Christmas lists where you're TOLD what you can/cannot ask for?

No, it doesn’t mean anything other than that’s what SHE wants. Who says you have to go, or even show up at that time? Tell her you have plans to sleep in and will be there sometime before lunch/dinner. 🤷

If she says “No Gifts, then,” respond with a quick, “Oh, that’s fine. We come to see the family, not to get things!”

I’m sorry. I think this is absolutely ridiculous. So YOUR Christmas is going to be ruined and stressed because you will feel the need to get your over-excited kids in bed earlier than they’d normally be in bed at Christmas, in order to travel well or be grumpy all day at Grandma’s, all because she is demanding you be at her house at such-and-such a time? She’s essentially *punishing *you because you live too far away. 🤷 If you lived closer where she wanted you to live, then you’d be there for sure at 9AM, but you’re two hours away and she still has no leeway.

I’m going to be blunt, so excuse me. :o You have been doing this catering to MIL far too long. You know how she manipulates you, but you don’t DO anything about it. If you don’t have any plans of changing things, then I don’t really feel sorry for you. 😊 I just don’t. People who want things to change find a way to make that change happen, EVEN IF it means not going to Christmas at her house anymore, and you can do that - because like you said, you are your own family now and have every right to enjoy your holiday together apart from “distant relatives”.

And Sancta agrees. 😉
**
Sancta, I agree w/ you about staying home and telling her to drive here. However we decided years ago that HE is to deal w/ her as I can’t take much more of her… We’ve had confrontations in the past, it’s to the point that when she calls I try not to answer the phone, she’s been that hostile (mainly bossy and controlling) towards me that I’ve had my fill. Problem is is that DH is sooo passive that he lets everything go and gives into her. It’s actually sickening me as I write this. Every year we go thru this whole gift issue and the whole "it’s her Christmas’’ stuff (which for some reason is EVERY year, funny how that happens, isn’t it?), and every year he ends it w/ “let’s just go so I don’t have to listen to her b ^&*% at me.” And that to me is wrong, he’s giving into her and it’s been ongoing for way too long. I feel like the door mat that has to hop in the car bright and early EVERY single year because he won’t tell her no! :(**

Again, turn it back on her. Maybe next year invite her to your house for Christmas. If she says,** “No, I don’t travel on the holidays,” just matter of factly state: “Yeah, I understand. We don’t either, anymore. Too bad we won’t be able to get together, but we’ll try to see you in a month or two!”/**QUOTE]

I LOVE this idea!! :yup: Now to put it into action! 👍

Well said!
Setting up " boundaries around" ourselves is sometimes very important when dealing
with certain peoples, or life situations.
Actually, in some cases the controlling individual enjoys, and anticipates a reaction to
their demands, so that they can find fault with it and continue the drama.
**Also, in some social dynamics the individual that “accepts” the controlling persons
behavior on a regular basis, finds a sub-concious pleasure in feeling victimized by that person.****In no way am I stating that the lady that started this thread is finding pleasure in her
particular, ongoing situations with her MI…**At least she is aware of the negative effect this
ongoing behavior has on herself.
Power-tripping can also be a form of being a bully, and building their own self esteem,
which is usually low. Usually they are “addicted” to this form of bullying that can begin
at an early age.
I set boundaries around myself when having to deal with TOXIC people.
Our Creator gave us the intelligence and discernment to know when to implement this
form of wisdom. Not only are we assisting ourselves, but also at times the controller
begins to practice introspection on their toxic behavior, and it may assist others
that person is trying to bully, or will try to bully.
Then I add them to my Rosary intemtions…😉
Actually I am not feeling victimized rather our whole family is being ‘controlled’ by her ‘guilt trips’, etc And then she’ll yell and turn on the crocodile tears to make DH feel bad.
.🤷. The reason this is all ongoing is because DH won’t tell her ‘what’s up.’ That’s the problem, and like I stated earlier, I don’t deal w/ her, she’s that rude to me that I my blood pressure can’t handle her at all. I’ve got thousands of things I could type that she’s done to hurt us, but it would take years to do that. However it continues because he won’t tell her to leave us the heck alone and let us come visit when we feel like it. If she wants to come here, she’s more than welcome to, but to expect us to come to her every year as she sits on her throne is just plain wrong in my opinion. Very selfish of her not to ever leave HER house on the holidays but we’re all expected to. Esp. rude of her to expect this EVERY year…every other year is another story but it’s EVERY year!!!

The more I read, Mamacita, the more I see myself 20 years ago, jumping to my mom’s every whim, regardless of the effect this had on me, my family or my marriage. It took a huge effort of will to break free from the cycle of being manipulated or guilted into the position she wanted me in, it also took years to really break free from the destructive pattern. It’s hard, and, should your husband decide to take that step, he’ll need support from you not to slip back into the familiar “I won’t rock the boat, Mom” path of least resistance.

