Cardinal Dolan: I wouldn't deny communion to Biden

That their position doesn’t tacitly support abortion.

Most pro-choice people I’ve had conversations with, take this position as a way of remaining neutral on the issue overall.

The fact is, and even pro-life Catholics are often ignorant of it, all of our actions impact others directly or indirectly. We are all connected as human beings and it’s why when we sin, we cause harm to others, not just our souls alone. We are all sinners and live in a fallen world because of sin.

No because it’s not directly advocating abortion and so the sin is not obvious in that regard.

Don’t misunderstand me. The pro-choice position is flawed, but most who hold this position, do so out of ignorance.
We would need to define what “direct advocation” is, because it seems to me that supporting laws which keep it legal and even expand it (he now opposes the Hyde amendment) make him an advocate, supporter or what-have-you.

Trump was pro-choice until weeks before the GOP primary. So for him pure transactional politics while being A-moral seems to work out. Transactional faith is popular in history.
Truth is I cannot recall a GOP nominee for president who was Catholic and Catholics themselves will Eli Democrats if they can.

There aren’t any laws going through Congress which would make all abortion illegal.

A direct advocacy position could be a piece of legislation like banning all abortions and the person voted against the bill. But that would have to do with how it’s worded and whether as written, would it stand up before the SCOTUS ?

Trying to get all abortion banned is never going to pass in Congress. Most members of Congress are not going to vote to ban abortion before viability.

Late term abortions have a different response from members of Congress, but again, the wording is important.

Since Roe V Wade, abortion is considered a Constitutional Right. Whether we disagree or not isn’t the point now. Legislators are not going to write a bill which they know will be rejected by the Supreme Court because of the president set by Roe V Wade.

I don’t know if that’s the reason why they changed it, but the fact is, most legislation does not involve direct support for abortion.

I don’t know how that is possible.
The situation with Biden only happened because of his candidacy.
Since that is a material reason it happened, how do you then say politics is not involved?
Not an acceptable idea.

For me the worse thing Biden did and he did right after announcing his run for president, is to be opposed to the Hyde Amendment, which he supported since it was passed.

For me, this showed the lack of character Biden has, in that he won’t stand for his principles if it’s going to get him votes.

I don’t know if that’s the reason why they changed it, but the fact is, most legislation does not involve direct support for abortion.
anything allowing access is direct support. allowing access until birth or just after is direct support. without this access, abortion can not take place. paying for it or providing funds is direct support, without the funds, the abortion doesn’t happen, making the funds available provides direct support. IMHO.

I’m not going to get into a political argument here.

I don’t play “identity politics.”

I can’t keep track of conspiracies and don’t want to. Pizzagate and QANON made it hazardous for mental health

If Trump were to present himself for Holy Communion I think he would be denied communion too. He is certainly not in communion with the Church. So if we are going to judge Biden’s worthiness for our vote based on his worthiness for Holy Communion, we ought to judge Trump by the same standard. (Unless this whole “denying communion” thing is beside the point of any election.
