They completely shut down the open forum entirely. No one but moderators can post on any forum. Looks like there won’t be much discussion of anything there. That’s good. Shutting down Satan’s work is a good thing. 🙂

I just joined this protestant forum after I read this thread and I have started a thread there, check it out, lets get more of us to join that forum and defend catholocism.my thread bibleforums.org/forum/showthread.php?p=516479#post516479
I checked it out and it was a fruitless discussion. All I can say is that at least now we all know the score on what they think.

I suggest that we just let this issue die. There is nothing to be gained by going there to attempt to dialog with those who are unwilling.

We have already seen how BJackson, who purports to be some sort of evangelist to Catholics distorts the teachings and history of the church. I knew he was messed up when he attempted to use the donation of Constantine as a source for the allegation that the pope’s miter has that non-existent latin title that adds up to 666 on it. The donation document is a famous forgery. But he won’t check that.

When he alleged that the Catholic Church murdered most of the Anabaptists I knew where he was getting his info; the infamous “Trail of Blood” that is as full of fictitious allegations as anything that Ellen G. White and the SDA have written against us.

His is not real honest research or information, but misinformation and allegations based on any anti-Catholic source he can find.

Now you all know, and can recognize his organization for what it is…and Godwilling, answer them and all like them.

If this is the level of commitment to truth that Baptist.org wishes to go by, then so be it…but it is a smear on the good name of the Baptist churches all over the world.

I close with one of my favorite quotes from Bishop Fulton J. Sheen.

“Few people in America hate the Catholic religion,
but there are many who hate
what they mistakenly believe is the Catholic religion
—and if what they hate really were the Catholic religion,
Catholics would hate it too.”
Peace be with you all.

Shutting down Satan’s work is a good thing. :)Though I understand you sentiment, I disagree with your remark which implies that they are a work of satan. That is the very same sort of lack of charity that we contest against both here and there. I encourage you to have a look at 1st Peter 3:14-17.

14 But if also you suffer any thing for justice’ sake, blessed are ye. **And be not afraid of their fear, and be not troubled. **15 But sanctify the Lord Christ in your hearts, being ready always to satisfy every one that asketh you a reason of that hope which is in you.

16 But with modesty and fear, having a good conscience: that whereas they speak evil of you, they may be ashamed who falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. 17 For it is better doing well (if such be the will of God) to suffer, than doing ill.

Also Mark 9:37 John answered him, saying: Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, who followeth not us, and we forbade him. 38 But Jesus said: Do not forbid him. For there is no man that doth a miracle in my name, and can soon speak ill of me. 39 For he that is not against you, is for you. (Emphasis mine).

What is most likely going to happen is that they intend to go back and “clean up” the forums by removing most of the posts, or turning it into an information only section.

As I said before…it’s time to let it go.
Peace be with you all,

Well, I for one will let it lay. Good-bye Baptist.Org.

But, did Jesus ever Ban anyone from the “Word of God”?

This reminds me of those 3 monkeys. The first Monkey has his eyes covered, the second has his ears covered, and the third has his mouth covered; == Baptist.org.

That’s fine, I’ll let it go as well. I don’t agree with you. To deliberately lure the faithful away from Christ’s true Church is the work of Satan. But I’ll stop there before I end up getting banned here as well. I do not see them as on the same side though. There are sincere separated brethren in Christ who are on our side and have charity. We have theological differences, but we love one another in Christ. But to deliberately and wilfully attack Christ’s church and deliberately tell falsehoods about Christ’s church makes one an enemy of Christ and the Church. That’s all I’m gonna say on this. God bless.

Has it occurred to you AT that they may see us in this very same light?

I fully agree that no one should attempt to evangelize Catholics away from the faith because that is sheep stealing from another Christian faith.

You overlook the very real possibility that some (most?) of these folks may believe what they do because of misinformation and misunderstanding that comes from a sincere heart & conscience. You assume that it is all willful. I do not. I highly recommend that you reconsider that Reformation/Council of Trent-style rhetoric and focus on being as Christ-like as possible when sharing your faith with those who have not had the graces to come into our most holy faith. If anyone sees the image of Christ in us, how then can they deny that He resides in us and then perhaps listen with an open heart to the truth that we share with them?

