Dressing for Mass?

The challenge at my parish is with the way some of the **Extraordinary Ministers of Comunion **wear. It is the biggest challenge not to notice. I am trying very hard not to be judgmental, but shorts/jeans, low cut tops/tank tops and sneakers??? arrrghhhh I guess that’s a whole other post…LOL…
Are they the ones who are just ordinary people who helped the priest hold the bread and wine for those in the congregation to partake of the Eucharist??

I feel the same way. I feel like I should dress for the King of Kings!! And also, what if by some chance He happens to really pay us a visit to our parish in person! I will want to be ready and dressed respectfully if that happens.

LilyM>By the way, Queen Elizabeth from what I heard from what Princess Kate said, that Prince William and everyone else had to dress very very decently around the breakfast table when the Queen was present. She is very stoic about that. Kate had to teach her husband that it was ok to stay in your jammies to have breakfast. lol. 🤷
That sounds like the same Queen Elizabeth who refused to give Prince Charles a hug as a young boy when she first saw him after six months of world touring just because there were photographers present. Far from an unfailingly brilliant role model as a mother then.

Yes. Usually the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) are expected to dress modestly and many parishes have dress code for them. It’s unusual for them to be immodestly dressed, at least in my experience. 🙂

I totally agree. I have also approached the coordinator of the EMHCs and the pastor. However, it continues and it’s very disappointing. I wish they would FOLLOW the dress code. Perhaps, I’ll approach our pastor again… hmmmmm

This situation gets worse in the summer and it’s Florida

I suppose some pastors are just glad to have people willing to be EMHC and so don’t make a fuss over clothes. 🤷

It’s all about the Real Presence. Once you become aware that Jesus is really at mass, your way of dressing totally changes.
I am a cradle catholic, but I was not always aware. Now that I understand the Greatest Miracle at Mass, I dress appropriately to see the King of Kings!!
I am fully aware of the Real Presence – It is what drew me into the Church 24 years ago – and it DID change my way of dressing. I went from wearing dresses that were low-cut and barely covered by bum to wearing jeans and a nice top. “Good clothes” means I break out my black capris and a really nice top.
I wonder if we should rejoice and give thanks that our brothers and sisters are present at Mass with us to celebrate The Blessed Eucharist
in days when numbers dwindle, rather than be critical of their apparel and even their attitudes which latter is only speculation. There may be many reasons indeed why people come to Mass dressed as they are.
:amen:

Nowadays, my Mass attire consists of scrubs. I wear them for school during the week, so I wear them when I go straight to daily Mass from class. I wear them every Sunday because I go to Mass straight from work. I used to feel self-conscious about wearing scrubs to Mass, but I’m over that now because of the support of my fellow parishioners who are happy that I make the effort to come to Mass after a long, hard Saturday night shift in the ER. I have donated all of my “good clothes” to charity (except my one black dress and a couple of shrugs) because I do not have a chance to wear them anymore. Maybe in a couple of years. Then again, people at Mass night not recognize me in “real clothes”… 🤷

Good comments:thumbsup:
Congratulations on responding to Grace and The Gospel and not pouring" new wine into old wineskins" and changing your method of dressing to conform to your interior spirituality and conversion! 👍

Your second and final comments I am sure reflect many where the important point is getting to Mass, not what one is wearing on ‘one’s back’. And, I also noted in your comments, a beautiful spirit of poverty and simplicity.
I feel very confident that you will indeed be recognized at Mass - and no matter what you wear ! …👍.👍👍

…The person who is having most influence on me at the moment is our receptionist where I work voluntary - she is outstanding in every way in Charity, kindness to all and thoughtfulness, excusing of any faults in others - and I pray for the Grace to imitate something of her beautiful interior life - revealed in her exterior self/personality. She dresses quite ordinary - neither up-dressed nor down-dressed, neither outstandingly modest nor immodest. ORDINARY. It is her person that literally shines with great beauty and in a most unconscious manner on her part. A truly beautiful person and not Catholic either. The Holy Spirit often reveals Himself as not at all ‘the snob’, confining His Activity and Grace to a select few - oh pas du tout!!! … not at all!!!

