Where are the adults? That’s my question. Where are the adults?

I dunno - it seems kinda irrelevant IMHO, as these people are adults, at least in terms of chronological age. Whether the perpetrators be 19 or 30 - these events are no longer exceptional, they are happening all over the world on a repeated basis. 😦

If the health and strength of the Church is not relevant and if the salvation of those lost souis is not relevant I suppose you are right. But then please tell me what is relevant?

They are 19 and 20 years old for cryin’ out sideways!!! These are not “younguns”!!!
One was 18, but the average age of the six who were arrested is 22. But as you said, they are old enough to know better.

I don’t understand why some of the posters in this thread have called it a hate crime. I didn’t see anything in their statements to indicate they had anti-Catholic intent. To me, it appears they picked Holy Name Cathedral on Easter because it was a big target on a big day, and would get them press attention.

I think their stunt backfired, and I think the whole thing unwise. The Catholic Church has not supported the Iraq war. Splashing fake blood at Catholic cathedral makes about as much sense as splashing fake blood on PETA headquarters to protest the meat industry.

I guess I am not understanding. Isn’t an adult a person who is 18 year and older? Weren’t these criminals over the age of 18? So I am guessing that they are the adults.

Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing something.

Is nothing sacred? In our parish, during the prayer petitions, peace is mentioned every week! It seems the Catholic Church is becoming THE place for political protests. It wasn’t so long ago that some activists made their “statement” during the communion portion of the Holy Mass in San Francisco. Hopefully, this trend will not last.

Obviously I did read the post and I didn’t understand, thus my first post.🤷
As I said several times many many people have been so pampered that they have not grown up. These people acted childishly. But where are those who acted as adults. Where are the mature leaders who step forward and teach young adults how to become real adults? Where are the challenges to our young people to take adult responsibilities? The future of the Church and the future of each generation depends upon adults who take the responsibility to train the next generation. Hopefully, these young people will be chastened by the punishment that they hopefully will receive but what about all of the other young adults who have grown up without adult guidance? What about these young people? What about the future of the Church in America if we don’t teach youth and young adults how to be adults?

Seriously, is that a hard concept to grasp? Is it not obvious that we have had several generations in our country get chronologically older but who haven’t had the challenges set before them that will help them mature.

Hope without action doesn’t amount to much. Where are the Ignatius Loyolas or Anthony of Paduas of this generation? Where are the adult males who will act like adult males and discipline and guide our young adults? Without them things will only get worse.

Thank you for explaining that.

I agree with what you said, but we must remember that we are the adults you are speaking of. It is the way we behave, and we must remember that the we are you and I - concentrate on the I here. It is like what Fr Corapi always says, the reason why the world is not Catholic is because of me.

I wonder if they are in prison. I wonder if the Archbishop has visited them. I wonder if any in the congregation has visited them. I wonder if that older gentleman who has cancer and was assaulted by these twits will visit them. Do you recall what Pope John Paul II did for the man who tried desparately to kill him? Seems like a good pattern for an adult to follow.

So if the Church supported the war it would be OK to squirt them with fake blood and disrupt the Mass?
That’s not what I suggested. But to protest the war at the cathedral where most of the parishioners are likely already Democrats and anti-war (not to mention that the bishops are generally anti-war) just seems silly and counterproductive. You’re only angering some of the best (and richest) supporters of your own agenda. If someone wants to make a statement, it would seem more reasonable (if not justifiable) to confront those who may actually disagree with your position.

Actually, this did not happen in Holy Name Cathedral, but in an auditorium where Cardinal George was saying Mass. Holy Name is currently closed for repairs because a chunk of its ceiling recently fell down. The “protesters” picked Cardinal George specifically because the cardinal once had lunch with President Bush about a year ago. The local news reported today that the fake blood did about three thousand dollars worth of damage to the auditorium’s carpeting. It couldn’t be washed out. I hope a judge makes these kids pay for all the damage they caused.

I think there is a larger question of concern which this incident raises: the security of the cathedral and the cardinal. No one is talking about that. These sorts of incidents ought to almost be expected, considering the public importance and attention that such an occasion offers. How well is the Archdiocese prepared for them?

The auditorium is part of the cathedral complex, just across a courtyard from the church.

I never did understand why protesters for peace sometimes commit violent and destructive acts like this.

Great to see people’s comments of compassion here.

‘If they did that in my church…etc’
