My kids are at the age that they are interested in music.
I know there is lots of christian music out there.Is it okay to listen to general christian music or should they listen to catholic artists? Do you have any suggestions. P.S. they do not like rap or country.

I listen to regular Christian music all of the time. I really like the WOW cds. There are different kinds of music like praise and worship, or just regular christian pop, rock, rap etc.

I really like Plus One, Mary Mary, Newsboys, DCtalk.

Tom Booth has great Catholic music…also Spirit and Song is a collection of great Catholic music

My old parish sings regular Christian music at their teen/young adult Mass. I love it and I’m constantly looking for a parish like that, close to me.
 
I think it depends. We went to Cornerstone (a christian woodstock, if you will) one year. I really liked one band and bought their cd. When I got home and actually read the lyrics of some of the other songs I found they were anti-Catholic. I think you will still need to monitor what they are listening to. Just because the label says “christian” doesn’t mean it won’t cause confusion or rebellion.

One of my favorites is Jennifer Knapp (a few years back now, but she has alot of soul & can rock).
 
How old are the kids and do they like anything in particular - you only told us what they don’t like. My kids are 7 and 10. They like to listen to the Contemporary Christian station in the car. They sing along. Of course, it helps that I am less likely to change the channel in mid song.

Jump Five is really teeny bopper and Atomic Opera is heavy metal but both are Christian Bands (actually one of the AO members is Catholic). There is everything in between too. As was already mentioned, you need to be careful about some of the lyrics. But we have to be careful about some of the lyrics at Mass too. :confused: As long as you are prepared to explain any conflicts, you should be ok.

My kids like: Mercy Me, Audio Adenaline, Rachel Lampa (Catholic), Tom Booth (Catholic), Jars of Clay and Atomic Opera.

I do listen to “generic” Christian music in the car, we have a local KLOVE (www.klove.com) station. Many priests in the area listen to it as well!
 
I would have to listen to the cd before allowing my daughter to listen to it. They are easily confused and messages in songs can be so powerful. She is only 8 so for now I keep it Catholic unless I have heard it and found it to be ok. BUT I think it is tremendously important to support our Catholic artists.
Janelle is an incredible Catholic artist, sounds like main stream but she is all Catholic. My daughter LOVES her. she has been on EWTN and was at world youth day as well. Her recent single she has out is a tribute to Pope John Paul. Now that’s what I want my daughter singing about!!!

Liking hip hop, you shuold check out Fr. Stan Fortuna. Fr. Stan performs a various range of music, traditional up to hip hop. He does hip hop to use this genre to make Catholic teaching and ideals reachable to their ears.

Listening to other Christian forms of music is good, however, you need to listen to know whether the lyrics coincide with the teaching of the Catholic Church. Some artists sing about the joy and praise of God, which is excellent, but if they sing about sola scriptura, or sola fida, then No. I heard these comments also talked about on one of the ETWN OPEN LINE programs withinthe last two weeks, either John Martingino’s or Marcus Grodi’s programs.

I grew up with The Hi God! series and Glory & Praise series of music. Hi God! is more Christian as G&P is Catholic.
 
I suggest Matt Maher. Especially his latest release CD album, Welcome to Life.
Ceili Rain is also good. They play an Irish rock.
Tom Booth is another Catholic artist. I’ve only heard one of his songs though.
