…and in the end - one of those wives of mohammed poisoned him. poetic justice.

The big problem though isn’t necessarily a disturbed individual like mohammed - but all the ones who so willingly follow a guy like him. But, it is more common than not for people to follow such guys. There are examples in our own age - Stalin, Hitler, mao, etc. Way too many (mostly) men following these creeps and killing their own (mostly). While in mohammed and his followers case they have killed a lot of their own and many more non-muslims.

Jeremy, I have this problem when speaking to some people about Islam. They already are assuming the worst, and it becomes my job to show them how Islam is better than what they have thought.

But sometimes I don’t realize how bad those assumptions have really become. It seriously doesn’t occur to me naturally how evil some people think Islam is. Perhaps that’s why I’m not being understood, that I am not taking into account the depth of those assumptions.
So what is the difference between not being allowed to deny your husband “without a good reason” and your husband getting sex whenever he wants on demand? Maybe “force” is a bit of a strong word to use, but the dimension of this sort of relationship that I am trying to emphasize is the wife’s inability to say “no”.
The assumption here is, I guess, that a woman actually isn’t allowed to say “no.” That’s what you’ve said. And forgive me if I’ve let you believe that–but it’s not true. The woman can of course say no. She shouldn’t, however, without a good reason. Saying she shouldn’t doesn’t mean she’s forbidden from it, ok? But there are consequences of it–if she angers her husband by saying no, by refusing him without any good reason, then there a hadith that the angels will curse her. Because in essence while she is asserting what you call the right to say no, she is also denying her husband his marital rights. So it is something to be taken very seriously, for the woman to understand that. And since it’s usually men who are talking to men about this issue (women wouldn’t be so public about it), you don’t get that complete picture I guess.
If you are indulging your husband even when you “don’t feel like it” (which you admitted you would do), then I suppose the issue of force need not come into play, as you already willfully forefeit your right to intimacy on equal terms in the relationship.
I actually take that offensively. The rights to intimacy are equal. The wife has just as much a right to intimacy with her husband as he has! This is another assumption, I suppose, that the rights are not equal, that the man is not also held accountable to his wife. But as I said, both husband and wife are entitled to intimacy with their spouse, and to not be refused without a good reason.
And then what about those times when you don’t want to and you have what you feel is a good reason? If he is accustomed to getting what he wants whenever he wants regardless of your feelings, how do you think he will react to your protestations?
I think that he will bear it much lighter than otherwise, understanding that it must be very serious for me to refuse him, and that I am not being careless of his rights in the relationship. I mean, if after 2 weeks straight of intercourse and I’m feeling sick one night, I don’t think he’d be too upset. Whereas if I totally refused him for 2 weeks and then actually felt sick one night… it would be one more night after being refused and I think it’d tick him off. (Two extremes, I know, but I’m making a point.)

Continued below…

Because not being allowed to say no effectively gives the husband the context to demand sex whenever he wants? The point is the denial of the wife’s right to say no without a “good reason” (whatever that is; does she get to decide what that is?)
Ultimately it is between her and Allah–she doesn’t have to justify it to her husband. But she should know that if she refuses him and angers him because of that, then her punishment is with Allah. She does have the right to refuse her husband if she has a good reason. But otherwise, she shouldn’t. That doesn’t mean the husband is forcing her. She should be willing. Men who rape their wives have serious issues that I think some people (Muslims, in particular) refuse to acknowledge. But there is absolutely no way you can tell me that Islam allows a man to force his wife–it’s just absurd.
So…if you do not indulge your husband even when you don’t feel like being intimate with him, it will effectively force him into the arms of another woman?
You would not be physically forcing him out of the house and into the arms of another, so much as the context of the situation could cause him to seek physical affection elsewhere.
That’s right. I would quite literally however be pushing him away from me. Forcing him away from me. Where does a man go when pushed away from his wife? Not necessarily to another woman but I think it’s likely.
Similarly, in “forcing” his wife to have sex by denying her right to say no, the man might not need to lift a finger. Manipulation can go a long way.
Not sure what you’re on about. If his wife obliges him, what is the problem?
Really, if you want to live by these Islamic precepts in your possible/eventual marriage, that’s fine. The only reason I’m even continuing in this thread is that it seemed to me that you were advancing the idea that the Islamic idea of marriage is somehow what would be best for non-Muslims as well, as in this part of post #66:
Sure, I do. I think that the rules and rights of marriage cannot be invented by men (or women.) I think that only the Almighty has the knowledge and wisdom to teach humans how to live in a marriage, and I will trust the Most Wise.
This is what I was saying “whatever” to. Islamic marriages will prevent cheating, divorces, etc. but only because,Islam avoids these things by codifying infidelity via polygamy (and according to this cleric you are in agreement with, forced sex).
Nothing I’ve said nor anything the cleric said has allowed “forced sex.” Moreover, polygamy is not necessarily infidelity, and I haven’t brought up polygamy either. That a man might take another wife is one thing, but it’s much simpler in American society to just take a mistress. To just meet a girl somewhere. All too easy, I’m sorry to say. What rights do those girls have, I wonder… hm.
These things are perhaps in your future, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to let you trash the Christian idea of marriage because many Americans don’t take marriage seriously. In a marriage of two non-idiots (regardless of their religion), the consideration of the other does not preclude the free exercise of personal choice in keeping with ones own emotional health or conscience, but includes it.
I’m not sure why you assume that marriage in Islam somehow prohibits husbands from being considerate to their wives. Did you know that Muhammad told his Companions to never approach their wives without some kind of foreplay first?
In the picture of intimacy within Islamic marriage that you are painting, that does not seem to be a bedrock principle.
Assumptions again?

