Do you ever cry during Mass?

Probably the closest for me is the desert Fathers sense of weeping in terms of spiritual joy, but these for me don’t manifest as tears. Sometimes there is also sorrow over sins and also an incredible sense of inward peace, especially after communion.

If I cry, it’s usually due to something in the homily that hits me personally, or during a hymn, which I feel is more noticeable because I have to cut out singing until I’ve regained composure.
LOL, I do that too! I can hardly sing at Mass anymore because my voice cracks and gets so choked up. 😃

I am in there with the “lose it on the Lamb of God” prayer. It’s the the asking for mercy that gets me, when we need mercy so much and we have it only because of the sacrifice of the lamb…

I am a convert (10 yrs) and for the first full year or so I cried every time I went to recieve Jesus. I also lose it often when we venerate the cross during the Triduum.

I am receiving spiritual communion for my mother who is in late stages of dementia and on Mother’s Day Sunday I did the ugly cry before I could even help it. That was a little embarrassing…but anything for my mommie:heart:

To littleone, I’m sorry that it took so long for a reply. Its just that I was so busy. I realize now that I used the wrong wording. I should have said the bishops would be the apostles on earth. And the disciples would be the Priests and lay Ministers. There would also be a small number of people to whom The Holy Spirit would have bestowed Gifts (Acts 12-13-14). These people would be using these gifts similar to a disciple. They want no glory on earth. These gifts are not presents for oneself. They are to be used to help other people reach Heaven. *** The Holy Spirit is also my Comfortor on earth. This sunday is Pentecost. I’m so excited. I see the fire burning over my head after I receive the Eucharist during Mass.*** Sincerely
Thank you, and can I share with you a special point and that is that there are times when God the Holy Spirit will share a special mention with us and it is for no other reason than He wishes us to know He loves us.
One such time was when I had a traumatic happening and when I got home that day a friend came to my place at the same time and he said “Wayne the Holy Spirit told me to tell you He loves you”. I was shocked, but you are right this sunday is Pentecost Sunday. Here is the point though, I just happen to be readiing at mass and the point is it also is my birthday. What a gift thank you Holy Spirit for ever and ever. And the choire of angels said :dancing: AMEN :extrahappy: :bounce:  :bowdown2:

Awesome! I still cry when I receive Eucharist. I have to remember to buy those little Kleenex for my purse. :o

To little one,
In questioning me about apostles and disciples, please accept me as a beginer writer. I am only putting all my inner-most thoughts down on paper. I have never had a spiritual counselor to talk to. The Holy Trinity has been my Spiritual Counselor.
When Jesus Christ offered bread and wine, those symbols of
His Body and Bood to his apostls/ or now in our lifetime, our Catholic preist offers this to me…I know that I will eat His Body and drink His Blood to have a chance of living forever with Him in Heaven.
Please correct me. Who is a disciple?

Hi I love your heart and thoughts, they make my heart tingle reading of your love for our God.
We are God’s disciples ( followers) of Jesus Christ in the body of the church. The acts we do in relation to discipleship are those that help the church or the body of Christ, whether they be little or big whether behind doors or in the arriena of the church, or helping our brother carry a heavy load (outside the church but in the name of Jesus Christ).

God bless
littleone

My mom and I just recently had an embarrassing cry moment at Mass. An elderly man collapsed during Mass, I think it was right before the Consecration…but he was alone and some other parishioners laid him down on the pew and waited for the paramedics. Of course, Mass continued and the priest came down right before he started handing out communion to anoint him (at least that’s what it looked like he was doing)… right then and there :crying: Mom was crying because the poor guy was all alone and I was crying because I could stop thinking that there’s nowhere else on this planet I would want to be when it’s my time to go than in front of the Eucharist. What a way to go…

Yes of course! 😃 Especially after communion or on special holy days.

Well, I never cried, but some Masses make my eyes be filled with tears and for this reason I have to make a big effort to not cry during those Masses. For example, the Easter Vigil Mass is very emotive for me. It’s so beautiful… So are the Fatima cerimonies which I see on TV in May 13th and October 13th. Specially the procession with the image of Our Lady.

Sometimes I’ll be moved to tears during Mass. I find it very embarrassing! :o I don’t like to let others see me cry and it ends up being distracting because once the tears start rolling I put all my effort into hiding them.

Anybody else have this happen?
Aww…Yes, I have felt this way, at times. I sometimes find myself welling up after I receive communion, when I come back to my pew, and pray. The humble way I feel…the way I feel so unworthy for Christ’s body and blood…it’s very moving…beyond words, really. :o

Great thread!

Add another cryer to the group 🙂
For a long time just entering a Catholic Church would make me cry - Our Lords presence is so strong…and I’m a lifelong Catholic!

A beautiful song, the Priests Homily, Communion, the devotion of the people on their knees, the raising of the Euchrist, statues, the art, the sun streaming through the stained glass windows, and my own sorrowful intentions all bring tears to my eyes. What a glorious moment that is almost sureal.

