Numerous sources report that Obama got some 54% of the Catholic vote in the 2008 election. The last poll I saw (May 2012) indicated that Obama was supported by about 50% of Catholic voters:

gallup.com/poll/154430/catholics-presidential-pick-differs-ethnicity-religiosity.aspx

I realize that was three months ago, so I’d welcome more recent poll numbers, although I’m not sure whether polling will track will with the actual vote. We’ll all see.

As for the Democratic National Convention, I would expect that the major talking points would include:
  • Our nation’s recovery after the greatest world-wide financial disaster since the Great Depression;
  • The end of the war in Iraq and withdrawal of our forces from Afghanistan. These wars cost us more than 6,500 American lives and more than 96,000 wounded. In 2008, we had as many as 187,900 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have already spent between $2.4 and 2.7 trillion, and by the end of these wars, it is estimated that we will have spent $3.7 trillion.
  • Passage of the Affordable Care Act, which ensured that tens of millions more Americans will have health insurance and ended a number of abuses by insurance companies.
Those would be my top three.
There has not been a recovery. Day after Obama’s DNC speech the August jobs report will be released, and made clear again lack of jobs. ObamaTax intrudes on religious liberty of millions which is why dozens of lawsuits, including many from Catholic institutions and archdioceses have been pursued

There has not been a recovery.
I agree with you, but…the Romney side of this rotten coin disagrees. Their talking point is that “this is the worst recovery in the history of mankind”. Therefore, they cede the point that Obama took over a mess and turned it around. Their argument, not yours or mine, is that Obama’s policies aren’t good enough but they are good. How absurd.

That’s why neither party is worth supporting. Two sides of the same coin and the folks don’t count. The propaganda at the Republican convention was nauseating. The democrats are usually better at this nonsense but we’ll see. Whoever wins, we lose and the ponzi scheme that is our current economy will collapse sooner rather than later.

Never heard Romney say Obama’s policies were good. Whoever wins matters, it matters for religious liberty, it matters for marriage, it matters for the unborn, it matters for the direction that America takes

One thing we know for sure…the candidate Nec5 supports won’t be in the White House come January 2013.

If thats true, then why are you bothering to post?

For anyone who doubts Obama’s contempt for America, I urge you to go to your nearest theater and see 2016: Obama’s America (by Dinesh D’souza and the producer of Schindler’s List). Or, if you haver the time, read D’ Souza’s book “The Roots of Obama’s Rage.” Almost all of the points he makes come straight from the horse’s mouth. I defy anyone to deny the accuracy of his investigation. The conclusion is downright frightening. It’s not a slander piece either. I actually felt a deep swell of empathy for Mr. Obama, who has had a very unusual and painful life. D’ Souza seems to feel as much. Unlike Michael Moore, Dinesh does not take pot shots at the president’s personality or intelligence, and while some psychological conjecture is made, it is never derogatory and always well supported by corroborating statements from the president himself, as well as some of his close mentors (heads up: his association with Pastor Wright had nothing to do with religion or “black credibility,” but everything to do with the shared political ideology of Wright and Obama’s father. This is amply demonstrated in the film) and close personal friends and cohorts of his father (who Obama openly admits is his greatest inspiration). Tellingly, one of Obama, Sr.'s associates, who worked side by side with him for many years says Obama II’s policies are “exactly like those of his father.” We are then treated to some of the political writings of Sr., and sure enough, they line up perfectly with Jr.'s record. The more honest statement of the intended effect, however, is damning if unsurprising.

I can’t urge you enough: tell your friends, tell your family. Not only for his attack on religious liberty and support for abortion, but for the safety of this country and the free world, this man CANNOT be reelected.

