I think a lot of people underestimate Ted Cruz. He has come this far, which is further than Rubio or Kasich have. He is relatively young and has a long political career ahead of him. It is not unreasonable to think he will expand the skills he has in a presidential campaign, in particular communicating with moderates and finding common ground. If he doesn’t learn to do this, I agree he is done. But he is extremely intelligent and an effective politician. The backstabbing is Politician 101; politics is a rough and tumble sport. I don’t think that Cruz plays any dirtier than Clinton, Trump or most of the Presidents we have had in history.

If he can get the nomination, that will also confirm my sense that he has the skills to be president - let’s face it, it will involve a lot of negotiation, compromise…and deal making. Also, with Rubio as VP or at least campaigning (Florida) + Kasich (Ohio) + something from Trump hopefully (New York), I think the map looks completely doable for Cruz. Don’t underestimate the ever growing dissatisfied moderate center in both parties - Cruz is smart enough not to neglect these voters. I am a moderate and I like Cruz. Moderates voted for Cruz in Wisconsin and he has strong appeal all over the West. I think there is a lot of room to move here. Hillary has to stay left enough to keep Bernie voters. And there is her baggage on top of that, plus the 8 years of Obama to defend. Do people want that?

We forgive Clinton and Trump their past dirt; why not forgive Cruz his (gov’t shutdowns)? Why not assume he is evolving too? He is a lot smarter than either Clinton or Trump, or Bernie for that matter.

Cruz is in reality very competitive and I think could actually be a decent president - he is a better choice than Hillary, Bernie or Trump. The more of a real threat he becomes, we can expect ever fiercer push back from the media and the Democrats. But, again, another plus with Cruz, he is in his element here as well. He will stand his ground and is not going to start sending out vicious personal tweets to everyone.
There’s one point I have to take issue with you on, and that’s New York. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I’m suggesting that Trump will run third party (I think anyone who does believe that should make me an offer on a very nice river-spanning property that I’ve decided I don’t really need anymore). I’m just saying, NY ain’t voting Republican – okay, I know it happened in 1984, but look at the map that year:

(Mondale got Minnesota and D.C., though the latter doesn’t show up on the map.)

Yeah, just trying to be positive here. New York is as blue as the sea. But if Florida and Ohio are possibly just possiby in play, maybe one or two other states, we’ve got it. And just think, with Rubio and Kasich campaigning.

But yes Cruz does have to pivot big time. The reality is somewhere between what I am dreaming here and good old “conventional wisdom”. Which I say is a good place to be. My instinct is we could be all right w/ Cruz v Hillary.

From today’s Guardian:
Trump has gained substantial media coverage over his controversial proposals to ban Muslim immigrants from coming to the US and shut down mosques in America and for suggesting he was open to a federal registry of Muslim Americans.
theguardian.com/us-news/2016/apr/07/ted-cruz-stop-trump-movement-immigration-abortion-views

Maybe we should have a Federal Religion Registry where all Americans have to register their religion or if they are an atheist. There are actually countries that put their citizens’ religion on their passports or other IDs. Is this the kind of thing Cruz would want or is he only interested in registering Muslims?

After Wisconsin, Cruz Looks to Widen His Appeal
On the campaign trail this week, Cruz’s rhetoric was notably softened from the fire and brimstone that marked his early campaign appearances; in particular, his stump speech has shed the overtly religious tone that first endeared Cruz to evangelical voters.
“This next election is going to come down to three issues,” Cruz said Monday at a rally in Waukesha, Wis. “Jobs, freedom and security.”
The transition by Cruz is deliberate, as he now seeks to advance his argument beyond a base of values voters and staunch conservatives to a broader audience in the GOP. That shifted focus shone through Tuesday, as Cruz invoked “unity” and turned his eye toward the general election: “Let me just say, Hillary, get ready. Here we come.”
“It’s important that we start talking about issues that bring all Republicans together,” said one Cruz campaign source. “We’re at a point in the campaign when expanding the brand is kind of the next step.”
The refined messaging tack for Cruz and his campaign represents a stark departure from his successful values-centric approach in Iowa and throughout the first half of the GOP primary.
Wow, the pivot is already in full swing. I did not realize this. I have no illusions that this will fly with our already entrenched Trump and hard left Dem buddies, but my larger point is that this is a good thing for the general electorate, the undecided folks. And this goes to my point of Cruz being smart on when and what needs to be done. (along these lines I have not seen any nasty tweets yet out of the Cruz camp - say, maybe about Kasich’s wife)

