So? This is the same as calling it a witch hunt. It’s a move to discredit and distract. Oh–let’s not leave out the technicality—not all of the victims were children. Some were adolescents. Oh, o.k. So sexually abusing a 14 year old is somehow less bad than sexually abusing a 10 year old? Are you you agreeing with that poor excuse for an article? They were adolescents. They should’ve known better than to let themselves be abused. Right?

If Johnny stole an apple, he wouldn’t get in trouble. So why do I have to get in trouble? 😭😭😭

I’m done with this.
@TotusTuusForever, please don’t leave. You’re better than they are. Stick it out with the good ones who stayed.

I recently read an article that said that a survivor of McCarrick’s abuse told John Paul II about it and he only said he would pray for him and nothing was ever done after that. I always held John Paul II in high regard, but I’m very surprised if this was true, especially since he has ben declared a saint. It makes me question everything I have accepted on the basis of faith.

@Minks The moderator just closed a thread on the innocence of Cardinal Pell…I think I am finished for now. 🙏 It was a satire but it made the point of the evils done by a Kangaroo court in Australia. …Title satire…Cardinal Pell convicted of witchcraft. God bless

Well I’ve got so much love & respect for the man I won’t even entertain the thought something like that is even remotely true.

I would have thought the fact that I used the # of priests from 2018 , and the number that article used of a 1,000, even over decade s
The article actually states
Over the past four months, Roman Catholic dioceses across the US have released the names of more than 1,000 priests and others accused of sexually abusing children in an unprecedented public reckoning.
Even the title misrepresents the actual numbers. Not being picky here, just identifying inconsistency’s in the reporting title which many would read and have that number (1000) set in their mindset.

To sum up my concerns, the Church is suppose to be heaven on earth, but all of the sin from the very top of the hierarchy has me questioning if that is too good to be true. Is the Church actually heaven when a child goes to confession and gets abused by the priest? And then, he tells the bishop and the bishop sweeps it under the rug, or worse the priest is promoted?

I’m just confused about how theology is supposed to fit into these circumstances. How are the blessed and “holy” hands of priests doing such insanely horrible sins against their own flock? What I have read in this thread is a lot of people trying to minimize the crimes, which honestly makes me have even less confidence in the explanations of the church about the abuse crisis. I’m just at a loss for words at this point. I feel like so many in the church just don’t get the severity of it all.

Then give me a convincing argument instead of pushing me out the door.

Imagine you were a Jew living a the 10th century BC & you were told your King committed adultery & had the woman’s husband killed. Are you going to defect to Egypt?

I do pray for them every day. I pray for the entire church. You think I have stopped praying? Because I haven’t. Im just heartbroken and confused.

I agree it is a huge number. Not one single case should have occured. But that is not the point here, or at least is not the issue I thought the OP was having.

I was trying to demonstrate for the OP, that when putting numbers into perspective, then it is unfair to tar all members of the priesthood with the same brush to the extent it leads to disillusionment with the Church as a whole.

Hey, I was just askin’

At some point you will have to let go of this and trust God to see that justice is done. You and I can do exactly zero about it…

…except pray, and that is already being done.

Have you spoken with Father about this mess?

Don’t project inability to take responsibility for your words on me. If anyone walks out because of the abuse crisis, they did so in the mind that they do not want to condone a church that allows priests to sexually abuse their flock.

And, don’t jump to the conclusion that I am walking away from the church. I never said I am leaving the church. Am I trying to find an explanation for why God would allow this in HIS church? Yes. But, until I come to a conclusive answer I am not going anywhere.

@TheHolyTrinity

Thank you for clarifying that point for readers.

I read it as the number 1,000 referring to priests alone. Not including others, but yes, if we included others the number I would think would be greater. It didn’t break the numbers down to Priests, Nuns, Brothers, Deacons etc. But as the majority of news stories cover priests, I assumed that that would be the concern of the OP in relation to the Church.

I was replying to the Little Lady comment of:-
From the article you linked, that 1,000 “The recently disclosed accusations date back six or seven decades in some cases, with the oldest from the 1910s in Louisiana.”
hence my post including “even over decades” as this was in reference to the quote from TheLittleLady above.
Even the title misrepresents the actual numbers. Not being picky here, just identifying inconsistency’s in the reporting title which many would read and have that number (1000) set in their mindset.
Thank you for embedding the article in your post (reminder to do it that way as I usually do, but because of haste used the words this news article from January this year - my mistake) - which title states more than 1,000 priests…

But as with all news articles - the headlines grab/click bait.

It is wonderful to hear that you are praying for the entire church. The principle target of the devil is the Catholic priesthood precisely because priests bring forth the Holy Eucharist through the power of the Holy Spirit. Without the priesthood, there would be no Sacraments.

St. Therese who was a spiritual mother to priests said: “Behind each priest, there is a demon fighting for his fall.”