That is sad! Perhaps the late Lady Diana knew that and promptly went out to hug her boys in front of photographers when she came back from a outing.

Everyone>I have been reading my daily scriptures every morning and this morning was no exception. Perhaps it is divine inspiration but I was on I Chronicles 16:29: “Give to the LORD the glory due his name! Bring gifts, and enter his presence; worship the LORD in holy attire.” Now what does that tell you? It was meant for us to worship the LORD in respectable attire.

Becca you started the thread indicating that slacks were inappropriate. Remember???
it was such a shock to me to see people come in with slacks and some were wearing shorts.
So maybe it isn’t that we disagree that people should worship in respectable attire. Maybe it is just that we differ on WHAT is respectable. 🤷

The Queen is a stickler for protocol because she was brought up that way, but in private she played with her children, rolling around on the grass and giggling with them just like any other mother. She’s been through far more in her life than I’d care to be. I have to give her props for standing up under all the difficulties she’d had to face in her life.

I saw some home movies of Elizabeth in which she wore good, sensible clothes even when playing with her kids. We don’t really know what good clothes are any more, made of sturdy material that you could pass down to at least a couple more generations. I envied her clothes, and all the women of that era, for the classy styles and good material.

I have never seen her played with her children but then that was before my time. 🤷 I do believe they still make clothes like that over there in the UK. And very expensive too! There was a recent pic of Princess Kate wearing a new maternity summer dress that is $1000!

You are right. You are making a great effort and we all know Our Lord sees this 🙂 Congratulations!!! It sounds like you all covered up anyway 👍

I wear slacks in the winter (I hate panty hose and I freeze in the winter!). In the summer, I sometimes wear nice capris or for a special Mass, I wear a skirt, but I don’t own very many skirts I think the last time I wore shorts to Mass was in 1991. I have worn jeans, but not to Sunday Mass (well, a few years ago in Denver).

When I see grown MEN (i am talking 40s and 50s) wear shorts…I wonder why they can’t sacrifice ONE hour of discomfort for Jesus who had 3 hours of pain on the Cross!

I’m a bit of an Anglophile so I watch all the programs about the royal family I can and read about them when stories worth reading come out. Elizabeth is actually a warm, caring person who holds herself aloof in public, as she was taught to do. I understand her a bit better, perhaps because I’m the same age as Charles, and so grew up with her as Queen. I have a great deal of respect for her.

Whenever a royal has any special clothing made it costs money. But look at it this way, those who make those clothes earn their living by it. The materials are expensive and the making of the clothes often time consuming because they are one of a kind pieces. I rather think Kate would be just as happy with something off the rack, but it’s expected that she will use certain clothiers, and she can’t just walk into a shop to buy clothes. Those who make luxury items are earning an honest living and feeding their families. I cannot find fault with it unless it is ostentatious, which it really isn’t. Her clothes will become historical pieces one day, like those of Victoria, Elizabeth or Diana are now.

Yes, I am also a Anglophile too. I try to keep up with their lives. I heard that Kate and William are savvy with their money and try to find less costlier ways to buy things. That is smart. Well, with maternity wear, she has had to use clothing designers to make her clothes. Tell me about it, one time there was a certain dress that Kate wore, and then boom, the website that she bought it from, had crashed cuz so many women were buying that dress!! Also, it sold out!! lol.

That is funny. I wouldn’t/couldn’t buy a dress just because Kate wore it. In my case I don’t have her figure nor her height. I have to try on everything I buy and have to be frugal, as well. I don’t envy her in her position–not one little bit. 😉

Lol. Well, they do have different sizes. Well, I do wish there was a reality show called, “A Princess for one week”. 😉 It would be fun. 😃

Dressing up for Mass is more a matter of vanity than anything else. People dress up to be seen as dressed up by other people.
I beg your pardon, this is not necessarily true. I dress up for Sunday Mass because I will be seeing the King of the Universe.