Bill Blasio:

“Ted Cruz insulted the people of NY when it was politically convenient… he was trying to somehow cast negative aspersion on trump 'cause he came from NY…now he’ll pay the price for it…”

Bill Blasio? Uh…

Uh…and btw New York is Trump’s home state. He is definitely in his element with Blasio - I give you that on a silver platter.

Is it really Cruz who is interested in registering Muslims?
According to your article and quote, that is Trump’s interest.

Cruz is interested in vigilance, again, according to your article.
…Even if Cruz is able to assuage the remaining concerns among those Republicans who see him as indistinguishable from Trump, Democrats are already showing themselves as eager to paint the two candidates as one and the same.
The article does explain that apparent interchangeability between the two that just happened here.🙂

And trump has no interest in registering muslims. That was a media-whipped frenzy from a while ago.

Well, I’m a moderate Republican, but I figure we cannot expect to always have a moderate nominee – just lik right wingers can’t expect to always have a right wing nominee.
i don’t care about the distinctions of moderates vs conservatives, do care about ideological, which he certainly is: serving ideas rather than people.

Hopefully trump gets the nomination.

cruz is just another politician who will say and do anything to get elected, rather than do what he actually says.
I have not seen this to be the case. Cruz is the most principled of any of the candidates by far.

That’ WHY he told the people of Iowa he would not support corn subsidies.

This is NOT . . . “saying and doing anything to get elected”.

On one post you criticize Cruz for being inflexible (“inflexibility”).

Then on another post you take shots at Cruz for saying and doing “anything” to get elected.

Elsewhere you criticize Senator Cruz because of his looks.

You appeal to Bill de Blasio’s dislike of Cruz (which I think is a good thing).

You’ve criticized Senator Cruz for not being able to get along with colleagues.

That is because he called out Mitch McConnell on the Senate floor. That’s because Cruz was attempting to protect taxpayers like you and I against funding the bankers with taxpayer monies (in this case, “The Export Import Bank”) via back room deals which McConnell had denied he made (but he DID make).

The Export Import Bank is a tax payer bail-out scheme that funds high-risk foreign businesses. Admittedly businesses that invest in the USA, but a money lending operation that still puts foreign business men and women before American business people.

And all Cruz wanted with that was a Senate hearing and debate culminating with a floor vote.

And Senator Cruz was concerned that “back-room deals” by McConnell were being undertaken (yet again).

McConnell denied it but Cruz later found out that McConnell had lied to him and others in the Senate.

Cruz is protecting you and I and our hard-earned tax dollars, so I am certainly not going to complain about how Cruz can’t “get along”. As a matter of fact, this HELPED my estimation of Senator Cruz.

And those same establishment Republicans have ALSO undermined Trump’s candidacy too. And they will continue to do so.

Trump cannot offer them what they want. They want money for their own re-elections!

You might say: “Well McConnell isn’t up for re-election this year Cathoholic.”

But in a certain sense he IS. Why?

Because if the Senate flips to Democratic socialist control (also known as “Democrat”), McConnell loses his speakership (and McConnell may lose his position of leadership even as possible MINORITY leader if the Republican Senate takes a bad election hit in November).

There is also a boiling point among taxpayers that is carrying over to the elected officials. That’s WHY Boehner resigned rather than being challenged.

They see what happened to Eric Cantor, and they don’t want to end their career like he did.

The Republicans not only need money from Trump that he cannot deliver, they need a voting ground game.

That includes sophisticated data bases, and committed people who share the same ideology.

