Yes. The cardinal’s words can be taken that way -Is it just me, or does it not seem clear that the Cardinal’s words leave the door open for Father to return to St. Sabina?
but only to close down his pastorate. Clearly, the
priest has been there far too long. When a pastor
is willing to “lead” his parish in defiance to authority
on the level of the archdiocese, his days as a reputable
pastor are done.
The greater issue is suspension of his faculties. If
Fr. Pfleger chooses to be obedient, it seems likely
that he will be allowed to conclude his pastorate at
St. Sabina’s as a new job is found for him and that
transfer comes to be. The issue has become his
disdain for any new job.
He is still being allowed to live there.
If he chooses to become obedient, there
could be a typical, normal, celebratory “good-bye.”