I have no problem with arranged marriage though that may not be the practice today with young people. But I do not have objection to arranged marriage if the parties concerned agree to it. I object though if it is done against their will.

As for Mohammad being role model for husbands, I beg to differ and many wives, and yes, that include Muslim wives, do not agree with this statement. I am not surprised that some Muslim women go along with this but personally I think that’s because out of religious obedience rather than to think that Mohammad was a good husband.

The simple fact is that Mohammad was a bad husband! He was good while being married to Khadijah but I suspect his intention then. After Khadijah died he was not what he used to be!

I don’t know about you ladies, but if I were you I certainly would not want to share my husband with a group of younger and more attractive women than I am. That’s what Mohammad exemplified and more, as if four wives is not enough for one man.

Just last month a Muslim wife came to me for counseling because her husband was ignoring her and having an affair with another woman whom he wanted to marry. She knew I am Christian but out of desperation (she’s a friend of my wife) she just wanted someone to talk to. It was without the knowledge of her husband. Now they are living in the same house but without talking to each other because this lady (wife) cannot accept that her husband should take anther wife. BTW, she is a medical doctor and the husband a pilot in a private airline. They have three beautiful children. Well, I should say this is Mohammad’s legacy, can’t blame the husband. But it has destroyed their happiness.
Taking the issue of polygamy and suggesting that if a man wants another wife he’s just trying to copy Muhammad is really dumb. Muslims do the same thing sometimes and it makes me so mad. Because sometimes a man is not doing a good job with his wife, so he wants another. Or maybe he’s bored. Or some other stupid reason. If he were to follow the example of Muhammad, he would be marrying elderly women who had been divorced or widowed–but typically when we see it, it’s a man marrying someone young and all. Just because a man wants to be polygamous (specifically polygynous) doesn’t mean that he should, or even that is could be according to Islamic law.

So sometimes, yes, you can blame the husband.

And to answer your other point, I absolutely do think Muhammad was the best example of a husband, something I have made clear to every potential husband of mine–that I want him to follow the Sunnah (i.e., the example of Muhammad) in regards to marriage. From the day he married Khadeejah to the day he died.

But do you know from whom we learn most about Muhammad as a husband? Was it from his beloved wife Khadeejah? Nope! It was from 'A’isha! She described to us how he was as a husband (as did, to a lesser degree, some of his other wives.) They described him being gentle and patient with them, and helping them with the housework, and so on. He really was an ideal husband, and having several wives did not diminish that.

BTW, aren’t you being less than honest here? Even Aisha, his favorite wife testified that she got beat by him (Mohammad). Unless you want to tell me that this hadeeth is not authentic too.
He poked her in the chest once. That’s hardly a beating.

We can’t say for sure about the other wives because not all things were being disclosed. But the verse allowing husband to beat his wife is his very own, and if he beat Aisha the favorite young thing how can we possibly exclude that he did not beat the older ones if they didn’t toe his line? And as Planten said, he liked to set the example himself.
We know what he did when they didn’t “toe the line” as you put it. Sometimes he got quite angry at them.

But he never beat them.

The Qur’an:

Sura (4:34) - “Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.”

Bukhari (72:715) - A woman came to Muhammad and begged her to stop her husband from beating her. Her skin was bruised so badly that she it is described as being “greener” than the green veil she was wearing. Muhammad did not admonish her husband, but instead ordered her to return to him and submit to his sexual desires.

Narrated Abdullah ibn AbuDhubab:

Iyas ibn Abdullah ibn AbuDhubab reported the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) as saying: Do not beat Allah's handmaidens, but when Umar came to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) and said: Women have become emboldened towards their husbands, **he (the Prophet) gave permission to beat them.** Then many women came round the family of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) complaining against their husbands. So the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: Many women have gone round Muhammad's family complaining against their husbands. They are not the best among you.