Trump HAS some committed people (like you), but the financial aspect has not been tested yet.

And Trump’s ground-game is deplorable.

That’s why he has hemorrhaged so many uncommitted delegates, than without knowing what he is talking about, cries out “cheating!”.

Then when RNC chair Priebus explains things to Trump that he should have known long ago, Trump turns on his own staff (which MAY be right).

Trump can’t control his mouth.

You have criticized Cruz several times here for his “New York Values” imprudent comment but you failing to see Trump’s constant failures will not help Trump in a general election.

It isn’t going to work.

Trump hasn’t gotten 50% of the vote in ANY state yet. Admittedly the field has been crowded (and he will in New York–it will be a very bad sign for him if he doesn’t) but Trump’s negatives are exceedingly high. Especially among women (70%).

The Twitter rants have not helped Trump either.

Then Tuesday after saying he was going to be more presidential, after getting beat by double digits by Cruz, Trump put out a campaign statement where he went right back to the name calling.

People don’t like this kind of thing.

And with Trump’s **abortion “exceptions” where Trump in essence defines some humans as LESS than humans **. . . it isn’t going to play to strong Pro-Life people as a whole.

Oh yeah it will be acceptable to SOME, but to others its just another pro-abort who will make them stay home on Voting Day in November (like they did with Dole, McCain, and Romney).

The Republican establishment does NOT want to have any “dust-up” with Trump either.

Trump is so imprudent that the Senators and Congress men and women don’t want Trump publicly parading their families out for insults.

Trump hasn’t just insulted Cruz’s wife. He insulted Fiorina and also Jeb Bush’s wife.

These guys KNOW Trump is extremely impetuous and childish at times.

And appealing to videos making fun of Cruz (here) even though it is a “spoof”, adding a second to the “snake” comment and other PERSONAL attacks against Senator Cruz has not been persuasive.

The establishment Republicans hate Cruz too–but for different reasons.

They hate Cruz because not only is Cruz an ideologue, but he is an ideologue that is DIFFERENT from THEM (they are ideologue’s too, just about DIFFERENT things).

The “New York Values” thing WAS a bad political choice, but everybody knew Cruz was alluding to liberal democrat control of Government.

Trump has used the same phrase.

But it is obviously “campaign fodder” that will (and has been) be used against him.

Senator Cruz’s campaign has not batted a thousand. None of them do. But Senator Cruz is a principled Pro-Life Constitutional Conservative who does what he says he will do when he can.

It is Fiorina who first said that Cruz is just another politician who will say and do anything to get elected.

He has ridden on the coattail of trump for the most part of the campaign, eyeing how the public receives trump’s positions and then adopting those positions for his own; hence he’s going to build a wall, he’s going to out-trump trump on immigration, he favors fair trade not free trade. But in the senate he pushed for increasing immigration hundreds fold, he pushed for amnesty, he supported the TPP bill. Now his positions are all different because, well, the public wants something different.

What he did to Carson in Iowa was inexcusable. The Iowa voter violation mailer was inexcusable.

The times he’s put up ads lying about trump’s positions are numerous. He even was bold enough to say trump was against the 2nd amendment.

The superpac ad of melania very possibly could have been ordered by himself. Or at least I don’t believe for a second he had no idea.

He did illegally coordinate with his super pac because the super pac paid for and hosted one of his events in wisconsin, the link for which I had posted earlier.

When the sex scandal broke, cruz instantly blamed trump for the whole thing–how very slimy and wicked for him to say trump was behind the magazine story while all the evidence pointed to the Rubio camp, and never mind the magazine has had a history of doing such stories about presidential candidates.

I will never ever trust Cruz. It’s frightening when someone can claim to be such a holy christian, a leader for faithful christians, a leader for values, and then pull tricks as he has. Trump insults people, yes, but he doesn’t hide behind glamorous values and stab people behind their backs. A hypocrite is much more frightening than a vulgarian.

Oh, and I forgot cruz conveniently forgetting to disclose million dollar loans from major banks on his federal forms.
