While I do not desire to debate or argue anything with you I humbly feel I owe you an explanation. I guess what I have to admit is my own ignorance…I have heard of the Inquisition throughout my life time never paying much attention to it. In my mind it was something that happened way back in the 1100’s. I have never been sure what that was all about and also never concerned myself to find out. When I stirred up reactions from you and others today it was a surprise to me to get asked what I know of the Inquisition. Just now I have had the time to Google it and read a Catholic tract explaining that what happened in the 1500’s is also referred to as the Inquisition. Thus was actually a new thought for me so I guess I am maybe the only uninformed guy out here. Now I understand the venom in some od the replies I received.

I am more familair with the persecution the Anabaptist people endured in those days (hence the Amish aspect) than I am of any other group. It may well be that my statement does not apply to the bigger picture of what was taking place back then. I am not retracting my statement because it is true, however, I appreciate that not many really know what actually occurred with this particular group of believers. There is a reason they are now referred to as “the quiet in the land.”

Peace.
I suspected you were not thinking of the Inquisition, when you spoke of the MATYR’S MIRROR.

If you have enough interest to read more on the Inquisitions, two book recommendations:

Kamen/THE SPANISH INQUISITION, Porter/INQUISTION. The latter is more detailed and covers the range of the Inquisitions. Both are excellent history; neither is the Black Legend, neither is a whitewash.

My admiration for the Amish is first of all, based on their Christian devotion, and in particular their simple living and denial of the conveniences of modern technology. I can appreciate that if done for keeping oneself better focused on Spiritual life. I’m sure there are many Catholic monks who live similar disciplines.

I am not advocating their separation from the Catholic Eucharist. And the state of many of these communities and their individuals is not from their own choice to separate with the Catholic Church.

Thank you. PM anytime bro.

Peace,
Michael

Thank you for the referrals. Have you read any of the MARTYRS MIRROR?

Hang in there brother! 🙂 It can sometimes become a spirited debate here. There are people here at all levels of education from novice (me) to experts (John Martignoni etc.).
I sincerely hope I have not offended you in anyway. I consider you a Christian brother and look forward to more conversations with you!!! 😉

Snippets on line. Which I don’t count as really reading. I’m a book man.
I like a book in my hands as well . I borrowed that book last winter, all 1100 pages of it. Some of it is continous accounts of martyrdom which reads like an obituary page. There was one actual documented discourse between a Catholic clergy and an Anabaptist lay person which was quite interesting however I cannot remember the page number so that does not help. I maybe able to find it.

They disturb me (in a good way) - they remind me that living a sincere Chrisitan life is probably more important than knowing theological minutiae.

Amen. And so, we carry on towards that which comes from above, in order to accomplish His will.

1 Corinthians 2

God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what person knows a man’s thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit.

I almost require a book in hands, owned by me. Started doing that 60 years ago. Got around 30,000 of them in hand, currently. Or in attic, garage, storage units, and even bookcases.

I think you need to stop purporting the 30,000 book claim!

That was to be the next post in the series. An observation on the close fit between the number of books I own and the (oft asserted) number of protestant denominations.

Mine are available for review.

… and how do you define a book? Are you including all your Jack Chick tracts? 😉

Indeed. Not. And that would only add one title, anyway.

Books are defined as bound, printed materiel. Magazines not counted, unless bound in a volume, with covers, comics, likewise. Manuscripts, monographs, pamphlets, scrolls and anything at all recorded in any form of electronic media, not counted. These latter are not books, as we know.

And, of course, books are counted once, for every country in which they appear. Must be my books, to be counted, though.

By the way, if I personally was to define “denomination”, it would maybe be like this:

An established group of members, who profess one body of doctrine and observe one leadership to govern it’s matters. The primary, Christian sign of this initiation being Baptism, and it’s visible, outward sign of active participation being Communion.

That would leave out all congregational churches, autonomous churches that come together as a group, and any church that doesn’t practice communion. It would include LDS.

I agree. There are a lot of churches with doctrinal differences over Baptism, Communion, etc. They are still churches