Jeremy, I have this problem when speaking to some people about Islam. They already are assuming the worst, and it becomes my job to show them how Islam is better than what they have thought.
Well, I’d like to think that’s not me to begin with, but maybe it is with regard to this particular issue. I don’t know. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions anyway.
OK.

If you back to the original news story at the start of the thread, the cleric says that even if the woman is busy doing something else, she is to drop whatever she is doing in order to engage in intercourse with her husband because he wants it. So presumably "I’m busy is not in the category of “good reasons”. What IS considered a good reason (and why) ought to go a long way to resolving my apparent misunderstandings of the true Islamic position.
But there are consequences of it–if she angers her husband by saying no, by refusing him without any good reason, then there a hadith that the angels will curse her.
So angels apparently decide or are informed as to what is a “good” reason? Do they then communicate their decision to the husband or what? I’m confused as to how/why angels are involved in this.
I see. That bit makes sense in a way. Both must have their rights respected. I think most of what I am objecting to is not that the husband might tell his wife “I think it is part of the health of our marriage that you are responsive to me physically and I to you; if you are not, it worries me, and I feel you do not respect me or our marriage.” This I think would be a very respectful way and reasonable way to approach the issue. What I am objecting to is this idea that the wife should simply submit to her husband physically even if she really doesn’t want to, because it is his right within the marriage to have sex whenever he wants. If that is the case (and now I’m going to try to resume using lots of qualifiers, so that you don’t get the idea that I think my assumptions about Islam are reality; I don’t), then how can either husband or wife be secure in the state of their relationship? I think we can all either recall or imagine stories from friends, relatives, or even our own lives when we stopped feeling emotionally connected to our husband/wife/fiancee and our relationships suffered as a result. This is the problem I have with the idea of “rights” in the way that you have defined them (I’m thinking of our “right/obligation to love” conversation from a while ago, if you remember that) being recognized over the desires of either party. It may be my right to physical intimacy with my wife, but if she always obliges me even though she doesn’t want to, I don’t think it is too crazy for both of us to start resenting one another for this (me for her begrudging sort of attitude; she for my callousness).
I apologize for having offended you, but I must maintain that it is very difficult for me to see the equality of the situation here. Perhaps if there had been an example of a talk given to Muslimahs about their rights over their husband that included rights to hit them if they are disobedient in this area, I might feel differently (though I recognize why I will never see such an example, even if it does exist). It seems like in practice, with man’s libido being as it is, there can be very little doubt as to who will be most often called upon to submit to marital relations even when they don’t want to.

One thing strikes me as odd, and maybe this is a dumb question, but I’ll ask it anyway because I’m curious: Why can rights not be framed in a two-way manner? Meaning, why can it not be both the husband’s and the wife’s right to ask for or refuse sex as they see fit? Would that not work because the husband’s desire for sex is probably more “constant” (for lack of a better way to phrase it) than the wife’s, so his desires would go unfulfilled more often than hers?

If that is the case (and, without being crude, imperical evidence from both being a man and having many male friends would suggest that it is), is this not implicit recognition that the man’s “rights” do have primacy over those of the wife simply because he wants sex more often than she does?

Why is sex on request a right, but celibacy on request is not?

Amy,
There is going to be a point in your life when your married, and trying to go to sleep, then all of a sudden your husband wants to have sex with you. You will then know what it feels like to ‘not feeling like having sex’.
When you get that feeling and say to your husband, i dont feel like having sex because im tired, are you going to react when he a) beats you for saying that b) be made to have sex against your will?
Been beaten and forced to have sex (aka rape) is not a nice feeling, yet you condone these actions.
When your faced with this, i wish you well, and hope you can get through the scars of it. I dont wish this on anyone, but yet, this is something you will most likely be faced with, i hope not, but you may be.

the liklihood is indeed higher in the situation that she has chosen to be in.

It will usually be when she has a kid or two - and she will find out what tired really is.

Ultimately it is between her and Allah–she doesn’t have to justify it to her husband.
Hmm. Okay. This is a confusing situation to me, but I’m willing to accept it as Islamic reasoning.
But she should know that if she refuses him and angers him because of that, then her punishment is with Allah.
If Allah knows whether she is offering a good reason or not (knows her true intention, I suppose, regardless of whether she shares it with her husband), why would it matter how the husband reacts? You just said that she needn’t justify herself to him.

She does have the right to refuse her husband if she has a good reason. But otherwise, she shouldn’t. That doesn’t mean the husband is forcing her. She should be willing. As you might guess, I cannot and do not even for a second agree with this.

