Do Catholics have to pray to Mary?

What are those prayers? I haven’t been able to find them…
There is one discussed earlier in this thread. If the priest chooses to use the Confiteor, it contains specific invocation to “blessed Mary, ever virgin”. I said it along with the congregation at Mass yesterday.

The Confiteor goes like this:

I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done
and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault,
through my fault,
through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Here we ask Mary to pray for us with the other saints, the angels and each other

One needs simply to look in detail at the events at the wedding in Cana, and you will see immediately who Jesus looks up to. We note that he isn’t too keen to get involved in the arrangements of a wedding, but she impresses on him how important it is to have enough wine. When I read that chapter I think fondly of my mum. When she insisted she insisted.

The greatest part is to come, because this same person switches focus and now where the issue was wine, now decides to use that influence to help people who need help. And just in case there is any doubt of her standing, she is crowned Queen of all in front of all the angels. We note no one misses the coronation, the Holy Spirit, the Father and the Son were all in attendance. When she says there are 15 promises, who’s going to object?!!!

All one can say is, Wow! really? for us?!!. You bet and she thinks we are worth it.

There was an old timer parish priest who held a talk about Mary, and he told us he believed that communication went through Mary before it got to Jesus.

Ideo precor beatam Mariam.

That is a direct prayer to Mary, couldn’t be clearer. And a poster on this thread said he has a problem with it and refuses to say it.

If we include the Office as well as the Mass…that poster on this thread would remain silent for the Marian antiphons, which are also direct prayers to Mary.

Here we ask Mary (along with the other saints, angels and each other) to pray for us to God… you are right! It is perfectly clear

The liturgy also includes prayers to Mary that are NOT merely requests that she intercede to God. You should be more concerned about the poster on this thread who would rather leave the Church than accept a prayer to Mary (to the point he refuses to pray the Confiteor at Mass).

Would you mind citing those prayers? I haven’t been able to find them

Go check out the Liturgy of the Hours and the Marian antiphons therein. That’s just a start.

Thanks!

How about the Mass of the Latin Rite?

In terms of the Mass there is the confeteoir, the Communion of Saints is mentioned during the creed and the Eucharistic prayer and the priest may offer a prayer to Mary after the prayers of the faithful or Holy Communion. The LOTH rnds compline with a Marian hymn and loads of other references on Marian feast days.

The Confiteor has the faithful asking Mary, the rest of the saints, the angels, and each other to pray of us. - therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.

The Apostles Creed has the faithful declaring a believe in the Communion of Saints. - I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.

The Nicene Creed has the faithful acknowledging our belief that Jesus was incarnate of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit. - and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.

In the Eucharistic Prayer, the faithful are called upon to pray with Mary and others… - In communion with those whose memory we venerate,
especially the glorious ever-Virgin Mary,
Mother of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ,
† and blessed Joseph, her Spouse,
your blessed Apostles and Martyrs,
Peter and Paul, Andrew… etc

I haven’t been able to find an instance of where we are called to pray to Mary in the Mass… is there an instance out there where the faithful pray to Mary in the Mass?

That is the prayer to Mary.

When we say pray to we usually mean ask the person to intercede for us.

lonewolf rejects asking anyone at all to pray for him as God hears his prayers.

Go it… seems like the terms ‘pray with’ and ‘ask Mary to pray for us’ most accurately convey what is done at Mass… at least in the English language.

Thanks

It’s not rocket science.
Agreed… not rocket science… that’s why this conversation is so strange.

Here is the translation of ‘Ideo precor beatam Mariam’ - ‘therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin’ and then the Confiteor goes on to say ‘all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters,to pray for me to the Lord our God’.

Catholics are obliged to honour Mary in the Liturgy. What is being debated here is in one’s personal devotions outside of Liturgy.

This is very much a North American debate. Latin Americans or Filipinos are very open about their Marian devotion. In Nicaragua, the feast of the Immaculate Conception is a week long celebration.

Orthodox people are required to pray to the Saint they are named after, the Holy Virgin, and their Guardian Angel every day. We do not separate the idea that you should honor the Holy Virgin in the Liturgy and yet privately refuse to seek Her intercession. We believe that the whole point of human existence is to become one with God by adoption and grace. So God has chosen to use His adopted Sons and Daughters as means of Salvation. We are not afraid to ask the Holy Virgin and Saints and Angels to Save us and forgive us, we see that this is the only way that God has set things in order. There are plenty of Scriptures that prove that this is a communion of the Faithful into one Body, which is Christ and that the prayers for others is required.

“Moreover, that the images of Christ, of the Virgin Mother of God, and of the other saints, are to be had and retained particularly in temples, and that due honour and veneration are to be awarded them;.” (Session 25)