In a Switch, GOP’s Speakers Highlight Diversity
Tuning in to the Republican National Convention this week, viewers could be forgiven for thinking they had switched on the Democratic convention of yesteryear, what with all the up-and-coming women and minority politicians taking the stage. It’s a contrast with Democrats, who will trot out a bunch of timeworn white guys next week in Charlotte to help make the party’s case to the nation
It is one of this presidential election’s most striking juxtapositions that Mitt Romney, a Republican throwback, is leading a renaissance of down-ballot diversity. And President Obama, dependent on high minority turnout and support, is counting on a group of largely white political veterans to vouch for him at next week’s Democratic National Convention

Charlotte gets dissed as ‘second-tier city’
International news agency Reuters has reported Charlotte’s DNC performance may not “live up to the parties of the past,” and quoted a Washington lobbyist calling Charlotte prospects “grim.”
Lobbyist Heather Podesta, the story says, scouted 30 restaurants here earlier in the year. “Going to the nascar Hall of Fame isn’t reason enough to be in Charlotte.”
The article says: “Democratic insiders see less enthusiasm on the part of the party faithful. Fewer politicians will be making the trip to a second-tier host city with few cultural attractions.”
Democrats are trying to spend less money this year than four years ago, the story contends, “and many were already less than enthusiastic about spending a week in Charlotte, which is known more for its banks than its cultural amenities.”

At least it is true to say that Romney is rich. It is untrue to suggest that Obama is foreign-born, Muslim, socialist, or hates America, but we’ve heard lots of that from the Republican side. Both sides are running pretty ugly negative campaigns.
That is ducking the point.

So is the size of Romney’s bank account really a reason not to vote for him?

Conservatives have Dinesh D’Souza. Liberals have Michael Moore. We all lose. 😦

A variant of “if you want to criticize America, what are you doing living here?” 🤷
Not at all. If you think the whole things a ponzi scheme and the political process doesn’t matter - then why would you care which guy wins and post about it?

That is a completely unfair comparison. Demonstrate one way in which D’ Souza resorts to dishonesty to make his case. Have you even read or seen either of the works I cited? My strong suspicion is that you haven’t.

It doesn’t matter - in my opinion, of course - who wins. I think that it’ll be, with minor differences, business as usual. I, to the best of my memory, did not express a desire to see either candidate win the election. That’s one reason I’m not voting in the Presidential race. Both men have too many negatives.

You are the one saying that I’ve called D’Souza dishonest. I have not. My remark was, “Conservatives have Dinesh D’Souza. Liberals have Michael Moore. We all lose.” How do you make a case for dishonesty out of that short statement??? 🤷

Why do we all lose w/ Dinesh D’Souza? The guy is brilliant.

Ishii
Absolutely agree. Have been following him for years. He has a particularly insightful perspective on Obama as an immigrant from a country that was colonized by the British. In that perspective he has the immigrant’s love for America because he knows another world and it ain’t pretty. He understands Obama’s upbringing and influences very well.

Not everyone agrees that Obama is motivated by an anti-colonial power perspective but his ACTIONS sure indicate that D’Souza is onto something.

Oh and as to comparing him to Michael Moore…PUH LEASE. Aside from the fact that Moore is an uneducated boob compared to D’Souza, his films are sensationalist, lacking in fact, cruel to those who were inadvertently included in them and fairy tales at best. Yes we’re all breaking down doors to get medical care in Cuba…

Spare me

Because the implication is that Dinesh D’ Souza’s work is of negative value. If you aren’t familiar with his work, then you have no basis upon which to judge it. How, then, can you say, “we all lose?” I will say that I think Michael Moore is quite often full of baloney, but I have watched his films and read his writing. I’ve also read D’ Souza. He is much more scholarly in his work. The man is a professional scholar, after all. Michael Moore is… Well… Michael Moore.

I don’t even agree with D’ Souza’s politics 100%, but he’s very forthright and honest about them. Regardless, they have no bearing on his research into Obama’s history. Heck, his main resources were Obama’s own books.

But, I digress. The point is making such judgmental comments when you’re not even familiar with the individual/work in question doesn’t even merit consideration. It’s just blind contrarianism.
