Cardinal suspends Pfleger: 'You are not able to pastor a Catholic parish'

Is it just me, or does it not seem clear that the Cardinal’s words leave the door open for Father to return to St. Sabina?
Yes. The cardinal’s words can be taken that way -
but only to close down his pastorate. Clearly, the
priest has been there far too long. When a pastor
is willing to “lead” his parish in defiance to authority
on the level of the archdiocese, his days as a reputable
pastor are done.

The greater issue is suspension of his faculties. If
Fr. Pfleger chooses to be obedient, it seems likely
that he will be allowed to conclude his pastorate at
St. Sabina’s as a new job is found for him and that
transfer comes to be. The issue has become his
disdain for any new job.

He is still being allowed to live there.
If he chooses to become obedient, there
could be a typical, normal, celebratory “good-bye.”

Not so sure…seems there are doors still open…

Thank you for the link to the Chicago Tribune regarding the suspension.

Cardinal George has been overly patronizing with Pfelger for some reason.

Cardinal Francis George is a man of peace - quite dissimilar to to Fr. Pfleger.

And the suspension is long over-due.
Cardinal George needs our prayers for strength and courage.

Someone needs to tell St. Sabina parishioners
(and others who are not even Catholic and sure to join the protest just for the publicity), that the vow of Obedience of Priests is taken seriously in the Catholic Church.

Pfelger has not been teaching the Catholic faith. It appears he has been using Church property to teach the ‘Religion of Pfleger’.
When you watch the video, you will see he even believes that Jesus did the wrong thing in choosing men for the 12 Apostles since they did not stay at the foot of the Cross. (his backhanded excuse for women’s ordination and married priests ? ? ? ).

That’s exactly what I said.
Doors are open to ease his departure in an orderly way.

As for re-assignment to St. Sabina’s?
That won’t be happening.
His time is up (even in the diocesan sense).
The Cardinal knows it, the archdiocese knows it, Fr. P knows it.

If, on the other hand, this priest continues in his defiance,
then the last open door will close. Already he is described
as “not able to pastor,” having publicly separated himself
from the authority of the Church.

He has time now to correct himself - or not.

I am not certain his time at St. Sabina’s is up.

I still say the Cardinal’s words do not mean that Father is removed from St. Sabina. There can easily be some agreement to allow him to stay there.
You may be correct. That is why we must pray for Cardinal George. He has the responsibility to insure that Church teachings are followed within his Chicago Diocese.
He has been far too lenient with this heretical and schismatic priest.

Acc to the Cardinal’s letter, this priest has long agreed that
he wants a new assignment, away from St. Sabina’s.

That will happen.

The world can not continue to revolve around this
priest’s latest “wishes.” Basically, he has rebuked the Cardinal
in public - through the media. How can he be trusted anywhere?
He leads his parishoners into dissent against the Church.

Please! It’s over.

I am not trying to be difficult, it is just that the Cardinal did not actually say Father was removed. He is simply suspended with the request to pray about and consider the matter for a few weeks. It can easily be that Father comes back, publicly apologizes for the statements he made to the media and asks to remain at St. Sabina’s.

He has “asked” and been refused already.
His current tenure is already an exception.

What is to be hoped is that this priest finds the humility
to allow the parish to give him a grand (and normal) good-bye.
He is a priest who must serve the CHURCH, not his own whims.

Cardinal George has shown incredible patience and tolerance in this matter, I suspect that will continue…time will tell. 🙂

It is continuing now.
This priest was not put out on the street.
I think what you are not acknowledging with this is that Cardinal George has a very tolerant past with Father Pfleger…has let him remain at St. Sabina’s well beyond the norm. I see no reason why that will not continue if Father Pfleger apologizes.

Acc to the Cardinal’s letter (and the known history) Fr. P has ASKED to be
transferred a number of times in recent years. Also, he SHOULD be transferred.

My conclusion: he will be transferred - and the sooner, the better.
Already his “followers” plan to picket the home of Cardinal George.

Excuse me - WHAT???

Wrong. The Cardinal’s tolerance in this regard is well-known to all.
Some saw it as weakness. I didn’t. Perhaps the followers of Fr. P did.

I must be clumsy with my words because I have failed to impart my opinion correctly.

I believe there is a very good chance that the Cardinal and Father Pfelger will reconcile and that Father will remain as Pastor at St. Sanbina. As just a simple conjecture I feel there is a reasonable possibility of that happening.

I live about 3 miles away from St. Sabina’s. I would never, never go there for “Mass”. It is seriously barely Mass. The parish nearest my house is also under this same umbrella of liberalism where multi-culturalism is more important than being faithful to the Church. But I digress…

I believe that Fr. Pfleger has done a lot of wonderful things in terms of being active in the parish community and community at large. I believe priests should be doing a lot more of this sort of thing. At the same time, I believe there is a lot of egotism going on here with Fr. P and that his personal crusades within the community have become more important to him than serving the Church. If this is the case, then he must leave the Church. I would not like that to happen though. I would love for him to move to another parish and continue his activism there…and for him to influence other priests to activism.

I agree with you. The Triumphalism leaves me a bit sick to the stomach, too. After all, what is happening in Chicago isn’t a football game. There are no winners in this situation. It is a sad situation and should be treated as such.
Agreed.

Already his “followers” plan to picket the home of Cardinal George.
The turnout was estimated by both the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times to be in excess of 100 protesters. The police ordered the protesters to stay across the street from Cardinal George’s residence, which is where everyone assembled for the press conference. However, after that was done, one of the organizers urged everyone to cross the street to protest directly in front of the Cardinal’s home. The two cops on hand were unable to hold them back. They stayed for 30 minutes and, judging from the photos, remained on the public sidewalk.
