I attend the same parish as Matt Maher who is a Grammy award winning catholic artist. His music is extremely popular with the teens. My wife and I, as well as our five year old love it too. His first cd, The End and The Beginning is very liturgical and is an outstanding cd. His second cd, Welcome to Life is equally as good as his first. My wife and I also like Tom Booth, whose music really has more of a sixties Beatles kinda taste to it. His recent release, Unravel seems like it will appeal to the teen audiance as well. You can check out these and many other catholic artists at www.spiritandsong.com. You can actually here some of the music and even check out some other artists that I didn’t mention. Great music, and it’s catholic too!!!

At work, I listen to www.catholicmusicnetwork.com

There are many genres from folk to standard - parody to rap, all Catholic music.

My son is more into Rap, for his birthday I’ve ordered a Catholic Rap music compilation called Phat Mass

I just bought my daughter Janelle’s new CD off catholicmusicnetwork.com Can’t wait to get it. We had heard her on EWTN and she was at the last world youth day. She just released a single that she wrote for Pope John Paul, beautiful!
I have heard some of Steven Curtis Chapman’s stuff and it is pretty good BUT he isn’t Catholic so I haven’t purchased it for myself. I worry about my daughter (only 8) hearing Protestant messages in the music so I am very selective

I really like Switchfoot & MXPX, they’re both really good Christian bands. I also like Rachael Lampa, she’s a really good Catholic singer and she’s been acknowledged by the Pope! 👍

Here’s an interview w/ Rachael Lampa from *
[
catholicrock.com/cath/cathreg91.html](http://www.catholicrock.com/cath/cathreg91.html):*

Rachael Lampa ia a Christian music superstar who also happens to be a charismatic Catholic. This may come as a surprise to many Evangelical Christians as her Catholic heritage has been very much in the background of her incredible rise to the top of the Christian music charts. Starting with the adult pop sound of “Live for You” and progressing through “Kaleidoscope” to the teen-pop dance-remix sound of “Blur”, Rachael Lampa has shown herself to be a force to be reckoned with in CCM.

David: Can you tell how you were discovered?

Rachael: I always wanted to be a singer. I got a chance to go up to Estes Park in Colorado for Seminar in the Rockies where a lot of Christian artists go to be discovered. I actually didnt know what it was but they asked me to sing at this caf at midnight and I got a record deal that night.

David: And how old were you?

Rachael: I was 14 and the first CD came out when I was 15.

David: The Catholic world first heard you on the 2000 World Youth Day CD singing a duet with the legendary Aaron Neville. What was that like?

Rachael: It was so unexpected. I remembered his totally distinct voice. I got to go down to New Orleans and hang with him. He had these cool Rosary bracelets and he gave me a whole bunch to hand out to my family. It was a cool and special experience.

David: Can you tell me a little about your conversion experience?

Rachael: My whole life, I was aware of God. I knew He was there. I would pray to Him. It was actually at a Steubenville conference in the rockies two days before Estes Park. On the last night of the conference, they asked us to sit by ourselves away from our friends and just have a talk with God. I was a good girl at school and didnt get into any crazy stuff and I thought that was all I had to do. But I told God I was bored. I wanted to do things especially for God and not only just be a good girl. I want to be bigger and louder about it. I really wanted to live for God.

Dave: Have you ever been challenged for your Catholic beliefs by the Evangelicals in the CCM industry?

Rachael: I’ve gotten a few people who like to say things that are uneducated about what they are asking or criticizing about. If anything, it has challenged me to learn more about what I believe in. It was more at the beginning when people were skeptical about me as an artist and as a person. Lately, its been fine. There are Catholics that have a really deep personal relationship with God and thats all that matters. Thats what ties all Christians together. We all love Christ and we all love God. I hope that I can have something to do with people uniting.

Dave; Do you see yourself as a role model?

Rachael. I guess so. There are a lot of people that write me letters and ask me questions at shows. A lot of them are young kids and girls.

Dave: What would you like to say to our youth? Rachael: Just be loud and unashamed. Come to the realization that nothing makes more sense than to serve God. Turn to Him and dont try to figure things out yourself. Theres a verse that I really love (Proverbs 3:5-6) “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight”.

My favorite artists of that genere are

Stephen Curtis Chapman
Phil Joel
Millenium III
Chris Rice
Matthew West (VERY good and speaks well to social issues of teens and young people…look up his song “The Lie”)
Carol Adens(sp)
Newsboys
and many more…

I am a teen, so I guess I should give my opinion. For Rap, I suggest the Apologist, and Father Stan Fortuna. If you are looking for inspirational or something a little calmer, Rich Mullins did a variety of styles. THen there is Daniels Window for rock, and some with a Celtic taste to it is Cieli Rain. And for a pop type (i think) I like Johnathan Pierce. THen theres classics, like Charlotte Church for opera as well as Andre Bocelli, though he sings in Italian. That’s what I listen to, as well as classical music.

For the Tweens - I recommend.

Pop:
Jump 5
4 HIM
Stacie Orrico
Jaci Velasquez

Rock :
Superchick !
Newsboys
Audio Adreneline
Switchfoot

Singer/Songwriter :
Ginny Owens
Chris Rice
Andrew Peterson

In addition to some already mentioned:

POP
Tom Booth (Catholic)
Caedmon’s Call (Christian)

also, you might look into

Kemper Crabb - Christian, not pop but I know quite a few tween age KC fans.

Atomic Opera - Christian Metal, an odd combination but many like it. One of the members (at least) is Catholic.

I just got a new cd of K4J (Kids for Jesus) Some of the sweetest kids songs.
There is a song called My Best Friend it was so moving that I am going to have the first Communion children sing it. It talks about the Mass and the Eucharist and how Jesus is our best friend. The 2nd graders love to sing it so much when we went to the Chapel today they wanted to sing it to Jesus, I thought well we usually have a cd but we can try it. It was so beautiful the little voices singing so sweetly to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and how they wanted to receive Jesus in the Host. I wanted to cry listening to them. I could only look up at the Crucifix but for an instant it was as you could see Jesus smile.

I too am a big fan of Completely by Critical Mass, love anything by John Michael Talbot, and Andrea Bocelli’s Sacred Arias.

Some of my other favorites, Donna Cori Gibson, Gretchen Harris, Tony Melendez and Aaron Neville’s Believe (great tunes!). And as I mentioned on another thread, if you are looking for good Catholic parody tunes, check out Nick Alexander. (nickalexander.com)
