200,000 + and right now we are at 20,000 +. I would say we are doing really well.
And months later, are we doing really well?

BACK TO THE OP.
How is it doing it? Simple answer: Australia is not the United States.

BUT BUT BUT they have lost some control like other countries:
The second wave is now worst then the first wave.

HOW ARE THEY DOING IT?

So if you are already in lockdown, why do you a curfew on top of it?

I’m not being critical, just don’t ‘get’ how a curfew adds on as a preventative.

Oki then it is about “ nightlife” ( as gatherings at homes )more than anything else as it sounds. Reinforcing .
Thank you!

Just glad I live in a state where Covid is not so much an apparent problem. Just over 1000 deaths state wide. We do have a safer at home order though. It ends on the 31st. We wait and see if the Governor extends it or not. Major factor will be due to schools started opening yesterday.

Interesting read to be taken back to the beginning of the thread in April. Such a lot of people reject health/science expertise even when those experts are proven right months later. It’s a dangerous thing in my opinion.

Of the seven cases, two are returned travellers in hotel quarantine, one from overseas and one from Victoria, NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant confirmed.

Acting Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said he expected strong voluntary take-up of any vaccine that was approved for use.

“Of course, the first will be a voluntary call for people and I’m sure there will be long queues — socially distanced, of course — for this vaccine,” he said.

“There will be very strong campaigns to encourage people and we’ve had experience before of linking vaccination with other programs, and all of those things will be looked at over time.”

I understand Theo. In stage 4 lockdown there are still 4 reasons people can leave the house, also people in those lockdowns that still have work, travel to and from work, sometimes in metro and sometimes to regional areas and back. Curfew means absolutely no one can go out at night unless it is work or a medical reason, So they cant go out to go to shops or party, or see friends.

We rarely curfew here, and the reasons people are saying they are breaking curfew are ridiculous,

one person said he was out to get donuts, another out to get a tank for his pet frog, another out for maccas. The police basically have more powers to stop this with curfew going on and whatever state of disaster we are in.

This is a horrible virus, here if you end up on a ventilator , its odds on, you will succumb to the virus, that takes quite some time and is a very difficult death. The average age of people in icu here is 50 to 65 . But there are young and older people with this virus and dying.

I have a family member working in a hospital in Melbourne with a current hotspot of 42 staff members virus positive. That is a lot of staff, so everyone is getting tested, regardless of symptoms.

Only one person is allowed in a house with stage 3 lockdown, and even stricter with stage 4, The curfew is not for that reason, it is to get people off the streets and keep them home and not going out for fast food and buying frog tanks or going for a drive because they are bored with being in lockdown in the house.

Another big excuse for being out of the house during curfew has been buying cigarettes.
