Your country your interests my dear friend and for that you need some one else to shed their life. Why can’t it be from your family as well?

Serving is great but being killed in a war is even greater. Your family will be will to go at that level if a war breaks out?

This is what people do when their argument falls apart, change the discusion.

less than 1000 or2000? …Just check how many innocent people that America has killed in the middle east in recent years.

Yes death of innocent civilians other than American’s is irrelevant?

After further consideration, I do not believe this is a violation of just war doctrine, which applies specifically to armed conflict. I would rather think this would be a case where no objectively immoral deed, like murder and terrorism, can be done done to achieve a good end. The end cannot justify the means. There is no denying that what he did was commit murder on foreign soil. I also do not doubt for one minute that if the nation of Iraq had sent a drone into LAX to kill one of their enemies, Trump supporters would not be supportive of Iraq, but call it an act of terrorism. If the Golden Rule does not apply, then it is immoral.

There is no war. If we are to call it a rhetorical war, like the war on terrorism or the war on drugs, then most would agree that lynching drug dealers or suspected terrorist without any sort of legal process would be unthinkable, at least on American soil, and that is why I fear the growing sense of American exceptionalism, entitlement, and nationalism, the current president is stirring up.

Why is it better in a just war
It is not a war. Therefore, what happened is technically a murder. One cannot commit murder for any end, regardless of how good. The question is not what is better, but what is right.

If I understand the Just War Doctrine, it seems to apply to all out war, not these smaller events. The events of today seem to be self defense, in the way of keeping an adversary at bay from performing other acts of evil.

Despite the 24/7 instant news we get today, our world is more at peace than it has been in a long time.

At every scale, from major war to personal self-defense, the same principles apply: that every person is created and loved by God, that we should love our enemies, that a human life may not be taken in retribution or for the sake of material goods, power, or honor, and the conditions for taking life in order to protect life are narrowly delineated.

Having said that, I think the killing of Gen. Soleimani was justified under self-defense or just war because he was such a threat to many innocent people.

But isn’t self defense justified? If an adversary regularly attacks soldiers and civilians of another country, and can be reasonably expected to do so again, isn’t he a legitimate target?
It’s a very complex situation in the Middle East. Hard line stances often don’t end well.

It’s up to the Church to declare whether or not this current action of Justified or not

Or if it’s actually a War?

Does Francis lean toward Trump vs Iran?

For those who’ve been following MidEast News … .It’s not unexpected by any means…
There’s been a never-ending mess of lives from "both sides’ of nations…
The number of lives lost in the MidEast over the past 10 years is bad…

God knows…

As I read the just war doctrine, yes. However I didnt think GWB invasion of Iraq met all 4. I did agree with the invasion at the time.

Even if we apply just war theory to acts committed outside of war, there is still the question of reasonable chance for success. Historically, assassination of foreign leaders is more likely to start a war than stop one. I do not understand the bizarre logic of the president that this will stop a war. Does he think he can intimidate religious zealots?

Having been in the military and having worked in the intelligence community, there is always far more to the story than we hear in the news.

Please explain what you mean by Catholic teaching on “just war” doctrine not mattering.
It doesn’t have an influence on world leaders so that’s why it will not have practical effects.

It’s his modus operandi to make incredibly favorable and self-serving claims. His loyal supporters will immediately absorb it into their world view.