May the peace of Our Lord Jesus Christ be always with you.

I don’t want to get into an extended argument about this. Being Christlike means speaking the truth in love. You know what, I was going to write a long post responding to this, but I’m not going to. Nevermind.

My take on it is this.

Most of the folks whom do this sort of thing are completely sincere.

However, there are certain arguements which could not possibly be believed to be true and sincere and which those who offer them simply must be using them in an intentionally deceptive way. For instance, the user that Blacknight commented on concerning the gift of Constantine comes to mind.

When it comes to these people, I can see only two possibilities. They may truly believe for other reasons that the Catholic Church is wrong, and believe that any means necessary must be used to defeat the “evil” that it is. This of course violates the principle that one should not lie even for the cause of good, but nevertheless their hearts are in the right place. However, I do not doubt that some simply argue against the Church in this deceptive way because they either A) realize it is the true Church but due to either stubborness or evil do not care, or B) simply refuse to give God 5 minutes worth of their time to make sure their view is correct, ignoring the fact that they are fallible human beings. Insofar as are concerned these latter class of people I completely agree with amateurthomist.

Thanks Lazer and I’m sorry Blackknight, I was getting impatient. I am also an ex-southern baptist so I know how they think. Much of the ignorance is willful ignorance. Anyway, enough on this.

Oh, for the love of Pete. As an employee in a public affairs office, I’ve got to say that’s the most impolitic move you could make. It’s like an admission of guilt.

One thing I’ve been discovering over the last year as I’ve engaged pastors and lay Protestants is that the idea of a solid, Bible-saturated mass of evangelicals is a myth. It’s a paper tiger. They don’t know squat about the Bible. Even I, someone who got a D in his Principles of Biblical Studies class at Franciscan U., know more about the make-up of the Bible. (The FUS debacle was a decade ago. I’ve since brushed up on my Bible.)

Shutting down their forum reveals something interesting, though. We are sometimes lured into the ecumenical idea that they "just don’t know, but they sincerely believe and therefore act accordingly. Well, if we’ve encountered TWO Protestant sites that have nearly shut down with the presence of Catholics, I’m much more inclined to believe that they suffer from that pesky little whisper of conscience.

My general experience is that their is a large amount of willful hostility toward Christ’s Church on the part of protestants (both liberal and fundamentalist). There is also a large number (perhaps the majority) who don’t really care either way and there is the small number of truly ecumenical and charitable protestants. I don’t see why we can’t make a distinction between our seperated brethren who love Christ and who strive to be the best Christians they can be and who show charity toward us and those other deceived folk who are enemies of Christ’s Church.

It looks like the baptist.org forums are all readable to me? Or are you saying that it’s closed to posting by registered members? I didn’t see any notices about profiling members or anything, so maybe they are already back up and running?

I know what you’re saying, and this is very true - we should not ascribe to maliciousness what is mere ignorance. This affects everything, including the way in which we approach our fellow humans. “Quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”

And I completely agree with you that we should be careful in every word, so that our testimony speaks truth in love. (I am not able to do that, yet - you have to have both knowledge and charity and I’m not very good on either count, much less having them both together. 😉 )

But, some people from here have posted quite reasonably and charitably on that forum (and other forums) - and for every poster on most forums, there are usually a hundred lurkers who never speak.

How many might read the testimony of those who know their faith and realize that they’re seeing lies and viciousness in return for a kind and truthful witness?

How many might do the research required to find that nothing in Catholic teachings is un-Biblical and that nothing Biblical speaks against Catholic teachings?

If it’s even one, it’s worth it! All the angels rejoice over the one…

I admire anyone who can stand in the Lion’s Den and give a righteous account of the reasons for our hope! 👍

I know that baptist.org and bibleforums.org has irrationally decided to censor conversation regarding the Church, but the way the members here are going about things are not God-honoring in my opinion. We are almost treating it as a contest… “Who can get under their skin the deepest and most subtly?”

