Democratic convention

I found this fascinating:

***One way or another—because he is treated rudely, as an enemy; or because he is treated politely, as a foreign dignitary—Cardinal Dolan’s appearance in Charlotte will help Catholic voters to notice that they are no longer “at home” in the Democratic Party. Like the cardinal they may be accepted as guests, but as long as the Democratic Party embraces the culture of Death, Catholic Democrats will be operating on alien territory.

Cardinal Dolan offered to attend the convention if his presence was wanted. The truth is that he is not wanted. But the Democratic Party has chosen to pretend, and that is a serious tactical error***

Interesting also that the writer didn’t mention the original kerfluffle when Cardinal Dolan made the offer, was rebuffed and then after perhaps some pressure, was re-invited. He’s right the Cardinal is not likely welcome, particularly if the Benediction speaks of human life and unborn babies. I suspect it will as he included this in the RNC Benediction.

As I said, hope he brings a gallon of Holy Water and prays for the many lost souls

Lisa
The article quotes this from Sharon Otterman of the New York Times:

Cardinal Dolan, an opponent of abortion and same-sex marriage who is among the Catholic bishops suing the Obama administration over its contraception health care mandates, will bless a gathering of thousands of delegates who passionately disagree with him.

How ironic. The Cardinal will be entering a venue in which most of those present have contempt for him and for the Catholic Church and all it stands for, and whose candidates and speakers will have put forth policies clearly at odds with Catholic morality.

I doubt that the good Cardinal was blessing everything that was said in Tampa, he gave a well-considered and quite Catholic (Universal) benediction. My only concern is that the radical Democrats will be rude to this man who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of the spiritual.

That would be a disaster for the Democrats.

On the other side of the coin, if the Cardinal does anything other than give a proper benediction, with appropriate, but gentle admonitions, as he did last evening, that would be a disaster for the Republicans.

I doubt he would do anything …shall I say…foolish.

I expect Cardinal Dolan will give a proper benediction. I’m honestly split on my hope for what the radical Democrats will do. Politically, I hope they are as stupid as I think they will be, because I know it will benefit Romney/Ryan. However, I also hope for unity someday and don’t want the Cardinal disrespected. It would be nice if the “tolerant” left actually showed some tolerance for a change…

If the Cardinal gives benediction to the Dem, it simply means he carries out the Church’s teaching - love not only one’s friends but also one’s enemies. With the content of pro-life and pro-marriage, he will reaffirm his Catholic belief regardless who are the audience. After all, he is praying to God, not to man. Jesus said in the Bible about giving peace - for those who do not accept it, the peace will go back to the disciple. Therefore, for those who do not accept the benediction, the blessing will go back the the Cardinal. The Dem won’t get the blessing. As the Cardinal leaves the stage, he can shake the dust on his feet.

Well, if he simply reaffirms Catholic beliefs in the context of prayer, he will still by that very fact be rejecting the Democratic Platform.

That’s totally inaccurate.

The GOP isn’t the Catholic party and the Democratic the “evil” party.

It’s not all black hats and white hats.

You either deliberately or mistakenly made reference to the wrong word. The word was Democrat PLATFORM not Democrat party. The platform is pro abortion, pro same sex marriage. As a devout Catholic, Cardinal Dolan will speak against the PLATFORM, not the party the PLATFORM.

Let’s hope some hearts and minds are changed.

That’s your opinion…mine, Cardinal Dolan will give another good benediction and gently admonish the Democrats.

You missed the point entirely. JimG’s post indicated that the Cardinal’s comments will be against portions of the Democrat PLATFORM, not as ringil claimed against the Democrat party. FWIW he also mentioned the unborn in his Benediction for the RNC. However our platform comports with Catholic teaching unlike the Democrat platform which is riddled with support for anti life philosophies.

I do agree he will make these statements with candor tempered by a classy and appropriate delivery. I hope the Dems listen respectfully. The outburst by the pro homosexual contingent claiming that they did not want to bend to the 'neocon extremist" will not help them make their case. The Cardinal is beloved and respected by Democrats and Republicans alike.

You know Lisa, I am quite literate. I caught the point precisely, and I believe that the Cardinal will do exactly as I said.

