Does your non-Catholic Christian church teach you about Catholicism?

That i
As far the catholic priest saying obsurd things that have NOTHING to do with our faith during the homily, is redicules. I have never heard a priest and catholics can attend any catholic church mass, so ive heard a few, talk about any other religion.
Catholic Priest HAVE and probably will again said absurd things against Protestants in homilies. I have attended Masses where this happened. Why it IS ridiculous that they do, it’s not unheard of. I have heard why all Protestants will go to hell, and much about the lack of training of Protestant ministers during Homilies. So yes, it has happened that they have talked about us there. But jsut as not all Portestant Ministers preach against Catholics not all Priests behave that way either.

Thank you, you made the same point as I was trying to make, but I was very clumbsy about it…thanks again.🙂

I dont know, i honestly find that hard to believe! I mean WOW, if I heard a priest saying stuff like that, i would say something. I will give you this, their are crooked priest out there no dought, but things said like that are NOT a part of our docttrine/beliefs. That is one mans opinion, and i bet you prolly saw mouths drop during that speach from the crowd?

I remember attending a study given by the pastor in which he talked about other religions, and how they were similar and not with Christianity, and as a throw-in with other Christian denominations and Churches (including Orthodox and Catholic) he talked about why there were differences between the churches and such. He gave it in a very unbiased way, explaining why we thought they were wrong, but not coming out and saying that Catholics were explicitly wrong, just misled.

I am good friends with that pastor, and I know he isn’t negative about the Catholic Church at all.

Although not necessarily in church but in books I remember reading a lot of negative things about the Catholic Church (Fox’ Book of Martyrs :bigyikes: That was a big turnoff for a long time…) but now I understand the difference and how to refute what was said in those books. (Well, Fox’ is just a bunch of stories, not a lot to refute there)

In discussing denominational religions, like Catholicism, we would discuss all of the various man made religions created by false doctrine and thus man. We would address an issue like “faith only” and break it apart refuting it’s heresy and show the scriptures proving it to be false. Another example, we take baptism, prove that it is necessary for salvation, thus proving it to be required. We’d take the Lord’s Supper and show how this was required at every worship. We’d address sing psalms and prayer in scripture being required. We’d show the 5 steps to salvation [hear, believe, repent, confess, baptize], We show scripturally where worship is required, not an option. We’d show the organization of the Church with Elders/Bishops and Deacons. We’d show where annointing of the sick is done by elders…but we didn’t annoint. We’d show how all the other false religions were not of God but of Satan’s big lies…“wide is the gate…straight is the path that leads to distruction”. We’d show where the bible authorizes one marriage between man and woman for life. And Catholic divorces are not authorized. Confession is public during the altar call. We waited on the table every Sunday as prescribed by the bible. We prayed the last prayer in memory of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection.

And then I asked the question of what the bible means by holding fast to the traditions… That popped up lots of unanswered questions, like how do we know the bible is inspired. Could some of those Catholic verses not be part of the bible? I was struggling really hard with this because how could the Catholic Church get some of this right and be so wrong? After all I left the Catholic Church for the “one true church founded by Christ on the day of Pentacost”…before the Catholic hijacked it and drove the real Christians underground. Dah. Then my television got stuck on EWTN because of a channel mix up in the company reprogramming channels. Then Catholic Radio popped up. The bible only church gave a refutation on the movie “The Da Vinci Code” and they brought up information about the Gnostic gospels and many other documents that I didn’t realize were still in existence. Most were just heresy in the early church. Out of curiosity I google “ancient christian documents”…found the didache, read it and felt sick… That led to a new search. I watch the Da Vinci Code, felt sick and then the already existing question of which books are inspired and how do we know.

Research popped up Catholic websites that explained it eloquently. I discovered how the bible was actuall put together. I then knew I found the true church, it’s Episcopalian…or Orthodox… Sound like Scott Hahn yet? Gets better. My family of five is a Catholic domestic church now.

But “one Baptist church” does not a case make either…in my opinion of course.🙂
I grew up Baptist and know very well that many Baptists DO preach anti-Catholicism. It’s their bread-and-butter it seems. Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C. is fervantly anti-Catholic and trains its students – from preschool to grad school – in such beliefs. Heck, most of the Baptist churches in the Upstate of South Carolina are anti-Catholic and generally hold interchurch anti-Catholic conferences every few years to teach their flocks about how to “deal” with Catholics.

Ditto. We never had conferences though - but quite frequently an anti-Catholic slur would come up in Sunday School or the sermon. One SS teacher said, “If a person believes everything the Catholic Church teaches, they cannot be saved.”

