In fairness to the parish I think you need to attend services at St. Sabina’s before you make that type of assessment. These “worship services” do not resemble a Catholic Mass one bit.

I am so thankful that the Cardinal has made this decision. Fr. Pleger many times can be a divisive individual. In many of his sermons he not only preaches non-Catholic teachings, he also makes it about us (the parishioners) vs them (the Church authorities). I went to the church’s website and thought I clicked on the wrong church. There is not one thing on the website that indicates it is a Catholic Church. For example the word “Mass” is replaced with “worship service.” There are audio/video sermons on the website in which one can clearly hear Fr. Pfleger preaching about women priest, relationship with Jesus as opposed to religion. These “worship services” do not resemble a Catholic Mass one bit. It is so sad

Please let us keep Cardinal George in prayer as he will be facing much persecution for his decision.
This saint will:Pfleger does need prayer, but no thank you to those that advise no criticism. He’s damaging the Church and the Faith. Someone needs to speak up.
We’ve had enough of exhortations. Cry out with 100,000 tongues! I see that the world is rotten because of silence!

I know this is off-topic, but I just want to point out that there are several good churches in Chicago besides St. John Cantius . . . such as Shrine of Christ the King, St. Mary of the Angels, Monastery of the Holy Cross, etc.Trust me, just go to St. John Cantius. Everywhere else is just going to be unbearable.
For those who wonder about the false teachings of Pfleger in direct opposition to the Catholic Church, please watch the video link.Thank you for the link to the Chicago Tribune regarding the suspension.
Cardinal George has been overly patronizing with Pfelger for some reason.
And the suspension is long over-due.
Cardinal George needs our prayers for strength and courage.
Someone needs to tell St. Sabina parishioners
(and others who are not even Catholic and sure to join the protest just for the publicity), that the vow of Obedience of Priests is taken seriously in the Catholic Church.
Pfelger has not been teaching the Catholic faith. It appears he has been using Church property to teach the ‘Religion of Pfleger’.
When you watch the video, you will see he even believes that Jesus did the wrong thing in choosing men for the 12 Apostles since they did not stay at the foot of the Cross. (his backhanded excuse for women’s ordination and married priests ? ? ? ).

This may not be entirely accurate, since another news source indicates that Fr. Smith was appointed to be assistant administrator at St. Sabina during Pfleger’s suspension. That (much longer) article indicates that the current associate pastor, the Rev. Thulani Magwaza, was appointed to be the administrator of St. Sabina.Father Andrew Smith moved into the rectory around 9 a.m. Friday on orders from Cardinal Francis George and Bishop Joseph Perry of the Chicago Archdiocese, according to a statement from the Faith Community of St. Sabina.
Yeah, no thank you. I don’t believe one has to physically attend his service in order to know that there is hardly anything recognizable as Catholic teaching. There are plenty of videos on his site, some over an hour (of the worship service-intended to be seen by those who can’t make it there) plus the videos on youtube. So I would say that several hours of content would give me a pretty good idea (and yes I have looked at all of it). I am worried about the attitude of some parishoners who seem to think Fr. Pfleger is being discriminated against. They have even picketed outside of Cardinal George’s house. God help all involved! In fairness to the parish I think you need to attend services at St. Sabina’s before you make that type of assessment.
Well, what if I, who have been there, say you are wrong? A youtube video really is not a tool to assess a parish.Yeah, no thank you. I don’t believe one has to physically attend his service in order to know that there is hardly anything recognizable as Catholic teaching.
Just like the picketers when a parish school or church is closed.I am worried about the attitude of some parishoners who seem to think Fr. Pfleger is being discriminated against. They have even picketed outside of Cardinal George’s house. God help all involved!
(bolded): your against that? I know some priests who also preach in that manner…sometimes it’s needed, perhaps going overboard every mass is a bad thing, but every now and then it’s good. The Church is for the lay people…they have a right to know what is happening and deserve a voice (in some aspects). God Bless!I am so thankful that the Cardinal has made this decision. Fr. He supported Obama. You dont defend life by empowering those who dont respect it.I’ve never met the man, but I like his style…it’s refreshing. Seems like he has accomplished so much in his life. Yes he may have gone a bit overboard by being on Obama’s campaign, but in the end he was doing it to inspire his local African-American Catholic Community. Fr. Pfleger has a book that’s worth checking out…here’s the link: amazon.com/Radical-Disciple-Pfleger-Justice-Catholicism/dp/1569765286
P.S. Just want everyone to know that Fr. Pfleger is very much pro-life. God Bless!
Last time I checked Obama did…he’s big into social justice issues…then you have Republicans on the other coin who are pro-death penalty, pro-war, and pro-guns…yeah that’s respecting life too isn’t it??? You pretty much put yourself into a trap by saying the above^^^. God Bless! He supported Obama. You dont defend life by empowering those who dont respect it.

You are not familar with Catholic teaching on abortion are you? No issue or combination of issue trump abortion. Here what the Pope said:Last time I checked Obama did…he’s big into social justice issues…then you have Republicans on the other coin who are pro-death penalty, pro-war, and pro-guns…yeah that’s respecting life too isn’t it??? I highly doubt that the Cardinal cared about opinion outside his own archdiocese. Fr. Pfleger publicly threatened to leave the Church if he didn’t get his way. That was his mistake. You don’t publicly threaten your Ordinary.Since this took so long, I suspect the unrelenting outrage of faithful Catholics over Fr. Pfleger’s many infractions was instrumental in this “suspension.”
Not in any business!I highly doubt that the Cardinal cared about opinion outside his own archdiocese. Fr. Pfleger publicly threatened to leave the Church if he didn’t get his way. That was his mistake. You don’t publicly threaten your Ordinary.
I attended Mass at St. Sabina’s a few times in the 80’s and Fr. Pfleger presided. The community is largly African-American and many members were either converts from Protestantism or had family and friends who were raised and active in Protestant communities. The music certainly wasn’t chant or plainsong and instruments other than the pipe organ were used, but it was uplifting music which helped me to focus on the presence of the Lord. Fr. Pfleger’s homiletic style was more akin to the rythms and cadences of Black southern preachers and he focused on the liberating power of the Gospel and it’s role in shaping a Black ethnic consiousness. Some things were different from what is often experienced in White ethnic parishes throughout Chicago, but it was most definitely the Catholic Mass. St. Sabina’s is a Catholic Church and Fr. Pfleger served as a Catholic priest in that “faith community” for many, many years. No one in authority ever denied or questioned the Catholic identity of the community as far as I know. You may have your opinion as to what constitutes a “Catholic” liturgy, but it is certainly not definitive, and frankly, I’m glad you are not the one who determines such things.Yeah, no thank you. I don’t believe one has to physically attend his service in order to know that there is hardly anything recognizable as Catholic teaching. Its about time this fake priest was chastised, but unfortunately he still wears the collar.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chibrknews-cardinal-suspends-pfleger-20110427,0,6343086.story
This is unfortunate, although perhaps unavoidable.
Here is a copy of Cardinal George’s letter to Fr. Pfleger.