And would you believe that 8 years ago I allowed my eldest and grown up daughter to manipulate me in the same way and had to go through the same heart-breaking and difficult process of opting out of the controlling game.

The best advice I can offer you is first that I think the battle for this Christmas may have been lost, but you can now start the battle for next Christmas. 😉 And the place you start this one is in prayer. DH needs to make a stand and if all your CAF friends pray strength for him in this matter, you’re well on the way. I personally will hold you in every Rosary I pray.

Been there, done that, suffered the pain and wounds, but it was worth it in the long run and I thank God for the people who helped me move out from under the cloud of manipulation, may your family, led by your DH also experience that healing.

**Thanks, Vivienne. I am so tired of the manipulation that is going on it’s sickening. DH NEEDS to stand firm and not sway. I try and try to pray for her that she’ll back down and let us be OUR OWN FAMILY, but those prayers haven’t been answered which means yes, pray for my DH (and I) that we have the strength to tell her how it is, that we are our own family, and that she needs to deal w/ it. 👍 Every single Christmas since we’ve met has been traveling to see this woman! It needs to stop (and it’s not easy when you have 4 kids).

Someone said earlier (can’t remember who it was) that she is in theory trying to ‘punish’ us for not living closer to her (her words each year are “you need to be here at ‘x’ time” when we’re the ones that have the furthest to drive), I think that is precisely correct…she’ll do anything in her power to make us miserable because we won’t live closer to her. 🤷**

You know, it’s weird, but I actually went through this when we lived in Florida, when the kids were little, BEFORE we moved to Pittsburgh. My sister was married at the time, her kids were in their teens. She could have easily come to see us, we were about 3 hours away in Orlando, she lived in south Florida. No, I HAD to pack up a baby and toddler, a mobile crib, and schlep down to see her year after year, she had very little gratitude. One year I said NO MORE. I’m done. She can complain, lay on a guilt trip, I don’t care. It really boiled down to what you are saying here–WE WANTED TO BE OUR OWN FAMILY. Not that I didn’t want to see her for the holidays, but truthfully, it was never fun, an overly materialistic day that to me, was not worth the visit. This was also before my sister and I mended fences. But, suffice to say…the only way this will change is if you stop going. Period. Let her cry…let her moan. When you don’t show, she might not speak to you for a while…she has the issues, not you and your husband. She does. I think that if it were a jolly old time, you’d be more than willing to get into the car ‘‘bright and early’’ and make the drive, but it’s not. So, don’t stress yourselves anymore. It’s his mom, I know…but, at some point, the madness has to stop. She’ll get over it. My sister did.

Now, fast forward to we are living in Florida again…and my sister invited us to her place for Christmas. My husband has to work 1/2 a day on Christmas. I’m not NOT going to spend that time with him. I’m not going to jump into my car, and drive in the afternoon for 4 hours, to go and see her. Nope. Those days of jumping through hoops are done. And guess what? Because I laid the foundation for this years ago when the kids were little, she didn’t give me a hard time. She said, well it sure would be nice to see you guys, but I understand.

It is not about being mean, or controlling…it’s about doing what YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND want to do. It’s not about toys, etc…it’s about that. I pray that your husband will tell her no this year…and that you’lre planning a quiet time at home. She is more than welcome to come over…but, you’re not making the journey. She’ll get over it, and if she doesn’t…you can’t control that. It’s not about you both, it’s about issues she has with being in control, and feeling the holidays are all about her. They’re not. They’re about Christ. My sister was the same way–the holidays are not all about me jumping through hoops to prove I love her, or whatever. Those days are done! I love my sister, we’re closer than ever now…but we see each other when it’s convenient for US BOTH. Not just for her. Not just for me. She respects me now. Your MIL doesn’t respect you, or your dh’s plans for the holidays…but don’t show, and stick to your guns, she will soon realize that it’s not all about her, and that’s OKAY. I will hold you guys in my prayers for a calm Christmas! ;)*

OH my goodness!! This sounds just like ‘our situation’. I’m really happy to know that you stood firm, and did what is BEST for you and your family. 👍 That’s what’s important, right? Us being a family w/out the stress is what’s important and her being all about ‘me, me, me! Come see me!’’ is not!
Thanks for telling me this because it really sounds exactly like what we are dealing w/, it’s pure selfishness in my opinion seeing how we’re the ones jumping thru hoops every single year to PLEASE her and then on top of it TOLD to make a list and then to be told ‘nope, your list isn’t what I’ll buy.’ Thanks again for sharing your story w/ me, ‘Whatevergirl.’ 😉 :hug1:
DId I forget to mention earlier that we are not to discuss religion around this family either?? So why the heck are we going to celebrate CHRISTmas w/ people that won’t let us talk about CHRIST???**

*lol–you’re kidding? Ugh. So, they are not Catholic?

