I do not want to join an argument, but as a citizen in the West, and as a Christian, I can tell you that Jesus Christ is blasphemed in every way possible in our society, and yet the Christian community is calm and collected in their response. Yet Mohammed (who is not even God by the way), was simply DRAWN in comic strips, it results in animalistic and barbaric behavior from Muslims all around the world. Now I will admit, many Muslims spoke out against it, but it does not change the fact that LARGE numbers of Muslims resorted to this type of behavior as a reponse, and in some of Islam’s most deeply rooted places. Now if these people are devout in their faith, wouldn’t they of all people know the teachings of Islam? How is it that they still managed to react out of context in such a way that it resulted in deaths of innocent people? I will give credit to those Muslims who spoke out against it, but it doesn’t change the fact that there is a big misconception even within the crowds of the Muslim public about their own faith.
The people you saw on the media were definitely not the majority. There is about 1.2 billion Muslims in the world. Why the media only chose to show them, don’t ask me. However they were definitely only a small handful of people who are uneducated and acting out of emotion.

He is a priest? :bigyikes: Yea, I thought you are supposed to be teaching people to turn the other cheek? Do you have scripture to back up your stance Mr?

😃
Many people have misunderstood Jesus’ teaching about “turn the other cheek”. In Jewish culture at the time, when you were slapped on the right cheek, it was the highest form of rebuke for “blasphemy”. Basically what Jesus was saying when He said “turn the other cheek” was “give them your left and your right cheek because you are not a blasphemer but follow Me.” This would fit in well with His other statements which say “I come not to bring peace, but a sword” and He told His followers to sell their coat if they didn’t have one and buy a sword. Of course defending ourselves is a Christian’s right and duty and many misrepresent Jesus’ teaching here and call him a pacifist. He was no pacifist and used physical violence against the money changers and the hypocrites in the Temple (His house).

:banghead: Every Christian tells me something different. It seems like every Christian has his own form of Christianity.

Emad, this is a Catholic forum, not a Christian. If you want to know what we believe may I suggest getting a copy of the “Catechism of the Catholic Church”?

Christianity, like Islam, has its sects.

Yes I know, Catholics tell me different things too.

As I said, if you want truth, not opinion, go to the CCC.

I assume if I wanted to know Islam you would recommend opening my Qur’an?

Can you show me where I can get the CCC? Also does the CCC have different interpretations?

Well, in order to interpret the Bible, you need to do it in the context of the times and the culture. This is why I do not go by the fundamentalist literalist interpretation of the Bible but the Church’s.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn_the_other_cheek

Similarly, a Muslim would tell me to open the hadiths and the Qur’an to understand Islam (not just the Qur’an).

Understand? 😉

Wikipedia isn’t a good source at all. I am looking into getting the CCC. Though I have too much homework to read it 😦 , I will read it slowly if it is long.

No, Wikipedia is not a good source for most things. But this passage is generally understood this way among most Biblical scholars. It is the only way this teaching makes sense in light of His earlier teachings (re: self defense). By the way, grab the 2nd edition of the Catechism. The 2nd one was translated from the official Latin.

You can find a searchable Catechism here:

scborromeo.org/ccc.htm.

Good night Emad. I hope you do pick up the CCC.

If it’s any inspiration, I attend Mass everyday and I believe I am a devout Catholic yet I still own a Qur’an.

If we are going to converse isn’t it better if we all attempt to understand each others beliefs?

Emad, the Catechism of the Catholic Church is also available in shortened (condensed) form. I recommend Father Lukefahr’s the Catechism Handbook.

I hear of priests molesting kids alot, I don’t blame your religion for it.
Show me one instance of a priest molesting a kid where the priest shouted “God is great”. The Catholic Church is doing its best to weed out these shamless men and paying to the victims. How is Islam attempting to prosecute those that kill innocents, behead them and showing it to the world and trying to bring all those that kill innocents in the name of Allah to justice? Show me one instance where Islam has tried to pay for the deaths of those 9/11 victims or those victims that were killed under the name of Allah? Show me where one Catholic Bishop has called for the death of a catholic who converted to Islam and that the Catholics will shread that person to pieces? You cant show to me that Islam is the religion of peace until I see that people are free in Saudi Arabia to worship as they please. You cant show me that Islam is the religion of peace when I hear Muslim leaders threatening anybody with death if they convert from Islam, inciting riots, and demanding death over some dumb cartoons.

The religion of pieces? lol What kid of pieces, reses pieces, hmmm making me hungry 😃 What does the individual acts of Muslims have to do with Islam? I hear of priests molesting kids alot, I don’t blame your religion for it. Also a lot of the drug dealers in my area have crosses around their necks, should I blame your religion?
Emad, you’ll hear of teachers, cops and others molesting kids more than priests. Only 3.5% of priests in the USA in the past 50 years have been accused of abuse. That’s a pretty low number in perspective. Protestants have some 10% rate. The church is also trying to reform itself and weed out those infidels. Islam is not clean there, either. What’s the muslim school called? starts with an M something… just do a google for Islam child-abuse Britain. In many Muslim countries women and other minorities also fear going forward to the police to report rapes because their testimony is worth less than a Muslim man’s in Sharia. People in glass houses… 😉

Did you attend any mosque and hear that? Did you call any mosque? Or are these the imams on fox news, cnn, and jihadwatch? **

The point is to be open minded and be able to tell the difference between individual actions and the teachings of a religion. Even if 99% of the priests molested children, I wouldn’t blame the religion, but them as individuals, even if they said it was part of thier religion. Is it so hard for you to try and do the same?

I do not understand why the Saudi government gets to represent all of Islam. Is there some reason you have for demanding that, before Islam can be anything, the Saudi government must make some law?

Well I will give you that, the media is doing a GREAT job of furthering the divide between Islaam and Christianity by fueling peoples passions on both sides. They are surely adding fuel to the fire in many unnecessary ways… but even in more restrained new reports, I can’t help but get the impression that there is a violent epidemic in the hearts of many Muslims - and for a religion of peace, 1 violent person infecting others with hatred is enough to be concerned about. Believe me, it makes me uneasy when I see problems in Christianity, because in a world where people are already on the edge, 1 incident can push thousands of people to making a rash and wrong decision in their faith, whether its leaving the faith altogether which is common in the West, or encouraging violence which seems to be common in the East - the religion HAS to speak out louder than those who are in the wrong.