May God Bless and keep safe all our Catholic Churches.:gopray2:

I do sometimes though I find it a bit embarassing as I am a 20+ year old fellow 🙂

Peter Kreeft once told a story of how he was with a Muslim - a student of his - at a Mass. The Muslim did not kneel or anything during the Mass, he just wanted to be there. Then, after the Mass he said to Peter Kreeft:

“Well, I just can’t believe how you can…well…”
“Go on, ask the question”
“How can you ever…well, I’m not sure whether I should ask that”
“Go on if you want, but I think I know what you want to ask - how is it possible that we Christians bow down to that little piece of bread where we believe Christ is fully present. Am I right?”
“No, no…It’s just the other way round…If you bown down to that little piece of bread where you believe your God is fully present…how can you ever get up?..”

Well and now tell your tears not to roll down during the Mass with that in the mind 🙂

Dear Catholic Family, littleone, masondoggy, zemi, and all those who might cry during Mass, May we all be blessed by the Holy Spirit with tongues of fire on this Pentecost Day. I am so spiritually overwhelmed by the responses of people who weep during Mass. No matter what part of the Mass that moves you to this fervant joy, Alleliua! This weekend, I went to our sat. eve. Mass at 5:30 and again on Sun. at 10:30. I can only do this once in a while, I dont walk well in the morning. But my reason for sharing is that I received 2 slightly different messages from our 2 Preists that gave those Masses.
Last evening, I concentrated on the Preist when it was the Communion Offitory. I watched his face & all his actions. His actions told just how he felt as the water & wine was changed into Christ’s Body & Blood. My tears began there, and kept slowly thru the remaining of the Mass. I always sit in the 1st or 2nd row so I can see good. We have all 3 new Preists at our parish. They are all around 55, like me. What I did different, was I prepared for Mass on my way to Chrch. I got everything else out of my head before I arrived. So I was ready to pray. In this mornings Mass, Our Pastor said Mass. In the homily,He spoke at length about the Holy Sprit. He touched on the Charismatic veiw and the gifts. I wished he would have said more about those extraordinary gifts, He cut that short, as if they dont exist! When the Offitory began, I kept my eyes on him also. I watched his mouth as if I could read lips. I watched his eyes as he looked up, I looked up too. Yes, all of this brings me to tears. But Im not crying. The tears just appear . I dont know they are there till they reach the corners of my mouth. When I watch my Preist here, I feel that I am at the Last Supper every time.I’m not embarrased anymore, now that I know they are a gift of The Holy Spirit. The Gift of Tears. Its difficult to find info, but if you dig on the internet you will find know more. Many saints had this gift.
And to Zemi, thank you. I too feel How Could I Ever Get Up?
Sincerely

Franny,

thanks for your post! You made my mind thinking about these things once again… 🙂

Not only do tears stream down my face during Mass, but I also cry like a baby when I’m home praying in my bedroom.

Like someone said earlier…for me it’s cleansing. It’s cathartic. I feel much better afterward. I have a friend that’s a friar and he told me that my crying during prayer is good (he said he wished he could do it more often)…it means God is “moving me”.

Everyone is different emotionally. At church when I cry I just let the tears roll down. I don’t make any noise at all. I don’t want to draw attention. I find myself staring at the crucifix over the altar and telling God I love Him. This makes me cry. Sometimes when the Our Father starts up I’m kinda choked up.

Sometimes I go to Mass and have other things on my mind and don’t shed a tear at all. But when I’m really into it, the tears come whether I like it or not.

I think the tears make God happy. It’s a sign that we love Him.
Ever had someone cry over you before? It usually means they love you very much.

I never realized just how many people cried during Mass! I came close a couple of times…but I hate to have to explain why I was crying, so I try to suppress the tears until bedtime, when I can cry freely into my pillow.

The reasons? There’s a couple of them…
When I have had time to think deeply about the pain Jesus must have endured during His life
During touching songs…not all the time, but if it’s a particularly graceful Mass, Amazing Grace is awesome! And when we sing religious/patriotic songs on national holidays, like America and America the Beautiful, to name a few, I almost cry in thanksgiving for living in such a great country
And most of all…
On Sundays when they talk about how Jesus healed the blind and the deaf and the lame, and quote that one Bible verse…I forget it exactly right now, but it goes like, “and the deaf shall hear the words of a book and the eyes of the blind shall see”.
Deafness has been a cross, but one I’m gradually learning to enjoy and to bear cheerfuly, and to use to my and others’ advantage, and to know that God hasn’t forgotten us…well, I’m starting to cry now! :crying: 🙂

all the time. i hold it back usually. it happens at different times during mass, the elements corresponding to the different points in my spiritual journey. usually during certain songs, consecration, or after receiving. often it’s a bummer when you’re praying after receiving our Lord, getting really into it, then you hear, “Let us pray…” but it’s no biggie.

Yes, after receiving Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

It happened every week when i first came back to the Church and totally gave myself to God. It lasted a few years and even though it still happens, it doesn’t happen as much anymore… When it does happen - i thank God. 🙂

I was told it is the Holy Spirit working within you… I wish it would come back and finish off some unfinished jobs in my case! 😃

Yes!
It happened to me early this morning at Mass during the Confetior when I suddenly thought of the privilege I have each and every morning to stand before God and begin my day by confessing that I am a sinner and asking Him for forgivness. I just choked up.