I think that you really just need to NOT go one year. But you have to be willing (you meaning your husband lol) to face the music. I was ‘‘ready’’ by the time I made the decision. My dh always left the decision up to me, he didn’t care for my sister back then, but he left it up to me. He felt badly for me, that I was always stressed out.

You have to picture a scale…put the stress on one side and your MIL’s feelings on the others. If really, you dh and the kids are stressed to the gills, you should stay at home. I think your dh feels caught in the middle, I get that. But, you get what you accept. If you keep caving every time she bellows, or cries, or whatever…you’ll always have this problem every year. Gosh, holidays should be a time of holiness, fun, and family. So often, the real dynamics of a family will unravel during the holidays…your MIL is probably hurting inside. Unaware to a degree of the angst she is causing. I don’t believe that my sister was happy back then when my kids were little, so her behavior poured out over everyone.

When I sent her an email about not being able to see her for Christmas this year, she didn’t reply…I didn’t hear from her for a while. I sent her another email…unrelated to Christmas, and she responded…’‘I’m disappointed you can’t come for Christmas…“Bob” will be in town.’’ (her son) I was always close to my nephews, she went on to say, how he was looking forward to seeing me. Well, he can get into a rental car, and drive to see me.😛 This is the same guy who is now 26, teaching at a university, and is too busy to ever write me an email. But, when it’s convenient for him, he wants to see me. Don’t get me wrong, I love my family. But, they self centered and only think about what works for THEM. I try to see other’s needs, but at this point in my life, I do what is in the best interest of my husband and kids. If my extended family gets upset, sadly, I don’t let it bother me anymore. I only share this with you, to say…YOU ARE NOT ALONE. You have to break the cycle of this…because Christmas isn’t about stress, and jumping through hoops. It’s about the love of Christ, and the Light of Christ coming into the world. It’s isn’t about mother in laws getting their own way, and buying out Walmart. Your husband is the only one that can change this though–you get what you accept, remember that! :o*

The one thing I’ll say mamacita, is this, though. If you must go (haha):p, make the best of it. Compared to serious things in life, this really (I know it doesn’t seem so) falls way at the bottom. It is stressful…but only as much as you permit it to get to you. :o You can control that part of the whole thing. Know that in the grand scheme of life, God may be asking you to grow in patience, in this one area. Never know. I eventually started looking at things like that with my own family, years ago. Which is why I could let go, and not get upset about it anymore. God bless! Hang in there.

well, if you refuse to go, and she throws a hissy fit and says “no presents” then you’ve solved two problems 😉

My mil is the same way about presents. To her, its not a present unless its in a box under the tree. One year she bought both my girls a Barbie jeep. Oops, they will be left out in the garage for them to go out and see, so they don’t qualify as presents. So then she bought each of them a new (expensive) bike. Still can’t be wrapped, so she bought a TON of toys and wrappable stuff. She put them in a huge Santa sack, all individually wrapped. One huge Santa sack for each girl. Each gift pulled out of the sack could have been a very nice present all on its own. (We’re talking $30-$50 range) But pulling wrapped presents out of a sack was “fun”. She spent well over $1000 on each girl that year.

One time she was going shopping and I knew she would come home with bags of stuff for them…no occasion, just that she was going shopping. I asked her please don’t buy anything for them, they didn’t need anything. This is what she said to me. “Its not what they NEED, its what I WANT TO BUY” Allrighty then, can’t argue with that or try to knock some sense into her. At that point, things come into the house, things go out of the house. “You can keep what Grandma just bought you and get rid of something else, or you can let someone else enjoy this new whatever”

I so know where you are coming from. If all else fails, if hubby refuses to stay home, you can let him go by himself. 👍

**Arlene, YES! You do know exactly where I’m coming from! :o Altho I’m sorry that you, too, have to deal w/ this.

Whatevergrl, THey ARE Catholic however we’re told not to discuss religion in their home. One of their DS’s is a fallen away Catholic (I don’t even think he considers himself Christian anymore, I know he’s said he doesn’t believe in organized religion:shrug:). So, we might ‘offend’ him if we discuss Christ. However, it’s ok for him to offend us by bringing their dogs in the house (MIL’s) when my DS is severely allergic to dogs to the point of asthma attacks. Funny thing is is that this has been addressed to MIL time and time again. Guess what? SHE won’t tell him 'no you’re dogs aren’t welcome here, put them at someone else’s house" instead she TOLD my DH, “you talk to him about it, it’s between him and you.” So what the heck? SHE doesn’t walk all over or control that son but she does us?? IT’S her house and she can’t say “no dogs”?? But we can have our son get sick and end up in the ER (that’s what happened last year after going to Christmas) sigh 😦 I didn’t know the dogs were more important than my son. 🤷

So add that to the issue of her telling us to be there every year, what time to be there, controlling our lists, no talk of Christ, and then the dogs that make my son sick as all get out…makes for a great time, let me tell you.**

*bolded for emphasis, mine.

