I heard yesteday on Revelant Radio that Rich Mullins died on the way to meet with his Catholic Spiritual Director to enter into the Church.
Mullins wanted the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

As far as I am concerned, since he had the ‘desire’ to become Catholic, and died with that in his heart, I consicer him Catholic. Does anybody agree with my statement?

Go with God!

Perhaps have a listen to the late Rich Mullins- from what I understand he was about to convert to Catholicism when he was killed in an auto accident. He’s got some great contemporary Christian tunes- I was thrilled when I heard a line from one of his songs -goes something like “faith without works is like a screen door on a submarine” 😉
Rich Mullins is one of my favorites, as well. I too was surprised to hear that line in Screen Door. (It is so rare to hear anything explicitly pro Catholic in music. I hadn’t even known that there were Catholic artists out there.)I have to say, though, that my 2 favorite songs of his are “Awesome God”, and “If I Stand”. I have the 'Songs" CD, and I’ve just about worn out those 2 in particular.

As for other artists, I really enjoy Michael W. Smith; especially his all instrumental CD. It is just an amazing composition. Beautiful.

Have a great day,
Judy

As a new member of the Catholic family, I find that one of the ways in which our Heavenly father touches me most deeply is through music. I–and many others, I hope–would love to hear about your favorite Catholic ( or non-anti-Catholic Christian) musicians, CDs, songs, sheet music, etc.

Just to get things rolling, my current fascination consists of the first three CDs by mercyme (I said I was new, didn’t I?).

So, what about you? 🙂

I too will no longer be able to sing Here I Am Lord, a former favorite, without now thinking of The Brady’s. The song I have trouble listening to is We Are Many Parts by Marty Haugen. I have never heard it that the cantor or choir didn’t make it sound like there should be the clip-clopping of horses heard while accompanied by a harmonica around the campfire on the Western plains. Except once. Marty Haugen’s own version is a beautifully spiritual piece.

Some hymns are better written than others. If it praises God…it deserves a listen.

My favorite Catholic composer is David Haas. I think everyone would find something they would like on any of his CDs. But, for my money, The “Best of David Haas” volumns one and two are the tops. I don’t know which one is better. They are both excellent. One is called Blest Are They. The other is You Are Mine. Check 'em out.

My daughter is trying to find a contemporary Christian music group, outside of college, she can fit into between that difficult age of post high school and pre adult church choir. If anyone knows of any in the Philadelphia, PA area, let me know.

How Can I Keep From Singing? In Christ…

My favorite Catholic artist is one that hasn’t been listed yet (gasp :)), a young man named Martin Doman. He is a graduate of Franciscan U. in Steubenville, and now brings his music to their immensely popular Steubenville youth conferences-a perfect ministry for him. Most of the songs on his CDs are his own compositions.

Go to Domini Ministries for more info and to hear song clips!

His “Song of Augustine” is my favorite, it is on his first album “Praying Twice”. Here are some of the lyrics:

*O Beauty so ancient, and yet so new

Too late I have known You, too late I have loved You

I stand here in need of Your mercy,

Rebuild me; in You, fill my soul

Let me seek You; my soul thirsts for You

You have made me O God, to live forever in Your love

And my heart will not rest, until it rests in You

Beautiful! 👍

I can’t believe you haven’t heard of Lynn Cooper, she has the voice of an angel!!! She has been performing since she was a little girl, and I had the priviledge of watching and listening to her sing for an entire weekend at the Women of Grace Conference, in April. She has 7 CD’s availible, and her version of “Joy To The World” puts the original lycrics by 3 Dog Night to shame. Her CD “The Praise Goes ON”, has the single “Shout to the Lord”.
**You can find out now about Lynn, and her music at her website, www.LynnCooperMusic.com , check out her music, I promise you won’t be disappointed, her music is totally in line with the teaching of the church, and will make your heart soar with the angels in heaven. **

Lynn Cooper is one of my Catholic favs. My favorite song of hers is “10,000 Angels” which she wrote and composed. You can hear it at www.mp3.com. The album it’s on is ON HIS WINGS. She has another very touching album which is perfect for adoptive families. She was adopted and wrote SONGS FROM THE ROCKING CHAIR; one song is from viewpoint of the biological parents, another from the adoptive parent, and the third song from the baby’s perspective.

Her website is:www.lynncooper.net. She will be singing at the World Youth Convention in August in Toronto. Her music touches and soothes my soul… Veronica S. Lincoln, NE

I see the city lights all around me
Everyone’s obscure
Ten million people each with their problems
Why should anyone care

CHORUS:
And in your eyes I can see
I am not just a man, vastly lost in this world
Lost in a sea of faces
Your body’s the bread, your blood is the wine
Because you traded your life for mine

Sometimes my life it feels so trivial
Immersed in the greatness of space
Yet somehow you still find the time for me
It’s then you show me your love

If only my one heart
Was all you gained from all it cost
Well I know you would have still been a man
With a reason to willingly offer your life

Just one in a million face’s

Now listen here.

Perhaps its that I am just older than dirt, but I figure that if a song was written as late as the 1970’s then to me it is “contemporary”.

We have a bunch of them that we sing at Mass! This is in contrast to the songs of the previous 19 centuries that we sang prior.

Artists like Dan Schutte, David Haas, Marty Haugen, Bob Dufford…

…and…not to forget… Michael Joncas

I feel like a disc jockey or a TV record spokes person.

I just love songs like “You Are Near”, and “Be not Afraid”, and of course “Eagles Wings”

I wished there was people at my parish that had an interest in playing this music in a string arrangement. But NOOOOOO…the organ and piano are good enough.

grrrr…

david haas is really good. i got 2 of his cd’s from GIA publications.

I am a big John Michael Talbot fan myself. I also love Donna Cori Gibson, and Gretchen Harris!

Some great Gregorian Chant stuff out there, great for meditation… if you want to tap your toes and get with it, I highly recommend the BEE GEE’s… 👍

I actually own some Chant CDs and other things like that but I am not always in the mode for that.

Is there anyone out there that has a good suggestion for Catholic music that has a harder edge?

I’m not talking about for Mass or similar venue. Just something to listen to in the car. I have found a few Christian Rockbands that I like (i.e. Third Day) but no Catholic ones.

I like listening to Classic Rock and similar music and occasionally I would like to hear spiritual music with a similar edge.

Most of the Catholic CDs that have been suggested by others before have too much of a “Praise and Worship” side to them for both my and my wife’s taste.
I haven’t found anything worth listening to in this genre. Unfortunately, all the good stuff I’ve found is Contemporary Christian, but not Catholic. (I highly recommend DC Talk…)