I think the “Bob Jones University” Baptists are against everyone not “Bob Jones University” Baptist…so I have no reason to doubt you. I’ve ran into them too…🙂

The General Baptists I know and the American Baptists I have known really have nothing to say on the matter…Catholics are “Catholics” and Baptists are “Baptists”.

Again, I have no doubt many Baptists do…but members of just about every faith tradition has something to say about others faith traditions…some Catholics do it…some Baptists do it…and to our shame some Quakers do it…but it should not be an indictment on those who do not…it is not an “official stance” of most faith traditions I have had the privelege of knowing.

Sadly, I didn’t see jaws dropping open, but I suspect they were used to it from that priest. Or some may not have known better. Just the point is, that people SHOULDN’T teach like that in Homilies or sermons, but people from all sides do it. 😦

PS sorry to everyone for my previous posts grammar and spelling… I know what I said and its hard to make out (too late to edit it now too). :o

What were some of the things that Bob Jones taught in how to “deal” with Catholics?

JustAsking,

Bob Jones, and the churches affiliated with it, is adament that Catholics are not Christians and go out of their way to “enlighten” their flocks. I have a ton of links that I can post, but I’ll have to get them off the desktop later today.

For now, this is a pamphlet that was given out during the 2002 anti-Catholic seminar held at Hampton Park Baptist. (The pastors at each of the “participating churches” have a link to BJU in one form or another and each of their churches are listed on the BJU site.) The images below are clickable thumbnails and the only one missing is one with a map of the Hampton Park Church Campus:

…I can remember Catholicism being mentioned once in church–one of the other kids in my Sunday School class asked if Catholics were Christians. The teacher responded by essentially saying that some are, some aren’t… .
Hello khutcheson,

It isn’t the answer that I would have given, because I know that all those who are properly baptized, are by definition Christian, even Protestants. 😃 . If one is Catholic, then he/she has been properly baptized and is by definition… a Christian. All Catholics are Christians.

I hope this helps,

Peace 🙂

Well I don’t agree with you : I couldn’t say that ALL Catholics are Christians, neither could I say that ALL Protestants are Christians : for me baptism doesn’t make you a Christian, what makes you a Christian is realizing that you are a sinner and ask God to forgive your sins ( repentance ) and putting your faith in Him for your salvation thanks to Christ’s atoning death ; THEN you are baptized …

I agree with you. It is much more accurate to say that all Christians are Catholic. They may be separated brethren, but since there is only ONE CHURCH and only ONE BODY, it is clear that all validly baptized persons are members of it.

I also agree that there are many (I would say most) persons who call themselves “catholic” who are Catholic in name only, and do not behave according to the Teachings. I think all “cafeteria catholics” are actually Protestants, but don’t realize it. I say that because that is what I was for many years.

Catholics believe that baptism is the rite of initiation into the New Covenant, and replaces circumcision, so we also baptize thise who may not be able to make a profession of faith. We do not see that baptism is withheld from these persons.

Why don’t “Cafeteria Catholics” leave the church? In another post, I was told that women that use the birth control pill should not receive the Eucharist at Mass. Why be part of such a church that would deny Communion to them when actually it is God’s invitation to partake in Communion?

From the Episcopal Visitor Center…

"All Are Welcome

All baptized Christians—no matter age or denomination—are welcome to “receive communion.” Episcopalians invite all baptized people to receive, not because we take the Eucharist lightly, but because we take our baptism so seriously. "

God Bless!

The reason is because contraception is a mortal sin. The Church must concern herself with care of souls, and living in sin is bad enough, without adding more sin to it.

Catholic communion indicates a union with the Teachings of Jesus. Those who are not in union or separated by sin will eat and drink condemnation upon themselves.

27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are chastened so that we may not be condemned along with the world.’ 1 Cor 11:27-32

The church does not want anyone to be condemned along with the world.

To approach the Lord’s table in a state of sin is an insult to Christ, and the blood that He shed for us on the cross.

Are infants who are baptized considered christian since they have never repented or believed in Christ?

Were the infants circumcised under the Old Covenant considered children of Israel even though they had never heard of Moses and kept the commandments?

Actually, we are born again at baptism (and Scripture supports this much more so than “asking Jesus into your heart makes you born again”) and the parents promise at their child’s baptism to raise them in the Christian faith. I doubt my own kids could tell you a time that they didn’t know Jesus, though we didn’t practice infant baptism when they were infants. They were told/sung to about Jesus and what He did for us from before they could have an intelligent conversation. Regardless, He’s always known them, and that’s what *really *matters. 👍
