Can Catholics be Democrats?

Let the Bible form your positions and you won’t be concerned with labels. When in doubt PRAY!

Most priests and bishops in the United States have aligned themselves historically with the democratic party based on the themes of social justice. This has caused some concern among the faithful as the most prominent priests and bishops in America actually opposed Humanae Vitae in the 50’s and 60’s suggesting the Church take a different path with human sexuality to include the lessening of the moral evils of abortion, pornography, and even reconstructing the liturgy to be more inclusive for women; thus blurring the lines of male and female. I would say if you want to please the Catholic bishops in America and the USCCB, by all means register as a Democrat to help them forge the alliance that is needed with the Democratic party and the Catholic Church to influence the Vatican to accept woman priests, gay unions, and contraception which is their immediate goal.

Can we curb the anti-Catholic rhetoric a little before this gets ugly. I am about at my wits end with the attacks on the Church.

how much of the inner city problem is related to the family structure?
Most of it to be sure.
Seriously. Do either of you have ANY data that demonstrates a causal relationship, in any direction, between the absenteeism of the black father to the “inner city problem” (whatever THAT vaguely means) or the “welfare state”?

Seriously, ANY decent, objective data provided by someone who knows what “statistics” and “econometrics” are?

So far, literally all you have given in this posts is reasonable evidence of your racial bias, or at least gullibility.

First, the notion that 67% (I’ve seen 70 elsewhere) of black children are being raised by one parent isn’t correct and it’s been debunked over and over. What is correct is that 67% (or 70%) of black kids live with one parent. That’s a problem, but it isn’t the same as “black kids don’t have dads!”

The Myth of the “Missing Black Father”

As to what causes it? I’ve not seen much objective data that gives social support a causal role. But the article does identify a few factors I’ve seen elsewhere that help keep black folks in the underclass. From the article:

depressed wages
chronic unemployment
discriminatory hiring practices
the history of mass incarceration
housing segregation
inequality in educational opportunity

And I think the biggest cause of all for the “inner city problem” as well as the “rural problem” is the exporting of our decent paying, but relatively unskilled industrial jobs to Asia. We exported our working class jobs. Since the people didn’t leave with the jobs, they had no other niche available to them beyond becoming the “check-drawing, Walmart class”. And that class knows no racial bounds.

I’m only stating what the Bishops in the United States have done for the last 50 years or so. We need to be faithful to the bishops.

I’m just telling you what the American bishops are all about. Talk to them.

Actually, they can. You can be Catholic and not agree with Catholic Church positions on issues. You might not be a good Catholic, but you’re still a Catholic.

That’s true, and it’s one thing for them to hold heresy, but it’s another to promote it within the Church and outside the Church claiming to be Catholic.

Thank you for reading.

Their goal is obviously not to “kill off their own population”.
It is, they believe we are overpopulated, they think we are draining the Earth’s limited resources and coupled with man made climate change we also apparently destroy the planet with the CO2 we breathe. But your right, it’s not just our population that are targets, they push abortion onto 3rd world countries under the guise of humanitarian aid.

They way I understand history, the democrats weren’t with the blacks in the civil rights act of 1964, nor the civil rights act of 1968. Lyndon Johnson was involved but the republicans helped there. The democrats certainly had many reasons why the blacks shouldn’t have the right to vote or be free. But it was the blacks in the trans Atlantic slave trade that sold blacks of other tribes to the whites among others. In the beginning they were called “apprentices” rather than slaves. Then things got worse and the Jim Crowe laws and such.

In the 1500s when the Portugeuese landed in what is now Angola, there were already slave markets. Arabs and Berbers had been in the trade centuries before, and I would say also they made their way into Roman markets. I’m not saying this is right, but African Kingdoms—much like Native American nations—made deals with various European powers to achieve their own ends.

Also, the average lifespan of a white European in Africa prior to the 20th Century was less than a year outside of the coasts It’s not like they were running around the Congo Basin trying to catch villagers in the middle of the jungle.

The Democrat Party, as D’Souza notes, “was the only party known in existence to say not only was slavery good for the master, but it was good for the slave as well”. These are the lengths they went to in order to justify it as public consciousness became uneasy about it.

The Republican Party was founded on the basis of abolition.

Jim Crow was a direct response to ending slavery to keep Black Americans down. The only reason LBJ went along with it, I suspect, was to keep the Democrat Party from falling out of relevancy. The Democrats have had to be drug whining, kicking and screaming ahead when it comes to civil rights. IKE tried to get more legislation passed in the 1950s, but it was blocked by southern segregationists including Al Gore Sr and LBJ himself who was Senate majority leader.

The banner to reduce institutional racism against blacks and to create services to assist them with housing, food and education has overwhelmingly been carried by the democratic party. If by helping a man, we contribute to his continued dereliction, then congratulations. Instead of a win-win, you’ve created a no-win-no-win situation for those who actually wish to be charitable per Christ.
how much of the inner city problem is related to the family structure?

in 1960 22 percent of black children were raised with only one parent. in 2010 the figure was 67 percent.

in 2010 72 percent were born out of wedlock.

what role do you think the welfare state played into this? if any? if not what caused this decline?
Just because you cannot think of any other reason for these stats, that does not mean your guess is right.

In my own opinion, looking at the Democrats platform. I myself couldn’t in good conscience stand behind a party that supports the things they do. Pro choice for example. If I helped elect someone into a position of power that supported that it would be like I myself were responsible for things the Church is utterly against. Lack of chastity and this “always use a condom” non-sense. People have gone sex crazy and that’s never good. Not to mention many other things. We are in total confusion because of sin.

why ask for studies when the article you posted said there were studies?
there are studies that show that children who grow up in two-parent households perform better in school, are less likely to commit crime and have higher future earning potential.
you aren’t telling me obama made it up are you? is he racist? the us census list them as children in single-parent families.

from politifact
Obama’s premise that the absence of fathers is leading to social problems is backed up by research, but we’re not ruling on that part of his statement. We’re ruling on his claim that, “More than half of all black children live in single-parent households, a number that has doubled — doubled — since we were children,” which U.S. Census numbers substantiate. And we rule it to be True.
cnn’s don lemon says more than 72 percent of births are out of wedlock. is he racist? politifact further states these children MAY have contact. not that they do have. may just leaves the door open.
Lemon said that “more than 72 percent of children in the African-American community are born out of wedlock.” Federal data confirms that 73 percent of African-American births in 2010 were out of wedlock. Estimates for the percentage of African-American children growing up in single-parent households are slightly lower, at 67 percent. Finally, black children counted in these statistics may have contact outside the household with their biological father. But Lemon’s statistic was accurate, and we rate his statement True.

it was a question not a guess. it was based on obama’s opinion.

That is not the guess I was referring to. I was referring to the guess about the role of the welfare state in causing this situation.