To flood these other boards makes it almost look like we are Crusaders and is only going to bring about further (ignorant) disdain for the Catholic Church as well as probably bring about complaints against this forum.

I say it would be wise to let 'em wallow, and pray for God to touch their hearts and grant them wisdom.

Our outside guests have been free to blast, ridicule, intimidate and all other castigatory words to those of us who come here to teach one another “the unsearchable riches of Christ” .One major theme of Catholics, Most Protestants, Many Pentecostals, Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, Church of Christ, and other cults is the false doctrine of Water Baptismal Regeneration. All of the previously stated groups all have this common doctrine. Acts 2:38 is their Battle Cry! By this one verse all other verses are interpreted. Baptist Churches, on the other hand know how to flip one more chapter over to Acts 3:19 and hear from the same preacher, Peter, explain away the confusion and misinterpretation of Water Baptismal Regeneration. Do you see Water tying together in either of these two verses? Or do you see person of Jesus Christ, himself as the deliverer of Forgiveness and Eternal Life? What’s what I thought!
The forums are apparently closed and this is part of a message from the board owner on the index page. So what is he talking about? I looked at my NRSV and the former verse is the one that mentions Jesus not that latter.

From Baptist.org Explanation of Forum Moritorium

Did you see that they completely removed the Catholicism forum? That’s a wonderful development! If they are not going to allow the truth of the Church to be represented there, I think it is a wise decision for them not to discuss Catholicism at all.

I had been online responding to another thread when suddenly I was unable to post. I am 99.9% sure that the post that put Bill Jackson over the edge was my dialogue ten minutes before with a Baptist who was agreeing with me that John Smyth was the founder of the Baptist movement. Jackson had told me a week or so ago that Jesus founded his church but he ignored my request for evidence. He didn’t respond to any of my other posts last night - just that one. The reply was the one that I posted above claiming that Catholics killed Baptists and rewrote their history.
I hope that the nice Baptists with whom many of us from CA dialogued will realize why the forums were shut-down - too much truth about the Catholic faith.

I read the quotes that you posted. I didn’t know that Baptists considered Catholics a cult. What is that based on? It would never cross my mind to call members of Baptist churches cult members. 😦

I have to say, I find the purge of the Baptist.org forums to be slightly humorous.

As it is, it would be a wonderful thing if some Catholics could stick on, not to defend the faith, per se, but instead to defuse the hatred against the faith. While I agree with some that it might be possibly a lost cause, at the very least, correcting the grevious misstatements against the Church will allow people’s blinders to be lowered. If they see someone charitably defending the Church against libel day after day, they may end up respecting, if not Catholicism, then at least individual Catholics more. Of course, the behavior of any of the people that do that would have to be blameless, and that’s difficult to do in a frustrating environment.

This thread has been interesting reading, to say the least. I hope that people don’t come out of this hating Catholics or Baptists more. That would be neither productive nor right.

-Rob

It’s because “it’s a place where Protestants go to discuss the PROTESTANT faith.”

I understand why they want to avoid distractions–they have a lot of work to do reconciling their divisions with the Bible…
Actually, they go there to discuss the aberration of faith known as Baptist. I will bet that the people who frequent that board are not the ordinary every day Baptists who get on very well with Catholics, and who, like David Gibbs III, go that extra mile to help others. I will bet that these are the people who have some very strange ideas about the Baptist church, including some of the following that I have heard from ignorant Baptist converts:
  1. John the Baptist started the Church, not Jesus.
  2. How do you know the Church was already in existence? Because at the Last Supper, Jesus and the Apostles sang hymns.
This is just a smattering of the kind of things that I have heard from a fundamentalist Baptist, who has in the past claimed that she was once Catholic.

If this is what is taught in the Independent Baptist Churches then we should be doing some heavy evangelisation because they are ignorant enough to make a claim that John the Baptist started the Church. In the case of this one person she did deny that she made the statement. This is yet another facet that I have come across, for they lie and lie and lie.

This is not to say that there are not millions of good Baptists who do try hard but it pertains to a minority who are totally foolish.
