Any way you can contact the Gold Star Moms, Marie? I think it is a good idea to take this to court and clear the air. It is not about freedom of speech. Freedom of speech has limits on it. This is about boundaries. Sheehan violated the boundaries of our war dead. She appropriated their good name for a cause they did not support.

Any people bringing the suit will have to have ‘standing.’ That is they will have to demonstrate that the names of their war dead were misappropriated by Sheehan or by those working in league with Sheehan. It might be best to start with those Gold Star parents.

I suspect they are already in trouble with the IRS. Their group, “Gold Star Mothers for Peace” is supposedly a 510(c)(3) corp and accordingly is not allowed to participate in politics in any way shape or form. Their attack Ads on Bush are politcs. I know I will get some flack form the Sheeniacs on this but the IRS is very strict about this-I know from experience as I do a lot of consulting work with non-profits.

They should have incorporated as a section 527 group but then contributions to them wouldnt have been tax deductible,It appears they want their cake and eat it too.

The REAL Gold Star Mothers are upset becuase they are afraid that the Sheeniacs are puting their non-profit status at risk and becuase they are using a name they have spent 81 years building up. I suspect the most faomous Gold Star Mother of all-Mrs. Sullivan, is spinning in her grave over how the Sheeniacs have smeared an organization that was so dear to her.

It is interesting that the MM is giving this so much attention given there are many more Gold Star Mothers who support the war than not and given Ms Sheehan has an apporval raiting of 35%. But then things have been so bad for the left lately they seem to take solace in tha fact anyone supports them.

This is NOT the definition of capitalism. How do you earn your living?

I could also have cited the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which, after condemning the totalitarianism and atheism associated with communism and socialism, instructs us as follows in this key passage:

***"She [the Church] has likewise refused to accept, in the practice of ‘capitalism,’ individualism and the absolute primacy of the law of the marketplace over human labor [John Paul II’s encyclical Centesimus annus is cited here]. Regulating the economy solely by centralized planning perverts the basis of social bonds; regulating it solely by the law of the marketplace fails social justice, for ‘there are many human needs which cannot be satisfied by the market’ **Centesimus annus]. Reasonable regulation of the marketplace and economic initiatives, in keeping with a just hierarchy of values and a view to the common good, is to be commended" (section 2425).

In the above passage, please note how the Catholic Church defines capitalism.

Why is this so difficult to understand? Whereas Totalitarianism and socialism are SYSTEMS that are outright condemned over and over by the Church(as you rightly noted above), the Catechism goes on to explain what is wrong regarding abuses within Capitalism. The Church is in NO WAY defining capitalism here or condemning it as a system. The Church is rejecting abuses which could occur within ANY system.

Am. Gold Star Mothers:
We have thought a lot of what our possibilities can be, however since she is not using our name AMERICAN GOLD STAR MOTHERS.INC. she has not violated any law.

It is just that most people do not take the time to listen and investigate all the various names that are being used, and link both groups together. We have considered getting advise from an attorney just in case we need to take some formal action, which we would prefer not to do. Our resourses are not deep pockets.

Right. American Gold Stars Moms Inc does not have standing. But the survivors of those war dead whose names were used may have standing. I suspect strongly that they do. If they do and if the parents are interested we can always find an attorney to work pro bono. It would set a precedent for behaviour which go a long way to healing some very old wounds among vets and survivors.
 
I wonder if those parents who did not want thier kids’s names put on crosses could sue?

I don’t know, but I sure would like to find a way to do it. I’ll have to see what I can come up with. Maybe the Thomas Moore Law Center would have some ideas.

The original article had some names of parents. That would be the first step.
