I honestly believe that being a sola scriptura Christian is pleasing to God. Listen to the words of Jesus because Scripture will always point us to Himself. You don’t have to agree with me. 🙂

Matthew 4:4

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

We are two days from what? 😉
This comment doesn’t make any sense 2nd Adam. You said that you think God is pleased with SS Christians and then quote Matt. 4:4 which states that man lives by every word thay comes from the mouth of God. This doesn’t make sense because a SS christian would only go by what is written, not by “every word that comes” from the mouth of God

And of course we know that there are things that Christ did that are not recorded in the Scriptures:
But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Jn 21:25

It’s extremely essential, but not to divide over it.
Another confusing statement:confused:

If something can be “extremely essential” and not worth dividing over, why was there ever a Reformation in the first place? Why are you celebrating Reformation Day? Why are you not going to a Catholic Church?

You are just one big giant

😃 God bless you

Well, it is no different than the Magestrium calling Protestants seperated bretherns. It’s a juggling act to contend for the faith and keeping the unity of the Spirit. :juggle::juggle::juggle: If we make all of our theological distinctives as lines in the sand, we cannot ever move forward in Christian unity. ECT 1 and ECT II are actually pretty good stuff. The framers and signers of ECT 1 and ECT II are actuall sound gifted Christians on both sides.

This didn’t answer my question. If it is “extremely essential” but not worth “dividing over” how can you justify your continued separation? Why was there a Reformation?

We agree, we just don’t agree Scripture is the supreme authority, nor that it is the only thing that points us to Christ.

I agree, but is it just the written words that come from the mouth of God?

Eve of All Saints Day. Praise God.
The Eucharist (communion) points us to Christ too!

I’m an ecumencial Reformed Calvinist Christian… what do you expect?

He has correctly observed that, as more Catholics read their bibles, more Protestants need to be deep in history. When he does this, he will learn the fallacy of his claim that the Catholic Church is “coming around” to agree with Luther. 😉
Most conversion stories I’ve heard start with the person studying the history of Christianity. It is hard to take a protestant seriously who **does not care **about where the bible comes from, yet wants to tell the author what it means.

The Bible comes from God; it is God-breahed revelation!

Yes, but through which earthly instrument did God use to bring it to you, and to inform you that it indeed was God-breathed?

Or does that not matter? If not, that’s kinda like saying, you’re you and you don’t really care about your mother since although she was instrumental in bringing you into the world, she really has nothing to do with who you are today.

Honestly, I really believe dear brothers like Scott Hahn let go of Sola Scriptura in error.
hold onto the traditons wether by word or epistle says St Paul

Seems like Mr Hahn is just doing what the Bible says.

Matthew 4:4 “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
And sometimes His word comes in oral from - i.e. His word is not limited to the Scriptures alone.

As you well know, within Christendom, we have various views on communion (Lord’s Supper, Eucharist). If Christians do not have the same view as the Catholic Church, does that mean we are condemned and lost? Scripture reveals that what is not done in faith is sin. If I cannot receive the Catholic view of the Eucharist in faith, then it would be a sin to receive communion differently than my conscience beforre God. I think you’re other doctrines are important, but are not essential doctrines to be considered to be a Christian.
Christ had one view, so why are there various views? Shouldn’t there be just one view? Who’s view is right? Who gets to decide? Don’t all claim the Spirit and correct interpretation of the Scriptures? Christ said eat his flesh or no life - this is not some small issue we’re talking about.

As for the last bit about not essential doctrines, purgatory is part of God’s kingdom - I would have thought His kingdom was most essential and improtant? Free will and works too.

Does the Spirit tell individuals what the canon is? So we know what to read.
If so why different canons in Catholicism and Protestantism?

I used to wonder why God allows division and false teaching in the universal church. We all know God has the power and ability to create perfect unity here on Earth if He wanted to. But in His infinite wisdom, division is allowed for His divine purpose and our good. It is through our struggles, suffering, and personal trials… that He grows us up in Christ. Because we are not completely redeemed here on earth, we will always know in part and believe in something that is not true. We are called to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ throughout our entire life… therefore, we seek God daily and ask for His daily provision of His grace… remaining dependent on Him each and every day. We are called to live for the glory of God, regardless of being Catholic or Protestant. If you find yourself glorifying God with greater capacity as a Catholic Christian… praise God. If you find yourself glorifying God with greater capacity as a Protestant Christian… praise God. For those who are united to Christ, we are truly one body.

That’s a tough one. I don’t see that the Apostles to be Catholic when I read their writings. Therefore, if God used men like Paul, Matthew, John, James, etc, then I simply see sinners saved by grace to the praise of His glorious grace. I do not see Mary, James, or Peter to be Catholic, and Paul to be Protestant.

One faith said St Paul
How is division in Christendom a good thing?

Sure there are struggles in life, doesn’t mean we can thumb our noeses up at divine commandmants, or say “well you believe God said to eat his flesh for life, I believe he meant something else, oh well never mind…”

Ephesians ch4
1 I therefore, a prisoner in the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called:
2 With all humility and mildness, with patience, supporting one another in charity.
3 Careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 One body and one Spirit: as you are called in one hope of your calling.
5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism.
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in us all.
7 But to every one of us is given grace, according to the measure of the giving of Christ.
8 Wherefore he saith: Ascending on high, he led captivity captive: he gave gifts to men.
9 Now that he ascended, what is it, but because he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended above all the heavens: that he might fill all things.
11 And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and other some evangelists, and other some pastors and doctors:
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the word of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Until we all meet into the unity of faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the age of the fulness of Christ:
14 That henceforth we be no more children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the wickedness of men, by cunning craftiness by which they lie in wait to deceive.
15 But doing the truth in charity, we may in all things grow up in him who is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body, being compacted and fitly joined together, by what every joint supplieth, according to the operation in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body, unto the edifying of itself in charity.