It is very sad, isn’t it, the ease with which people in the USA and other Western countries may dishonor their marriage vows. I know you won’t like this, but I can’t think of anything to say other than this is one area where both Islam and American society are definitely wrong. Of course that’s easy for me to say since I do not feel ultimate allegiance to either…
I’m not sure why you assume that marriage in Islam somehow prohibits husbands from being considerate to their wives. Did you know that Muhammad told his Companions to never approach their wives without some kind of foreplay first?
Yes, I have read that before. And I actually said that mutual respect in the way I am envisioning it (admittedly biased towards my understanding of what my own religion says about marriage and love, but who isn’t?) does not seem to be a bedrock principle, not that it flat-out does not exist in Muslim marriages. That would be an unfair generalization, but that is not what I said nor what I intended.
Assumptions again?
Yes, both yours and mine. How’s that for equality? 😛

In all seriousness, Sister Amy, I do really appreciate you taking the time to reply to my post. We may never see eye to eye on certain things, but I am glad you are willing to discuss these things with me anyway. I am sorry if I have offended you at any point.

Sometimes pictures speak louder than words.

Why muslim women wear the veil:

here is a before and after set:

Canada has to tell muslims not to kill women

There are so many articles and pictures of women who have had acid thrown at them, burned, beaten, and I won’t post the ones that show them being stoned.
Sorry, I delete the picture for saving space. Looking at the picture of the Arabic woman. Wow. For a pretty woman like her, I would dare not even to touch her.

In this tafsir, the men have the absolute expectation of obedience from their wives, and get to determine when she is crossing the line.
Her rights - to be fed, clothed and housed.

The husband’s right over his wife is so enormous - allah would have ordered her to prostrate at the husband’s feet.

Disgusting, tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=4&tid=11037 cult.

The problem that I have been trying to bring out is that their teachings ok it, and their sharia laws don’t do anything about it. and it is all for their god. It is easy for clerics to tell us they disagree with some guy who is preaching that it is ok to beat their wives - but they don’t do anything about sharia laws either to change them. and how can you tell if they are telling us one thing while saying another when we are not watching since deception is sanctioned in the koran?

I wish that all men didn’t beat women (or women doing the same in some instances and they beat their husbands). but there is no maturing of their society, or sharia laws, to realize that this is bad, that there is counseling for such things - and I am not talking about counseling the woman to accept it! But to counsel to have the couple understand why they are doing this and in some cases to take ‘anger management’ courses.

women cannot vote to change sharia laws, and neither can non-muslims vote at all. So, unless the majority of men in their society realize that there is something inherently wrong with beating women - it won’t change. The majority of men are afraid and won’t stand up for women (I am not counting the lone wolf who does and probably ends out dead himself) and why should they? There is no incentive - god says it is ok to beat them… so be it.

muslim woman and sister amy are telling us probably what they wish for. I don’t even think sister amy is married - at least she said she wasn’t last year. And while sister amy resides in the USA we still have laws that would protect her, and safe houses, etc. Those are unknown in muslim lands. And I read in the UK they are now handing back wives who are trying to flee abusive husbands back to them because they are allowing sharia laws to override sensibilities and are cowering to it.

And while muslim women have freedoms in our countries (well, so far) they do nothing to help the plight of muslim women in other countries. Instead they keep defending the indefensible.

We know what he did when they didn’t “toe the line” as you put it. Sometimes he got quite angry at them.

But he never beat them.
How do you know he didn’t beat them since you weren’t there?

both of u committed a major sin . I hope , u 2 will offer your sicere repentance before death approaches.

PS. Don’t say , all Christian men are very gentle & don’t abuse women in the relatioship.
Who are you to judge ME?

I have a personal relationship with God and do not need you to judge me. He was Muslim and I was telling you my experience. Do not tell me that no muslims have sex before they are married because that would be a lie.

Though I have not heard it being said explicitly that Muslims are morally better than Christians, it was nevertheless implied that they do when Muslim Woman, one of Muslim posters here equated Christians with Western society. Her reasoning is that Muslims unlike their Western counterparts do not engage in illicit sex and marriages.

Well, this is one of the greatest misconceptions and generalizations that we ever hear here. The greater tragedy for the unknowing is that they may believe this at all.

You are right. Muslims are just as culpable. They practice pre-marital sex, pregnancies outside marriages and all the things that they accuse non-Muslims do. Their divorce rate is one of the highest if one studies it from inter-ethnic perspective. Single Muslim girls in third world countries who find themselves pregnant would simply throw away foetuses in rubbish dump and drains or at roadside hoping someone would find them and take them to hospitals.

We should be extremely wary if Muslims start saying that they pray better, morally better and have better marriages than Christians because in reality they don’t.

My heart is with many Christian women who have suffered untold abuse by Muslim men. Some of them preferred to keep very low profile because of the trauma they experienced especially over parental objection when they opted for marriages to Muslim men. Why Muslims cannot be ideal husbands is simply because of the way they look at women as inferior to them and to be used as personal possession. The good Muslim husbands that we see are those despite the teaching of Islam.
