Cardinal Müller to be removed from top Vatican doctrinal post

Cardinal Gerhard Müller will be removed from his post as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) on July 2, according to multiple news reports.

Cardinal Müller was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to head the Vatican’s doctrinal congregation, for a 5-year term that began on July 2, 2012. Pope Francis has reportedly chosen not to renew his term.

Cardinal Müller had been generally regarded as a conservative presence at the Vatican during the current pontificate, most notably when he insisted that “Amoris Laetitia must clearly be interpreted in the light of the whole doctrine of the Church.” According the Vatican insiders the German cardinal had recommended numerous changes in the controversial papal document, but his suggestions were not accepted. His influence had declined notably in recent months, giving rise to frequent rumors that he would be replaced.

Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna, who was the general editor of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, is regarded as the most likely candidate to become prefect of the CDF.

This is an odd way to operate the universal Church.

Well, this isn’t good. Barring some miraculous and unforeseen appointment, I suppose we can quit pretending that the Pope has merely had his words twisted and misinterpreted these last few years and acknowledge that he clearly wants to try and change church teaching on marriage and sin.

Praise and thank God that the Holy Spirit won’t let that happen. The popes and bishops may have their opinions, but none will be able to become dogma if they are against Truth.

At least on marriage. It’s been my experience that the person who want’s to remain in the church is not the person who sought the divorce in the first place. I never understood why the church took away the sacrament of Eucharist when one needed it most.

Just remarking on my own experience, the people that really care about the Church were not the party who wanted to end the marriage. So if they are an example to the rest of the chruch, what is the message?

A man with no sin finds himself living with a bunch of sinners. He is perfectly happy by himself. He has the power to do anything he wants. But he allows himself to be betrayed, beaten, tortured, and then brutally murdered. He does this so that those very sinners who have betrayed him at every turn, and now are murdering him, can have a chance at salvation.

Crosses grow heavy sometimes. So heavy they even made God stumble.

No, I can’t do that. I am a Catholic and such lack of charity is something I am taught to avoid.

I am not going to re-hash (at least yet) that there is some disagreement on what is doctrine and what is practice in this area. Suffice it to say that the minority opinion is that change cannot happen without changing doctrine, even though this “doctrine” has not been defined, but assumed based on a synthesis of other doctrines, a synthesis that might be faulty.

I do think assuming this has anything to do with Amoris Laetitia is dubious. The timing is all wrong. Perhaps we need a reposting from the Catechism.
