Do you think priests should be allowed to marry?

Dear all,

The Roman Catholic Priests, today would like to follow the example of Jesus, eventhough celibacy is not required by Jesus at that time. Other Priests from other denominations may choose to follow the bible, and the RCC never condemn that. The RCC priests prefer to follow Jesus as in Mat 19:12.
Not entirely true, Remember, priests from the Byzantine Rite of the Church are not of another denomination, but Catholic, in obedience to the Pope, and are allowed to be ordained as married men. The REQUIREMENT of celibacy is quite unique to the Latin Rite.

Okay at least we learned one thing Roman Catholic Priests are not to marry. I cant lie i get confused on some of the things myself and ive been Catholic all my life. eastern, etc. i get really confused, so as far as our protestant brothers, i really understand how you get confused. So at least we know that RC cant. The reason again I was taught is If you are a Priest you must give totally to God. I am not putting down other religions, its just the vow that they take. They only serve God, and they are married to the Church we can say. The Church is who they please, and are there for our good, to help us to get to GOd. But you cannot say that other Priests that marry, and preachers are totally dedicated to God the way a RC Priest is. Because when you are married you are dedicated to you wife, children, etc. A priest gives all that up for one reason, God. So to the other Person who (let me have it) i am not trying to insult other workers of Christ, but you cant tell me they have the time, or have given more than a Priest. I cant believe that. A priest has given up everything. Yes other ministers of the Faith are good people and are doing great jobs, but they didnt take that oath to give up everything and follow Jesus. We obey our Pope and his reason is to become a Priest that is the vow you take, give up everything, now you must admit that is a very special person to do this, but it is also a calling from God himself. We all dont get this call. Only chosen People that God himself has called upon.

I’m a Catholic guy who has several close friends who are priests who have shared this information publically and don’t make any bones about it…who are you to question me on this? And yes, the point of the post was to reveal that priests generally don’t live “high on the hog” but struggle to make ends meet.
I understood the point of the post, I just don’t think that because you know some Priests that you can speak for all of them. I don’t think its right to make public knowledge of something that someone may have shared with you in private.

Rinne, I can’t tell if you understand…You are right, this is a confusing issue. 🙂 Just in case, I’ll post a clarifying post.

There are Catholic priests who are married and are active priests. There are married priests. However, it is not the current practice of the Latin half or Latin lung of the Catholic Church to commonly ordain a married man. That is not to say that they won’t, however. In recent years, they have ordained a very, very few such men. It is an exception to the practice. If the Church wished, she could ordain many such men. But, the Church does not so wish at this time.

For women, it is different. The Church has said that she is not *able *to ordain women. It is not a matter of what the Church wants. It is a matter of what is.

**The problem is that too many see the priesthood as a position of power rather than servitude to Christ’s body. ** There are other ways to serve the body of Christ OTHER THAN ordination, which is for whatever reason God decided, reserved to males. There have been many women hold very important and influential positions in the Church without being ordained. Mary, St. Teresa, Mother Teresa, and many more.
Were you speaking for your “friends” here too when you said the part above that I bolded? I thought that was rather insulting to say of any Priest of any Rite.

Tell me who sees the priesthood as a position of power??? No way…a position of service and dedication to God.

I don’t care if a large group of priests want to marry. They must follow Jesus Christ who was not married. That’s it. Over. Done.
Again, Jesus was/is God… Men are not… they are (so very) human… Jesus never said (that anyone is aware of) that marriage is inferior to not being married… St. Paul implied such a thing, but Jesus did not… He only said that we are to love Him more than our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, children and our very SELVES (so many of us forget that last one!! 😦 )…

And now that i think about it, it is easier to “hate” (yes, He uses that word) all those aforementioned “loved ones” if we are intimately involved with them… than when we are not… 😃

Jesus was sent on earth as a man, priests must follow his example.

No, the reason being that priests work 24/7 dedicated to God. There is no room for a wife and children, holy matromony is just the same. A person should be married 24/7
What are you talking about. There are thousands of US catholic priests NOW who want the rules of celibacy abolished. They are not worrying about 24/7…thats just your opinion thats not any factual information. The president of the United States is a lot busier then any priest. A good doctor married or single is still a good doctor and performs well. A priest has a good life. Never go on strike, no heavy lifting, don’t get your hands dirty. A good salary, full benefits, free money stipends for funerals/weddings. Sunday afternoons are usually spent at a well to do catholic home enjoying expensive beverages watching football. How do I know this. My mothers god son is a parish priest has been for 39 years. With friends when someone asks him what its like being a priest he laughs and tells them what I stated above. He says I am trying to drum up more business to get more men interested in the priesthood he says. (LOL) I also know 2 men that were priests and they say the same thing. There are committies in every parish that do most of the work. 163 catholic priests thats right 1 6 3 in the Milwaukee Diocese sent letters to the bishop asking to abolish celibacy…that is 163 catholic parishes in and around Milwaukee Wi. and all those priests want change. Another catholic group of priests, Voice Of The Ordained arch diocese of New York have priests listed all over the USA that want celibacy abolished. If so many of these good catholic priests want the option to marry its obvious they are not worrying about your 24/7. What this goes to show is that there is a LOT of discention and divide in the good ole catholc church.

