The Council of Trent denounced every single doctrine that was proposed by the Protestant Reformers. It declared that any person who believes even one of these doctrines is “anathema." Where does that leave a Protestant? It leaves them “anathema” because of their non beliefs of the Catholic traditions and "anathema because of their Protestant beliefs. There were 125 anathema’s decreed at Trent, most of which were directed at the Reformers. In every case, the Reformed beliefs would send the believer to Hell because of the decree. These people are considered outside the church and therefore, outside of salvation because of there beliefs. I am quite sure you and I would both agree that this is what Trent stated so I will go on.

According to “The Catholic Encyclopedia,” the word “anathema” means “cursed and devoted to destruction”. When the Roman Catholic Church anathematizes someone, it officially declares that the person is condemned to hell. A link to this is below.

God Bless - JKAs well the Council should have since the reformation brought into being errors and heresies that had not existed before.

The fundamental errors of Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide were (and still are to this day) the reformation’s basis. They are gross misinterpretations of what the Word of God says and contrary to what the Bible and the Church has taught for 2,000 years.
Outside the Church there is no salvation

In light of those gross errors from which all the other post reformation errors cascade, the Church was correct to condemn them. 🤷

As for Baptists not praying with or shunning Catholics…it depends upon the Baptist that you are talking with at the time. Few pay all that much attention to their own conventions.

this is my first post…so maybe Im not sure what Im doing…I was actually wanting to repsond to jsktheflash’s post and let that person know that I fully believe and back he or her up on what was written in that post, but Im not certain yet how to post behind the particular one Im wanting to respond to! 😊 Some good books to read concerning Biblical teaching would be just about any book written by Jack T Chick. Is it permissible for me to share a website in here?? I didnt want to break any rules??
Thanks
Hi again BB! 🙂

You can post links as per the Forum Rules and Banned Topics, but before you get too far into Jack Chick’s stuff please be aware that there is a very extensive refutation of all his stuff at this link.

If you base your thinking about the Catholic Church upon his stuff then you are far afield of what we really believe and from truth. You might want to read that entire paper before using him as any kind of source.
Welcome to CAF! 🙂
Oh boy…

I do thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut, I truly do. However, your last comment shows the Protestant position quite well. “will bring light to the seriousness of a persons situation”

These reformers were following the Scriptures alone. After all of the offensives that had taken place for hundreds of years by popes (please understand, I am not saying all popes but am rather speaking collectively as a group), these people simply wanted the right to follow the Scriptural teaching of the Lord. This is what was considered the seriousness of the situation. How strange is that. They were being condemned for the literal teachings of the Bible. Luther and Hus did not want to split the church, they simply wanted reform and for the abuses to cease. Do you now see the position that the Protestant is in. With these types of rulings, how can we embrace Rome. Keep in mind, as I stated in my first post, I am not at all speaking of you or of the others in here.
May the Lord Bless you and yours,
JK
JK,

Here again you are stating your personal opinion. Are you going to address the fact that you misrepresented what anathema means? We cannot move forward in the discussion until we have cleared that up. Are you here to search for The Truth or to justify a belief you already hold?

Peace,
David

As well the Council should have since the reformation brought into being errors and heresies that had not existed before.
You mean like justification by faith which is taught in the bible.

The fundamental errors of Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide were (and still are to this day) the reformation. They are gross misinterpretations of what the Word of God says and contrary to what the Bible and the Church has taught for 2,000 years

Gross misinterpretations. To the contrary, sola scriptura and fide allow us to put forth the entire counsel of scripture. I have no need to hide or make excuses for any areas of the gospel or to run to other texts because the reformed position is the only theological position that can prove it’s self by scripture. The catholic positions can only be proven outside of the bible with a claim of infallibility in interpretation by the pope. Meaning, many of its positions are not provable because they depend on the testimony of man and his fallible ways. The reformed system does not rely on this and is provable by pure and correct exegesis.

As far as your claim of being taught for two thousand years, that is very much over inflated. The doctrines of the CC were not taught in a two thousand year time period and many were not handed down by the bible. They were developed over a long time period, tested and debated, and then ratified. Is it wrong for me to state that man is dead and cannot raise himself, therefore Jesus must to do it for him, with out his free will. That’s what the bible states about man but Rome states otherwise. Is it wrong that I state that God, elected his sheep, before the foundation of the world and that no one outside of that election will come to salvation, and that Jesus will save perfectly all that are given to Him by the Father, thus, no one can lose their salvation if they indeed had a true conversion. That’s what the bible teaches about salvation but Rome disagrees. I could go on and on about what the Church feels are misinterpretations but can be proven from scripture. Also, just because taught, does not justify it as valid. Look at Gal:1. How long did it take for corruption to start in their doctrines? 10 or 15 years tops.