Again, you get what you ACCEPT. This son doesn’t accept it, so she gives in. Stop accepting her behavior, and you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised. :o He’s not ‘better’ or anything…he just doesn’t ACCEPT it. ;)*

In my opinion, this seems to be more of an issue between YOU and YOUR HUSBAND rather than you and mil. Either it’s important enough to him to stand up to her or it isn’t. But the ball is in his court.

Yes, the ball is in HIS court and he seems to push it aside rather than dribble it so to speak. 😦 It’s frustrating for me as his wife because like I said before he’s so passive to everything it’s terrible a lot of times. The issue is not so much him and I as it is him not standing up to her. He KNOWS what needs to be done, it’s that he doesn’t DO it.🤷 He sees me stressed out (which esp. isn’t good while pregnant) and doesn’t care I guess…🤷

No, she didn’t even speak w/ him about the dogs (yes, it’s 2) because she is scared that he won’t come around if she confronts him (yes, she acts almost afraid of him, it’s sad).
This same son just had a baby in July. He didn’t have it baptized Catholic (obviously) however I think the baby should be baptized something, no? She won’t even bring up the subject to the son, how bad is that (she’s afraid he won’t come around if she brings it up? Like being silent is the best option here? She sure doesn’t do that to us.🤷

I think we really are related…maybe you are my fourth cousin twice removed or something lol 😃 Seriously, my sister has two sons, and one sister (me). Now, she raised me from the time I was nine and on…so she has always been ‘‘like’’ a mom to me. That said, she fears a bit the oldest son…the younger one, she lays guilt trips on…and me, she used to do that the worst with. I stopped tolerating it, and now it’s her youngest who gets the brunt. I don’t know if she fears her oldest, but he has told her off before. So, perhaps she does fear him. That said, however way you slice this, your MIL does it to your husband, because he accepts it. Seriously, it’s that simple. When I stopped accepting it from my sister, she stopped. She acts up every now and then, but she knows that I’m not going to jump through hoops, or be treated like my family comes second to her desires. To be honest, she has changed since her divorce, for the better, in this regard. It’s not that bad anymore, but what I’m offering to you is that on some level your MIL KNOWS that your BIL won’t tolerate the behavior. She knows your husband will. Now, not saying to cause her to fear you guys, but I’d stop jumping through the hoops–plain and simple. She’s his mother, but a man leaves his mom, and clings to his wife. That’s it. She needs to stop being unreasonable. She might be exercising unsual control with you both, because of the utter lack of it she has with her other son. That said, why does she need to control ANYBODY? The irony about people who are controlling, is that people don’t want to be around them. The very thing they fear (people abandoning them), they cause. :o

If you must go, drink lots of spiked egg nog. :rotfl: I’m just trying to make you laugh. :hug1:*

Wait, you’re pregnant…nix the spiked egg nog. Eat lots of pie. 😃

The very thing they fear (people abandoning them), they cause*. :o

If you must go, drink lots of spiked egg nog. :rotfl: I’m just trying to make you laugh. :hug1:

Whatevergirl, this really rang a bell in my mind. It really set off a red flag for me. Since I’ve met DH, I can’t even tell you how many women MIL has talked about as being her ‘friend’ and months later I’d say (to be nice and make conversation), “so how’s so and so doing? I don’t hear you talk about them anymore?” It’s always, “Oh, I don’t hear from her anymore…” followed by silence. Now I know why after all these years. Really is sad if you think about it. :o I know she is very vocal about her ‘opinions’ on everything (such as one time DH made some breakfast sausage at her house and it had ‘sage’ in it which he didn’t know she didn’t like, she said “eewww, that has sage in it? I hate sage! I won’t be eating it!” It was going to be biscuits w/ sausage gravy is what he was making)…not that it’s bad to dislike stuff, but to hurt someone’s feelings that is cooking for you is sorta rude, me thinks… 🤷 I dunno, but if I don’t like something someone cooked, etc. etc. I def. try to keep it to myself.**