Back in catholic history please check it out. Google married popes. 39 popes were married and fathered a lot of children. Priests/bishops were also allowed to marry prior to 1200 AD. Pope Adrian II was the last pope to be married had a wife Stephania and children. and his son became a pope" Don’t believe me google pope adrian II… Please check out Father John Shuster who runs CITI CELIBACY IS THE ISSUE. Father Shuster and many more like him around the USA are the driving force behind abolishing celibacy. Father Shuster is married.
You can bash me all you want because you don't want to believe what is written. I am just the bearer of factual information Everything above is truthful and explainable just take the time to check it out. PLEASE!

I must apologize for thinking the OP was impalass. My mistake.
39 previous popes were married, including priests of the time. Pope Adrian II was the last married pope…please check it out. I can’t change history.

Bash me all you want, I don’t make this stuff up. . The majority of catholics in all recent polls suggest celibacy should be abolished. 50% of roman catholic priests, thats right 1 out of every 2 parishes in the USA have priests that want change. Are they all wrong? Change is good! I know the catholic church hierarchy isn’t a democracy, but its time it should be.

“Father” John Shuster is a priest who no longer has faculties. He left the priesthood. He makes historical mis-statements in his case in the first paragraph. He is hardly a credible witness.

The Presidency is not a life vocation. At best, it lasts eight years. The rest of the time, he has a normal job and a normal life with his wife and family.
A good doctor married or single is still a good doctor and performs well.
Doctors have days off.
A priest has a good life. Never go on strike, no heavy lifting, don’t get your hands dirty. A good salary, full benefits, free money stipends for funerals/weddings. Sunday afternoons are usually spent at a well to do catholic home enjoying expensive beverages watching football.
Only if he’s in a dying parish that has no baptisms. Otherwise, he spends his Sunday afternoons doing baptisms.

It also doesn’t matter what petitions, or how many were sent to whom, because the Catholic Church is not a democracy. The rules don’t get changed by means of petitions. The Pope makes these decisions - or not. He is completely free to ignore public opinion - nothing bad will happen to him if he ignores public opinion. His job is to uphold the teachings of the Church; not to be popular.

No.

It’s a decision they know they are making, and make willingly. It is a matter of obedience to the teachings of Christ’s Church as well - Christ was not married, and said there would be those who would renounce sex for the sake of God’s kingdom.

Deacons can be married - and there are some priests who are converts who are married (as Peter was). And women won’t ever be ordained - once again, it’s a matter of obedience to the Church, not popular thought.

So what does the pope say about 39 popes and catholic priests that were married that came before him?

I believe several of the 12 apostles were married. Again I say when over 50% of United States Catholic priests polled recently by the New York Times/CBS that favour relaxing celibacy then 1 out of every 2 parishes in the united states (maybe your parish) I am sure your diocese has a priest(s) that disagrees strongly with your view on this matter. Maybe you should talk to your bishop to find out who they are.

So what does the pope say about 39 popes and catholic priests that were married that came before him?
He says that the current discipline of the Church is that priests and Bishops come from the ranks of unmarried, celibate men, and that they will have made a solemn vow to remain celibate for their whole lives.

How things were more than 1500 years ago is not really a concern of today. The discipline of celibacy is a witness and a sign to today’s world about the meaning of holiness, and what it is, to make a sacrifice for Jesus Christ.

No.

39 previous popes were married. Pope Adrian II was the last one. Catholic priests up until the 12 century could marry? Not much consistency there in the catholic church.

Again I say a recent poll taken in the united states says over 50% of roman catholic priests favour relaxing or abolishing celibacy. Don’t be mad at me, i just bring the information.
Let me ask you. Would you live a life of celibacy?

Rinne, I can’t tell if you understand…You are right, this is a confusing issue. 🙂 Just in case, I’ll post a clarifying post.

But Pong not in our church see what i mean in the Roman Catholic church no. they are not married, nor can be. ITs up to the Pope and he says no. see what i mean.

39 previous popes were married. Pope Adrian II was the last one. Catholic priests up until the 12 century could marry?
That’s a misleading statement. From the time of the Apostles, there were married men who could become priests, but no priest who entered the priesthood as a single male ever married afterwards.

Also, the discipline of celibacy has been around since at least the third century - somewhere in my library, I have a letter from a Bishop of that era complaining about a priest under his authority who got his wife pregnant after receiving Holy Orders, so it seems as though, although they could be married, and might have had children before receiving Holy Orders, they were not allowed to have sex after receiving Holy Orders.
Again I say a recent poll taken in the united states says over 50% of roman catholic priests favour relaxing or abolishing celibacy.
And again, the Catholic Church is not run on polls - it is not a democracy.

Don’t be mad at me, i just bring the information. 😃

ITs up to the Pope and he says no. see what i mean.
Yes, I see now. I agree, he says no at this time.

(And I apologize for misspelling your name in my previous post. I saw my error, but it was too late to edit the post.)