No, anathema should not have been declared, but rather, the CC should have used that opportunity to TRULY reform its self of her corrupted ways.
Thanks
JK

I leave you with something to think about -
“You do not believe because you are not my sheep” John 10 -
Notice Jesus did not say your not my sheep because you don’t believe, but rather, He told them that the reason that they did not believe is because they were not apart of His flock. The Greek states they were not able to believe. They were never given the ability to do so. His sheep heard his voice and followed, they were given the ability to do so. The others were not and were left in their in-ability. No free will here. God Bless

I’m not at all ready to do that because you claim that the CC uses it in regards to the ROMANS 9 verse, however, it is almost an exact quote of Gal. 1 where Paul is stating eternal condemnation. So I guess we will not be able to move on. Also, seeing the time it was written in, and what was done to those that opposed the CC (burned at the stake and killed in other ways), I again have a hard time believing that Trent was just trying to show them the error of their ways. That maybe the spin that is put on it now, but it is indeed reality. There, no personal opinion, just fact.

Honestly, no I was not here to find the truth, my original post was to simply answer the post in regards to Baptist fellowship and prayer. I don’t say this to be rude or non-christian, but I could never find truth in a man altered system of theology because it is too shallow and is man centered instead of God centered. It makes Jesus out to be a beggar who tries to save time and time again but fails because mans free will was stronger then Gods. God controls all things by the counsel of His will and has called me to be a Reformed Baptist. I put my trust in Him and Him alone by faith alone.

Blessed be the name of the Lord. I know we will agree on that. I bid you well David and I hope that the LORD BLESSES YOU.

I appreciate all the replies. I am going to try to contact the speaker and ask him.
You just might nip yet another urban legend in the bud. Two months ago, DW and I heard the old one about Catholic funerals where the caskets of big contributors were up by the altar, while those of the poor (or cheap) remained in the rear of the church! The web is probably not helping here…

JK,

St. Paul is not stating eternal damnation with his anathema in Gal.1:8. He is excluding them from the common society of the Church and from partaking of the sacramnets of the Church. You are forcing an interpetation that is not there.

David

Jack Chick? I Pray that you have not fallen for that completely misleading “info”. If you would please, even temporarily, set aside everything you “learned” from him and ask questions here, you will find that the Catholic Church is the complete opposite of what he wants you to believe.

Mr. Chick has been discussed here: catholic.com/search.asp?query=jack+chick

Please, let us inform you on the faith, because you really need the truth. But, first start with your one, biggest objection. We will answer your concern and then proceed to the next. Your temptation will be to fire away with 20 issues, but please, let’s do one at a time.

Christ’s peace be with you.

To jsktheflash, please start a new thread.

All I want here is the source where the SBC said these things, if they did. I don’t want my question to get bogged down in a bunch of heavy theology. At least not on this thread, anyway.

Thanks.

Jack T. Chick is the most well know Anti-Catholic Protestant. Many former-Protestant turn Catholic know him of his false understanding of Catholicism. The second would be Lorraine Boettner’s book Roman Catholicism, is the second well know Anti-Catholic material…

LOL! You’re joking right?😉

I was told today that the Southern Baptist Convention, when they met this summer, encouraged its members to shun prayer with other christians, and that catholics are considered a “cult” of sorts, not good.

I was unable to question the speaker as to his sources, so I’m coming here.

Can anyone direct me to sources for this? I want to clarify what I heard.

Thanks.
I am a convert of 40 years and I’ve never heard about the southern baptist members to shun prayer with other christians. I was a souther baptist and my family still is. I have often ask my sister to pray for some problem I have had and those baptist seem to have a direct line going up. I am thankful for all the prayers they have prayed for my family. Their prayers led me through cancer, brought my husband home from viet nam , saved my diabetic sons leg and I am so glad I know them. Don’t believe everything you hear. Once they know you have a problem they never stop praying and never give up.

The Catholic belief in the Trinity is enough to make them a Christian. Our Church gave the World the Bible.👍

As an ex-Southern Baptist, I’d like to know if this claim is true or not. If someone does not give proof soon, would the moderators please close this thread?
