Why do you keep asserting that I am retracting my statement that the Bible clearly states what the Bible states?
It does not simply state that the the slaughter happened; it clearly states that God commanded that it should be done: "This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”
There are passages in the Old Testament that describe horrible things that different people did that are descriptive, but not commanded by God. This is not one of those passages.
There are also passages that are lyrical or hyperbolic, but are relating an essential truth. This could be one of those passages, but I am not going to try to judge or claim to definitively know the will of God. Our God is a God of Love, but also of Justice. And at times, as recorded in the Bible, He judged entire nations.