A key issue is that during recessions, Reagan, G. H. W. Bush and G. W. Bush increased government employment significantly, which reduced unemployment. During the Obama presidency, the number of people employed by the government has been reduced. A recent estimate is that overall unemployment would be lower by about one percent if government employment were increased by levels similar to such increases under Reagan.
Reagan cut government spending, he worked with his democrat congress, he cut tax rates… Obama wants to increase taxes, he is not reducing government spending, he has not taken action in working with the House republicans, he has not met with Reid and Boehner to say which bills he would sign. Their has been no budget for 3 years

Republicans Plan Counter-Convention in Charlotte, NC
Sure, Democrats had some spokespeople wandering around Tampa, Fla. But Republicans plan to bracket Democrats’ Charlotte, N.C., convention with an unprecedented counter-convention right outside the gates of the Time Warner Cable Arena, where Democrats will gather after Labor Day.
As many as 50 “communicators” will travel straight from the Republican convention, which wrapped up Tuesday in Tampa, up to Charlotte, where Democrats kick off their convention in earnest on Tuesday, according to a plan provided to ABC News.
Primetime speakers from the Republican event who will travel up to Charlotte include RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, and Govs. Nikki Haley of South Carolina and Mary Fallin of Oklahoma. They’ll hone in on a theme – “Obama Isn’t Working” – and offer rapid response, daily videos to counter the Democrats’ message.
It will be an effort full of gimmicks, including a Romney-Ryan NASCAR race car – number 12 for 2012, of course.
And while Democrats have happily made light of Mitt Romney’s “Etch A Sketch” foible, Republicans will bring their own toys, including “You Build It” Legos and “You Build It” Monopoly.
Republicans have tried to woo independent voters who supported President Obama in 2008 but are disappointed in his performance.
To that point, they’ll have plenty of Kleenex – “because breaking up is hard to do” – according to the plan.
They will also provide a mock “leaked copy of Obama’s second term agenda.” But it’ll be a blank binder. Get it?
“We will ensure that voters hear the record of failed policies of this administration and provide a clear contrast with the Romney plan to get the economy moving and get people back to work,” said Sean Spicer, communications director for the GOP. “This will be the most effective counter-programming effort ever conducted by the GOP.”
Update: The DNC points out they had a robust counter-convention of their own. In no particular order, according to a DNC official, getting the Democratic message out at the Republican convention they had a plane, a satellite truck, an office steps from the perimeter, full campaign support, 40 staffers, four press conferences, the Democratic National Committee chair, the Democratic Governor’s Association Chair, a senator, a governor, house members, and bus tours in three states.

And the number of people who have quit working altogether, or have gone on SS Disability has risen meteorically.

From the AP:
DNC security rules trigger free speech worries
Starting Saturday, someone walking through Charlotte’s central business district could run afoul of the law by carrying water bottles, hair spray, socks or magic markers under sweeping security rules enacted ahead of the Democratic National Convention.

It would take a particularly strict reading of the rules for someone to be arrested simply for possessing one of those items, but the possibility exists — which worries protesters and free speech advocates. They fear authorities could trample on people’s constitutional rights in the name of protecting public safety.

The changes to city ordinances adopted earlier this year for “extraordinary events” ban a long list of actions and items that would otherwise be legal from a more than 100-square-block zone. The area includes spots as much as a mile from the sports venues where the Democratic Party events are to be held.
Now while I don’t blame the DNC for this, in particular, it goes to show how our civil liberties are being trampled upon on a daily basis.

I was commenting on this part of InLight 247’s post: “If the Cardinal gives benediction to the Dem, it simply means he carries out the Church’s teaching - love not only one’s friends but also one’s enemies. I have no idea as to the what the content of the Cardinal’s benediction will be. But the fact is, IF he prays for respect for life and for marriage, reaffirming Catholic beliefs, he will de facto be rejecting key parts of the Democratic Party platform.

It’s an inevitable conflict—between Catholic morals and Democratic platform positions—as this previously linked article makes clear.

Indeed, to many, the party and the president seem to have a near contempt for the Catholic Church. I expect that will become even more evident in an Obama second term.

The platform of the Democrat Party is evil by Catholic moral standards.

A similar prayer to the one at the GOP convention would be great.

The Democrat party Platform supports two intrinsic evils - Homosexual marriage and abortion. . You will find no support of an intrinsic evil in the Republican Party platform. It is pretty black and white-in this years election a Catholic can not vote for Barrack Obama. They can, but are not required to, vote for Romeny.

A similar prayer to the one at the GOP convention would be great.
As I said in the other convention thread, I hope he does the prayer word-for-word, with the exception of the candidates. There was nothing partisan about his prayer…it matches up with Catholic and American ideals.
